Personally, I thought that Zayra Alvaraz did a KILLER performance of her original song, in Spanish. What emotion! Now that she has been voted off the show, I'll be watching to see if she can launch her solo career. But then it's not hard to put Phil Collins to shame. The acoustic show last week was especially enjoyable I have been watching this since the second week because of local gal Storm Large, who has been knocking them dead almost every week. It's not the kind of music I normally listen to, but used to, and appreciate what many of the artists are doing, especially Storm. She blew it last Tuesday with "I Will Survive," but that song has been parodied so often, and is so appallingly bombastic in general, it could hurt anyone who does it, no matter how well. She did such a superb version of "We Are The Champions" the week before. The judges appreciated it too. I don't think Storm should win; she doesn't need them. She gains tremendous publicity from this that will help her career immensely. She should come in second. If she did front the band they should change their name to "Storm And The Old Burnouts" because that's what a supernova is: a star burning out. If that band has any chance it's with Dilana as the front. She has the chemistry and could lead them to at least a few good tours and possibly be a solo star later. Zayra Alvarez was good too. She just didn't belong on this show. I expect to hear from her in the future. She is already a star in Spanish music. I forget who did "Creep" but it was a powerfully emotional version. That name sounds familiar, as it turns out because of this (sorry for the long URL but I can't find a shorter version): "Storm Large's 7 Deadly Sins" http://homepage.mac.com/merussell/iblog/B835531044/C1162162177/E52805924/index.html Which is my friend Mike Russell's CulturePulp comic strip about her that appeared in the Portland Oregonian in late 2004. You could probably also find find that via culturepulp.com but probably not very easily. By the way, the end notes for the strip also include links to MP3s some of her stuff which I am now going to have to check out. (In fact, she gets another mention in the succeeding year-end "deleted scenes" comic: "11. Quietly grieving as profane cabaret vamp Storm Large sends my inner censor into overdrive" (thought balloons: "Can't draw her doing that", "Can't write her saying that"). ------------------------------ Date: Thu, 17 Aug 2006 18:09:09 -0500 From: Cheri Villines Subject: Re: Rockstar Supernova > I forget who did "Creep" but it was a powerfully emotional version. > > Michael > I think that was Lucas something or other and I really enjoyed his rendition. Actually, I am enjoying the show more that I thought I would.
