Recent upstart SellaBand is now allowing fans to do just that, part of a novel artist financing model. The concept encourages music fans to invest $10 shares in their favorite group, and then aggregates those contributions. Once a group reaches the $50,000 mark, the real action begins, and the band is sent to the studio to begin serious recording. SellaBand noted that it is "not a record company," but rather "a facilitator, bringing artists and fans together, and presenting a new economic model." Each investor is known as a "Believer," and any unsigned band can upload their music onto the site. Fans can shift their investments from band to band, though once the $50,000 level is reached, the dollar figures are locked. Each investor - a total of up to 5,000 - will receive a limited edition CD that the fund helped to create. "Music for the people, chosen by the people, supported by the people, not some marketing plan to sell us music that we do not want," proclaimed record producer Chris Kimsey and an "Expert" on the site. "SellaBand puts value back into the sound of music." The concept is currently live at sellaband.com. ------------------------------ Date: Thu, 24 Aug 2006 09:20:52 -0500 From: Doug Subject: Re: Sellaband Sounds quite interesting... - --Doug ------------------------------ Date: Thu, 24 Aug 2006 10:18:17 -0700 From: "Sue Trowbridge" Subject: Re: Sellaband On 8/24/06, Cerquone, Suzanne wrote: > Thoughts? 1. I wonder why they settled on that amount instead of, say, $20K. - --Sue T. > SellaBand Delivers Novel Share-Buying Concept > > Like a band enough to invest in it? I'm guessing that these people might end up holding a heck of a lot of sub-$50,000 bundles of money. Just the interest on what they'll hold would pay for the miniscule amount of it that would ever get to a musician. ------------------------------ Date: Fri, 25 Aug 2006 08:18:33 +1000 From: andrew fries Subject: Re: Sellaband I'm not so sure about this particular implementation, but I believe they have the right idea: Make record companies redundant, have artists finance their recordings directly through some sort of arrangement with their fans. As for this particular version though, I think $50,000 is way too much. Also, I just don't like the thought of having another middleman, ie sellaband, in place of record company. Still, hopefully they'd have a lot less power over the artists than record companies - at least they don't hold any rights to the finished product. ------------------------------ Date: Fri, 25 Aug 2006 13:59:43 +1000 From: "Cyoakha Grace" Subject: Land of the Blind August Newsletter Dear friends and fans and burning souls, Just a short note to say Hello & I hope your summer is going beautifully well & extremely magical.
