They are a female folk duo. Kiya is an extremely talented acoustic guitar player. They are definitely way folkier than Ecto, but if some of you have those leanings, there are plenty of concerts happening for us "between the coasts" people. They are genuinely nice ladies. Have a good weekend...Lisa Wishing Chair www.wishingchair.com News, Info, Updates and Tour Info Hello Chair Friends. Last week we performed a series of concerts in Virginia, with MA songwriter Greg Greenway, to help raise money for the Commonwealth Coalition and Vote No Virginia. (www.voteno.org) We raised nearly $6400 to support the work of the Coalition to help stop hate from getting written into the VA constitution. What a pleasure it was for us to be involved in such wonderful events. Hopefully through our efforts, more people will be more inspired to share the "vote no" message with family, friends, and co-workers. Our friend Martha Shore said it well as she encouraged the Norfolk audience to reach out and TALK to people outside of their circle of friends... "Virginia is a state of conservatives... but Virginia is not a state of haters." The force behind the concerts, Sherri Powers, is ready and willing to help get other events going all over the country. If you are interested in speaking with her about it, write her at sherri.powers@cox.net. I didn't mean to be so selfish! *grin*): - -=-=-=-=-=- I have to admit, I wasn't as enthusiastic about seeing Charlotte this time around--I didn't think she'd have time to move away from the infatuation with gadgetry that permiated her solo show this past spring. That isn't to say that I didn't enjoy the last show--quite the opposite. But I also knew she was capable of a more cohesive sound and structured songwriting that didn't depend on a confusing cocophony of self-serving blips and bleeps. So it was indeed a treat to find a clear sonic path laid out before my ears at the Varsity Theater last night. Not only did Char present a tighter, more integrated sound, but the material felt fleshed-out and well-rehearsed (in fact, she mentioned a four-month summer rehearsal schedule). Some additional power came courtesy a live drummer, whose name escapes me. It was evident that he and Charlotte weren't strangers, as his sense of timing and dynamics were a perfect fit to her impulses. Another interesting change was Char's arrangement of keyboards/samplers and mic. Instead of being seated at a keyboard with other doo-dads to either side, she stood the entire time, with the mic mounted to what appeared to be a flexible desklamp stand. This worked to great effect, allowing her to move around (sometimes quite aggressively, which was downright sexy) and make adjustments to equipment while singing without having to stray from the pick-up zone--she just pulled the mic along wherever she went. The material she performed was almost entirely from Stromata, the new album released last Tuesday. With the exception of the title track, the rest was new to me. Considering the level to which I follow the females in my Pantheon, it was a somewhat unique experience to attend a concert by one of them and not know the material intimately. And from what I did hear, there are some new gems to be mined on the album. I don't remember the names of the songs, so I can't really make track-by-track comments; however, suffice to say the "beautiful and fierce" adjective combo still applies: moments of intense beats met with sublime piano flourishes, then mixed with confident vocals to create more of the aural goodness that is Charlotte Martin. I should also add that I thoroughly enjoyed the opening act, Joe Purdy. My tolerance of male vocalists with acoustic guitars is far greater than that of a "white boys with guitars" band, but he blew me out of the water. The lyrics were thoughtful without leaving a trite aftertaste, and the 1947 Gibson guitar he borrowed for the night only helped sweeten the intimacy he proferred. If his studio recordings match the finery I heard last night, then he can count on a few more sales. ------------------------------ Date: Sat, 16 Sep 2006 15:10:57 -0500 From: Timothy Jones-Yelvington Subject: Re: Charlotte Martin: Take 2 (Minneapolis, MN - Sept. 14) From everything I'm hearing, this might be the album that converts me into Charlotte fandom. It sounds really fantastic and risky. Previously, I had no interest in listening to a Tori-lite. I'd honestly rather listen to a totally contrived mainstream popstar than a bland, mass-marketed singer-songwriter.... Ie, I'd rather spin Gwen Stefani or Justin Timberlake than schlock like Norah Jones or John Mayer. But this album sounds like it's a lot more distinctive. I also didn't realize until yesterday that she'd chosen to leave behind her major, which bodes well for the future. Because my full name is attached to my email address, I've noticed that almost all of my ecto emails come up when I google myself. It doesn't concern me that much -- I'd stand by most of want I said here. But at the same time, I'm not sure I want/need every prospective employer knowing that I came home wasted one night and ordered extra copies of a Hannah Fury disc. ------------------------------ Date: Sun, 17 Sep 2006 00:53:18 -0400 From: cjmacs Subject: new mary fahl hi everyone! so has anyone else heard the new mary fahl cd yet, "from the dark side of the moon"? as the name implies it's a re-creation/update of the pink floyd album... chuck ***** ------------------------------ End of ecto-digest V12 #247 ***************************
