Today's Subjects: ----------------- Peter Hammill reissues/Carina Round [adamk@zoom.co.uk] Saturday 9/22 [kerrywhite@webtv.net (kerry white)] ---------------------------------------------------------------------- ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Date: Thu, 28 Sep 2006 11:27:01 +0100 From: adamk@zoom.co.uk Subject: Peter Hammill reissues/Carina Round Well, amid all the bad news at this end -- house-hunting gone awry, internet connection down for the last five days (thank god for spare time at work) and this morning numerous cars on our road, including our own, had their tyres slashed -- but there's a bright ray of sunshine. Peter Hammill. Unfortunately, house-hunting and general future uncertainty have led me to give his October South Bank gig a miss, but his early solo albums are now being (finally) given the re-release they deserve. Last year his solo debut, reissued, was everything a re-issue should be, with notes and extra tracks. Now comes "Chameleon in the Shadow of the Night" (dark, moody and IMHO somewhat indulgent), the excellent "Silent Corner and the Empty Stage" as well as "In Camera", in which he dabbled in tape loops and the most hellish sounds. This batch ends with the seminal "Nadir's Big Chance", a punkish riposte to Bowie's Ziggy Stardust which has been cited by Johnny Lydon as a big influence on him. Not to everyone's taste, sure, but he's one of the great underrated figures in contemporary music, and he's certainly ecto as I see it. As almost all of his early solo material in my collection is mainly second-hand (and therefore missing liner notes and lyrics) or budget (Virgin, who acquired his back catalogue, did a bog-standard vinyl and CD release) these are just jewels. Having heard little this year to thrill me, this makes me feel a lot better. I should, however, put in a vote for Carina Round's "Slow Motion Addict". The release date for this has been put off and put off in the UK until I finally broke down and found a promo copy on Amazon US marketplace. And it was worth the wait. Starts out utterly brilliantly, gets a bit samey in a PJ Harvey way in the middle, then pulls out hidden depths towards the end, leaving me haunted. Sure, sounding like PJ Harvey is no bad thing, but I still miss the complexities and eclectic influences of her debut. That said, this is a great CD and one of the rare new releases I find myself listening to over and over again. I'd love to hear her duet with Peter Hammill.... Off to see Thea Gilmore tonight, but have to admit I'm in the wrong mood for a live gig. Well, maybe this will help. adam k. - ----------------------------------------------- This mail sent through http://webmail.zoom.co.uk ------------------------------ Date: Thu, 28 Sep 2006 16:41:18 -0500 From: kerrywhite@webtv.net (kerry white) Subject: Saturday 9/22 Hi, On Saturday 9/22 I traveled to a small airport outside of Kansas City and after a short briefing I climbed into a single propeller Marchetti fighter trainer, with an F-9 Phantom stick instead of a yoke. The cockpit was about 36" wide - only inches between me and the pilot. Once in the air I was given control. About 45% of the time in the air I was in control. The occasion was called Air Combat USA: a laser-tag dog- fight. I do not have a pilots licence, this was the first time I ever flew anything. I am a slightly built couch potato. An hour at speeds up to 200 mph, between 3500 to 9500 feet up, pulling between 4 and 5 gees as we went up and turned down to laser the other guy. Did I get sick..yes. Was it worth it anyway...yes. Did they get any of my being sick on the video tape they made...no. They had one camera per plane with 4 fiber optic lens feeds that the pilot controlled. Oh yeah, it was a tie, we blew each other up twice. I don't have the schedule to be available to do regular stuff very often, so, I sometimes go for something big. I travelled from Kansas to the right coast to see Happy sing 4 times. Last year I went on the "vomit comet" and spent 5 minutes of my life weightless, at 25 seconds at a time. Not sure what else I can try without killing myself. 8-) At least now I can say: There is nothing like flying straight up going into a left bank with 5 gees pushing back your neck and pushing your guts to your shoes to make you realise that you are getting a bit old for some things!! bye, me KrW I'm Peter Pan! I'm perpetually young!! OW!! What's wrong with my back? ------------------------------ End of ecto-digest V12 #258 ***************************
