Their debut album is called Close Enough http://www.thetiny.net/ and they'll have another album out soon. In my experience, Pandora is a great place to discover new artists. Whenever I create my Tori Winter-radio or Rosie Bicycle Tricycle-radio it recommends me Hayley Westenra's Never Seen Blue. A great pianodriven song. Apparently, this Hayley-woman is from New Zealand. I also discovered Damien Rice and Christine Fellows this way. I'll get myself a Regina Radio asap :-) Cheers, Leonora "If you always do what interests you, at least one person is pleased." Emilie Simon is great. She's responsible for the soundtrack to that awful movie, La Marche de L'Empereur, and I honestly didn't like what I heard at the time. All those penguins were marching across the South Pole and this woman was whispering her sweet vocals over watery soundscapes. Heartfelt in an over the top patehtic kind of way, in my opinion. Anyway, I bought myself a copy of Vigital while in Paris, and it took me by surprise. This woman even has temper! Speaking of which: Pauline Groze seems to be huge in Paris. She's more upbeat, but her self-titled debut is certainly promising. Sorry for all these postings this morning (or whatever time it is where you are..) She is, kinda. (Definitely marketed as such.) Just finished (?) a European tour with Il Divo. Which sucks, because her voice is way nicer than that, but Il Divo made it impossible to actually go and see her, everything being sold out months in advance. (I'd never heard of Il Divo a couple of months ago, but this made me loathe them instantly.) :) One could say that her songs lack feeling, but I prefer to take the more positive attitude of them being very cerebral (I think that's the word). Either way, I'm a fan, and even if she isn't in my top 20 of favorite artists, she probably makes the top 100. Of ecto-interest, she has a cover of The Mummers' Dance on the bonus disc of her album Pure as well, though that cover sounds less interesting than the Wuthering Heights one. I'd put her on the far "good background music"-y side of ecto, but ecto nonetheless. YMMV. But I just finally got around to listening it and was pretty much blown away. For some reason, I had it in my head that this was a guitar rock/pop-heavy departure that I might appreciate as a stage in Sarah's artistic development but not fully fall in love with. But it's actually just as diverse and layered as her other work. If possible, I think it's actually a more accomplished artistic statement than "Night Bugs." Brilliant use of varied styles, textures, dynamics, rhythms that all cohere beautifully. I literally found myself saving at least five different songs to my "on-the-go" playlist for use in later mix CDs. While I like her early more ethereal more obviously Ecto-y stuff, I think Sarah has made really smart choices to set herself apart (from Tori in particular) with diverse material and to play up her more unique characteristics like that old-timey vibrato she uses to such great effect on songs like "Elliot" and "Book Smart, Street Stupid" and to go for pop accessibility but in sophisticated and complex ways. I think she may be one of the most distinctive, adventurous and multiply-talented composers of the younger crop of ectoes. Which makes it even more criminal that the green, self-titled EP is her only US release!!!! ------------------------------ Date: Tue, 01 Aug 2006 22:47:29 -0500 From: Timothy Jones-Yelvington Subject: Re: ss Looked at the Music Guide and realized that Sarah Slean's stylistic shifts have indeed already been debated ad nauseum.
