There are a bunch of inter-related things I've been wanting to share here, and I've woven them together... I apologize if it's an overly-long email. After taking a little bit of a music fast for the first part of the summer (I didn't listen to my iPod anywhere but at the gym for nearly two months... Very unlike me), I've suddenly gone into new music overload. I've got some recommendations, as well as responses to recommendations I've gotten here: First I used my monthly batch of 40 downloads at emusic.com to get four new albums. The new Azam Ali and Terami Hirsch's "Entropy 29" were recommended here. Ali is clearly utterly and absolutely transcendent, and I'll need some time to get fully inside her work. Hirsch struck me as one of those young Ectoes who doesn't fully succeed in establishing herself as distinct from her influences... I have some of the same mixed feelings about her that I have about Charlotte Martin or Vienna Teng. But I do really love aspects of her work, believe it will grow on me, and look forward to hearing more. With my other two downloads, I picked up the album by "The Tiny," which coincidentally was mentioned by our Danish friend (I became interested in them before she mentioned them). They do the kind of unpredictable, meandering compositions that drive me wild. Lovely organic instrumentation... most songs involve cello, which I also heavily dig. The vocalist is in the same powerful-little-girl vein as Joanna Newsom or the one woman from CocoRosie (although more accessible/less intense than those two examples). Then, looking for something with 9 tracks or less, I stumbled upon Rachel Cantu -- has anyone heard of her? Mellow-moody rock-chick-type. AMG threw around some random comparisons to Kristin Hersh and Cat Power, her website throws around even more random comparisons to Bjork and Patty Griffin. I think she's most comparable to Rachael Yamagat's Malcolm Burn-produced EP. Definitely a style we've heard before, but she does it quite well. Shortly after my emusic downloads, my new issue of "Paste" arrived... And I went shopping for: - --Ane Brun, "A Temporary Dive." This was actually another one our Danish friend recommended. Absolutely 100% solid and awesome and haunting. Moody, depressing acoustic guitar stuff. Cites Ani as an influence, but I only hear that in the quality of some of her open tunings. Her guitar technique is strong, but more delicate than Ani. Paste's comparisons to Elliot Smith and Nick Drake are probably more accurate. Her voice also some of that same girly-but-powerful quality, but with a little bit more of that folkish, world-weary quality. I actually think Kristin Hersh comparisons would be accurate here. - --Camille, "Le Fil," ....she does awesome stuff backing herself with her own vocalizations. A warmer voice than I'd expected from the way she'd been described to me. (Someone I know called her a French "Bjork." People really need to stop throwing Bjork's name around. I feel it's very rarely accurate in any way.) Definitely must-hear. - --Lisa Germano, "In the Maybe World," Typical dream-like downcast Lisa. The fairytale subject matter and its obsession w/ death is pretty great. I'm really impressed by how she's able to do quite a lot with very little (very very little vocally, at least... Clearly a talented instrumentalist and producer). - --Dayna Kurtz, "Another Black Feather." Dayna's "Beautiful Yesterday" was one of my favorite albums of 2004. If you haven't heard her, she's a must. She's probably one of the strongest vocalists recording currently. Her own songwriting is good, but it's really the quality of her interpretations that set her apart. Deep, resonant alto that she uses for a variety of jazz/folk/blues, etc. material. What I kind of wish Norah Jones was or could be. This album is a little bit rootsier and less jazz-folk moody than her last, with lots of lap steel and the like... The opening track is a little bit hoedown for my taste... But pretty much everything she does is worth hearing. - --Beirut, "Gulag Orkestar." Beirut is one of those indie rock bands that's actually a single person, songwriter Zach Condon. This is the kind of rich, multi-instrumental "indie rock" I go for... Think Rufus, Sufjan or Andrew Bird. But definitely has his own thing going. More gypsy-like. I've also been on a serious Kate kick (inside... He he). "Hounds of Love," "The Sensual World," and more recently "Aerial" have been favorites for quite a while, but I've never dedicated enough time to familiarizing myself w/ her early work, as I've been doing lately. Have particularly been enjoying "Never For Ever" and "The Dreaming." As much respect as this list pays to Kate, I still feel like there's something missing from the homages to her I've seen here and in the Guide To Good Music. The quality of her voice and songwriting are frequently mentioned, but it's so much more than that... I don't think anyone pays enough attention to her composition and production skills, which are possibly some of the most impressive in "pop" music and really elevate her work to an entirely different artistic plane. It's invariably some small and ingenious production element that I find most haunting in the majority of her work... Be it the gregorianesque chants in "Hello Earth," the chorus of male voices in "Deeper Understanding," or the brilliant and unexpected spanish guitar on "Sunset" (from a "Sky of Honey")... F-ing amazing. ...and speaking of Kate. I didn't grow up watching videos, so I'd never seen any of hers until I began YouTubeing them last week, and I'm completely blown away by their artfulness (altho I'd expect nothing less) Although "Cloudbusting" has been one of my all-time favorite songs for quite some time, I had no idea that it was actually about a crazed and persecuted scientist/psychiatrist as seen through the eyes of his son. It brings a whole new level of intensity to a song that I'd already imbued with my own meanings. I can't help but compare these videos with Hannah Fury's video for Carnival Justice (The Gloves are Off Part Whatever), which I finally got around to watching several weeks ago. I had no idea how much Hannah's appearance eerily resembles Kate's. Unfortunately, the video is utterly disappointing. Made poorly on a tiny budget and clearly lacking in any vision -- the fascinating puppets whose photos I've been seeing for months seem wasted and purposeless. Has anyone else seen it? Thoughts? Finally, there are multiple August albums that I am eagerly awaiting (several have already been mentioned here), including... - -New Carina Round - -First album from "My Brightest Diamond." - -Patricia Barber's song cycle based upon Ovid's Metamorphasis, which is already getting great reviews. - -Debut album from "Persephone's Bees," a Cardigans-esque 60's-influenced woman-fronted group whom I can't wait to hear. Also, my buying binge is not entirely complete. Paste recommended a Swedish band called "The Knife" that sound like ideal Ecto material (comparisons to Kate, Laurie Anderson and Bjork). Has anyone heard/heard of them? They sound magnificent. Also, thanks to the Ecto-Guide, I've realized that it's necessary that I experience Diamanda Galas.. But I'm having trouble finding any retailers in my area who keep her stuff in stock... Too intense for the average listener, I guess. So I may have to order. Thanks for putting up with my length and rambling, tim ------------------------------ Date: Fri, 04 Aug 2006 23:50:37 -0500 From: Timothy Jones-Yelvington Subject: Also... ...has anyone listened to the new Edie Brickell? In no particular order 1) Happy Rhodes 2) Kate Bush 3) Kevin Ayers 4) John Martyn 5) Patty Larkin 6) Dan Hicks 7) Bill Nelson 8) Jane Siberry 9) Antonio Carlos Jobim 10)Todd Rundgren 11)Greg Brown 12)Fred Frith 13)Brian Eno 14)Tom Verlaine 15)David Sylvian 16)John Cale (blows away Lou's solo stuff) 17)Dean Warehem 18)Ani Difranco 19)Ben Folds 20)Fleetwood Mac(Kirwan, Spencer, Welch, Weston) (doesn't suffer overplay of later lineup) Anyone care to add on? ------------------------------ End of ecto-digest V12 #206 ***************************
