People are voting and commenting on her. You can too :) http://redfizz.com Why "Proof"? Because I had already tried 4 other songs and while I got her some new fans, I thought I'd shake things up. After a song is first submitted it's evaluated by some regulars. They have 3 categories they can place the song in. Rejects - Can still be listened to and Commented on, but they aren't considered Red Fizz-worthy. Happy hasn't had a Reject yet. Second Stage - Not chosen for the front page, but still worthy. "Winter," "Collective Heart," "Glory," and "Words Weren't Made For Cowards" all made the Second Stage. "Winter," which is always my first song of choice, caused a stir, in a very nice way. It got her at least one new high-octane fan. Front page - the ultimate, where everyone wants to be. After a song makes Second Stage or Front page, others can come in and assign stars and Comment. "Glory" made the Second Stage and some Comments but no stars. "Words" elicited some nasty comments that made me not want to submit any more songs but then I said what the hell, I'll throw them "Proof" and see what they do with it. Lo and behold, surprise, surprise, it gets elevated to the front page! I'm always surprised when people like that song, but the folks at Mixposure and mp3unsigned loved it, so I thought I'd try it. I was the one who asked if I could take a flash picture, and who told her my grandfather lived to be 106 and swore by honey and garlic (he did!). The show was pretty cool. She was funny, her voice was in wonderful shape, she caused a burst of applause when she took off her hat and revealed a buzz cut, and she performed "In The Blue Light" and "You Don't Need" *sigh*. Many of the other songs were from albums I don't know well. Others that I did know included "AnyTime," "Barcus Is Willing" and "What Do You Do With A Druken Sailor." :) Also "Walk On Water" was her last song. It was just her, either standing up at the microphone and playing her little power guitar, or sitting at the keyboards. There were lots of sound effects like birds twittering and geese and things. She had electronic backing tracks too. She said she liked Chicago and hoped to spend some time here writing. She likes the pavement. She said that she'd be going to Australia and New Zealand early next year, I think, and that afterwords she would do a longer tour. Anything you want to add Tim? I wasn't as dazzled as I have been in the past by the music, but my bedazzlement at the fact that I was seeing JANE SIBERRY (aka Issa) at *SCHUBAS* more than made up for it. Schubas, the teeny venue where I've seen Tori, Victoria Williams, Holly Cole, Noe Venable, Lisa Germano, Dave Stewart and Barbara Gaskin, Charlotte Martin, Iris DeMent, Kristen Hersh, Over The Rhine, Feist, KT Tunstall, Imogen Heap and so many more I'm blanking out on. Chris even saw Sarah McLachlan there on her first tour. We lived in Kansas City at the time and he was up here on business. He missed Jane because he was in Kansas City on business, though I don't know if he would have gone anyway, because he's really pissed off at her for ditching her master tapes, he's always wanted a 5.1 remix of The Walking and When I Was A Boy, and video. Btw, thanks Dan for the article! It helped me come to terms with what she's trying to do. In all, great show! They're worthless, but I have some photos here: http://rhodeshows.com/otherlive/Issa/Issa_10-06-06 There are only a couple of decent ones. Most suck because I didn't use flash. Then I asked her before the encore if I could use flash and she said yes, but those didn't come out well either. Still, you can see what the setup was. Not to mention indie labels, many of which are owed many thousands of dollars, and small distributors, like the one a friend of mine works for. This will definitely have serious ramifications throughout the music world. I remember when the Tower in D.C. was THE place to buy music... What are they going to do? Its seems to me that many of them are underpaid and live on the edge. Some of them do not make the best clerks but at least it was a job. I think Tower expanded to much. Too many things not related to music. Perhaps too many stores. It seems their buying habits were wierd. They would have stuff there that were in big qualtities that did not sell. Its a sad situation. I too used to buy often at the Chicago store on Clark St and the New York store in the Village. The New York store was great and I loved shopping there. All things must pass. In the late 70s(?) and most of the 80s, on my frequent trips to New York City, a stop at Tower Records was always near the top of my "must do" list. There wasn't much ever I was seeking in the LP category that they didn't have...including them stocking Japanese pressings I was actually looking for. Two Japanese pressings that come to mind I found there that I actually walked into the store hoping to find were John Miles "The Rebel" and a Harry Belafonte/Nana Mouskouri gem of an LP I was craving since my original warped-out on me. That's a sign of a gem of a store! I haven't been there since then, but am saddened none-the-less by this news. Another gem I used to love was the House Of Guitars in Rochester. As recently as 1998-ish they were still well stocked in rare music in CD and (still) in LP format, plus all else they offered. The ones that don't have a sign posted and a notice in their contracts stating that covers registered with "x" may not be performed within the venue. this wasn't RIAA (the record companies) this was the publishers. - -troy On Oct 9, 2006, at 8:31 PM, Ken Blake wrote: > Here's a story of a restaurant owner getting sued because a band did > some covers there. > > http://www.blogs.oregonlive.com/oregonian/newsupdates/default.asp? > item=214112 > > I just don't get this.
