Since I'm new to Ecto, I don't know if this is old news to everybody, but are you folks familiar with Rasputina? After reading comments about Gogol Bordello, I would like to recommend this band. Rock music with female vocals, played by two (female) cellists and a (male) drummer. They go from slow and dreamy to loud hard rock. They've got a lot of albums out so I'm sure somebody out there's heard of them. If so, are they considered Ecto material? Or not? Live, Rasputina wear Victorian costumes and vocalist & first cello Melora tells jokes between songs. The songs themselves are funny and weird, a lot like Happy's. I think the songs would sound great played on 'regular' instuments, but the fact that they are played on amplified cellos gives them a unique sound. Check them out! I'd also like to add that "March of the Penguins" is a fantastic movie and you should not believe anyone who says otherwise. Or even better, see it and decide for yourself. Yeah, we first started discussing them when their first album came out about 10 years ago. Having said that, your recommendation is still appreciated; you never know when you'll mention something that either a) we've not actually gotten around to talking about or b) reminds somebody that they haven't listened to 'em in a while and gee, now would be a pretty good time! If you want to see the sorts of things we might have discussed about a particular artist, you might want to have a look at one of the best offshoots of ecto over the years -- the Ectophiles' Guide to Good Music. While it's far from comprehensive, there's still a frightening amount of amazingly useful information, much of it culled from comments made on ecto. Some noteworthy things: * Opening for Ane Brun was Andy Laird. I don't have much to say about him, but toward the end of his set he brought on a cellist--when I heard him I thought, "This guy is the Lyris Hung of the cello." (That's Mila Drumke's violin player, for those who may have forgotten...) His name is Dana Leong; website http://www.danaleong.com/ Lots of interesting effects--thumping, scratching, squeaking, etc. * I was struck by how much Ane Brun's voice sounds like Dorothy Scott's--Ane just needs a bit more warble in the upper registers to clinch it. * I was also surprised to hear that "Humming One of Your Songs" is from Ane's first album; it was her first single and her first video. For me, it's the most catchy and interesting thing she does (though I do like "Song No. 6"). It's a song about earworms, and it itself has been stuck in my head for over a week now, ever since I watched the video on the website to decide whether I wanted to go to the show or not. The video itself is clever, touching, and a bit ghoulish in a silent movie sort of way: http://www.anebrun.com/video_media An eyeworm, maybe? - --pb ------------------------------ Date: Tue, 15 Aug 2006 22:50:24 -0400 From: meredith Subject: Re: Dresden Dolls tour dates (Europe, Australia/NZ and US) Hi, Kat Crowder wrote: > I really enjoy Jason Webley's music, and he's doing the NZ leg of the tour > with them. I saw him play a couple years ago, and he was great. I particularly enjoyed the part where he was about to play a drinking song, and since it was very early in the evening he had everyone in the room spin around really fast 5 times while looking up at the ceiling, so we could all be in the proper frame of mind to sing along. *g* - -- =============================================== Meredith Tarr New Haven, CT USA mailto:meth@smoe.org http://www.smoe.org/meth =============================================== hear at the HOMe House Concert Series http://hom.smoe.org =============================================== ------------------------------ End of ecto-digest V12 #216 ***************************
