I was wondering if we'd hear from her again. Hooray! - ---------- Forwarded message ---------- Date: Thu, 14 Sep 2006 11:50:49 -0400 From: Rachel Smith To: undisclosed-recipients: ; Subject: Rachel Smith Music news Hello All, I am being initiated into two essential technologies: myspace and gmail. I've been slow, I know, but I am now a convert to both of these most helpful mediums. (If you have been writing to my hotmail account, switch to this gmail address). I'm writing to tell you about my new myspace page. Right now I have posted a little song that Dawn Landes and I sang in France last summer in our "caravan," the words by Paul de Sorbier and music by Dawn. I don't know how long it will be up, so go take a listen. Paul's words describe the magical forest we lived in as it was transformed by the sculptors and light artists who used only natural materials to build their creations. I've also posted a song from the soon-to-be-released album "famous secrets." The art is done and all that remains is to receive it from the factory. I'll continue to post songs on myspace from this album as well as other unreleased treats, including a video from "the clearing," so keep checking in, and send me a note if you're so inclined. My main website is still horribly out of date, but I am working on a redesign to be launched very soon. That's all for now! Have a beautiful day. I wrote her a few years back, and she said that she had her second album recorded ages ago but she hadn't released it. She was going to offer me a copy but I think I got lost in the shuffle. It'll be great to hear some new stuff from her. Jon On 9/14/06, Neile Graham wrote: > Wow! I was wondering if we'd hear from her again. I've been totally grooving on the self-titled debut (from 2003) by LA's Dengue Fever. A few weeks ago I was similarly infatuated with the more recent "Escape from Dragon House". The Dengue Fever story is strange and fascinating. It's better documented in the All Music Guide then on their own site: http://denguefevermusic.com, though you can get video and audio samples there. It's a band of alt-rock guys, whose core discovered and fell in love iwih Cambodian rock and roll (with a heavy influence on surf and pyschedelic music). They formed a cover band to play the songs they brought back from Cambodia on cassette. Eventually, they found an accomplished Cambodian singer to front the band, and then things really took off. That's about where the debut comes in. It's totally engaging, captivating, off-kilter and strange. They progress from a cover band to writing their own songs - in English - that are translated into Khmer and then modified by the singer !?! Throw in some post-9/11 immigration issues and the story just continues to spin in strange directions. Outside of all that, it's just interesting music. There's been a good buzz on the group. They apparently made a big splash at SXSW this year, just finished playing Bumbershoots, and are off to the Chicago World Music Festival. (Wish we'd been more proactive and grabbed them for !Globalquerque!, but when we were booking it, all I had were rough on-line live footage, which wasn't working for me.) Curious what folks will think of it. neal np: Demo - Jay Mankita ------------------------------ Date: Thu, 14 Sep 2006 18:30:37 -0700 From: Neile Graham Subject: Re: Psapp Thanks to Craig for the heads up about Psapp. I don't think they've been mentioned here before. I bought both their available albums. - --Neile At 6:11 AM -0700 9/7/06, Craig Gidney wrote: >Has anyone written about them here? They are a duo that fills the >space left by Lamb.
