We used to be alot more active us nordic people, but somehow it was alot easier to be so in my younger days :P Anyways ... Wanna recommend a norwegian jazz trio that I discovered at the Jazz Festival here in Molde called Kobert. Really really charming band - the singer is originally 15 minutes with car from where my office is. If you can find their debut then you should really give it a try. I did see Kristin Asbjxrnsen (Dadafon and Krxyt) perform spirituals in the church here - amazing as always and performing bare foot as always. She had the guitarist from Dadafon with her together with a second guitar player and a guy on percussion. "And I Can't Stand Still" is the title of the first Dadafon album and she sure can't - hypnotic! Any of you seen Gogol Bordello live? If not then you should do so - amazingly funny indeed. - -- Yngve ------------------------------ Date: Mon, 14 Aug 2006 09:48:12 -0400 From: meredith Subject: Re: Recommendations from Denmark :-) Hi, Yngve inquired: > Any of you seen Gogol Bordello live? Yes, once -- it was too loud (even with earplugs) so I was discouraged from going to see them again, but the best way to describe them would have to be "batshit insane". :) (woj likes leaving his glasses at home and hanging out in the pit.) Everyone in the room couldn't help but have a good time. When I saw them their opening act was DeVotchKa, an Eastern European/gypsy band from Denver via the Ukraine that I can't recommend highly enough. Their lead singer sounds a lot like a richer-voiced Ian McCulloch, and really, any band including theremin *and* a tuba festooned with red Christmas lights has to be great. :) (I've also seen them on a bill with Regina Spektor, and that was a good night as well.) - -- =============================================== Meredith Tarr New Haven, CT USA mailto:meth@smoe.org http://www.smoe.org/meth =============================================== hear at the HOMe House Concert Series http://hom.smoe.org =============================================== ------------------------------ Date: Mon, 14 Aug 2006 09:39:19 -0500 From: "Jeffrey Burka" Subject: Duncan Sheik's touring band I knew I'd forget to mention something in that last e-mail. I kept thinking that Duncan Sheik's guitarist's playing sounded familiar (lots of e-bow, very cool sounds regardless of how he was playing) and when Duncan gave his name, I recognized it, though I couldn't place it. The guitarist was Gerry Leonard and, as I determined once I got home, I actually have quite a few CDs on which he plays, including the second Chanting House CD, Suzanne Vega's _Songs in Red and Gray_, and others. Overall, the band was quite capable (if a bit loud, particularly following Vienna's set), but Gerry was definitely the highlight. jeff ------------------------------ Date: Mon, 14 Aug 2006 09:34:47 -0500 From: "Jeffrey Burka" Subject: Vienna Teng @ the Birchmere 8/13/06 So Vienna passed through the DC area again last night on her tour with Duncan Sheik and my partner and I, along with Mike Matthews and his wife, went to see the show. Vienna's billing it as a co-headlining thing and, indeed, her "opening" set was a full 75 minutes, including an encore. That's about as Aimee Mann played last month when she appeared alone on the bill at the same venue. The set list included quite a bit from the first and third albums, with just "Shasta" from _Warm Strangers_. Additionally, there were no covers this time around, which based on the last several times I've seen her, is something of a change. And even beyond that, while much was the same (e.g. Vienna's fairly typical banter), this show had quite a bit different from previous tours. For one, instead of a single accompanist (Alan Lin, Marika Hughes), Vienna is touring with both her long time cellist Marika Hughes, as well as Dina Maccabbee on viola and violin. To make things more interesting, Duncan Sheik's drummer came out and joined in on his kit for "Love Turns 40", "1 BR/1BA", and, "I Don't Feel So Well." The sound from the stage is much richer and the arrangements more interesting. The highlight was probably the closing song of the main set, "City Hall," which was performed by Vienna solo at the piano, while Dina and Marika stood on the stage and did this hysterically funny pantomime in which they acted out the lyrics of the entire song. Despite being funny, it was also extremely touching (perhaps especially to hear/watch in the rather ass-backward state of virginia!). It's also worth noting that Vienna played keys on a couple of songs for Duncan Sheik, and Dina and Marika were also brought out for several songs. Since then, we've made an effort to get out to see them whenever they play in NYC. They're pretty much the polar opposite of the female artists we listen to but what a blast! Eugene Hutz also occasionally DJs at nightclubs in NY playing Eastern Bloc dance music, and those nights are just about as decadent as GB's live performances. The last one he hosted at Menahata got raided and shut down by the cops, fortunately after we had already left! Finally, Hutz is excellent playing Alex in the 2005 movie "Everything is Illuminated" co-starring Elijah Wood - I highly recommend it. >When I saw them their opening act was DeVotchKa, an Eastern >European/gypsy band from Denver via the Ukraine that I can't >recommend highly enough. We saw them open for Lhasa last year, which ended up being on of my favorite shows of 2005. There just aren't enough bands playing theramins these days. DeVotchKa fans should check out the new film "Little Miss Sunshine" -- they wrote & performed the score. - --Sue Trowbridge ------------------------------ Date: Mon, 14 Aug 2006 19:10:12 -0400 From: "JoAnn Whetsell" Subject: new natalie walker (formerly of Daughter Darling) Natalie Walker (of Daughter Darling) has gone out on her own with Urban Angel, her solo debut. It's available at CDBaby, and you can listen to samples of every song at http://cdbaby.com/cd/nataliewalker CDBaby's description says"It's her solo album debut. "With musical influences ranging from Alison Krauss to Portishead, Jewel to Lauryn Hill, Beth Orton to Bjork, the former lead singer of downtempo electronic group Daughter Darling now delivers her own unique, haunting sonic landscape that is at once organic, ethereal, elegant and entrancing." It's a different sound than Daughter Darling, quite varied. I don't find it as captivating based on the samples, but it does sound like a worthwhile purchase.
