There was a reason for this: Norwich is just...way out there, isolated and adrift on the broads. My son went to University out there, and it's a nice enough town with the usual town/gown conflicts, lovely mustard (Coleman's is based there) and a great market and new library/arts centre but, as some friends of ours who live and teach out there say, it's a pretty shallow gene pool. Apparently the residents of Norwich were not amused by Alan Partridge. I once did extra work out there on "The Chief" (another of Norwich's jewels, starring Martin Shaw) and found out that we were in the red light district. I was amazed that Norwich HAD a red light district, but there you go. Oh, and for the Brits on the list with too much time on their hands: "Trisha" is filmed there (actually, I'm not sure if it is, any more). adam k. - ----------------------------------------------- This mail sent through http://webmail.zoom.co.uk ------------------------------ Date: Wed, 19 Jul 2006 17:03:32 -0700 From: cyo Subject: Serious female singers harder to find anywhere! Sorry, I too agree with Timothy Jones-Yelvington about that article and sexism within the music biz. Just because it doesn't mention Happy or Kate, as it's obviously aimed at larger pop stars, doesn't mean it isn't relevent to ectolist readers. That article actually meant a lot to me, also being in the same catagory as a Happy, a mid-level, mid-career female singer that doesn't fit into any mold or genre', it's really difficult to even survive, even a Happy, with an amazing 4-5 octave voice would not survive without the support of this list and loyal fans like you. I also have won awards, toured endlessly, put out 4 amazing albums all on my own, have a strong stage presence and serious singer voice and like her, mostly ignored by press & all avenues of mainstream including the sidestreets (the things that help singer songwriters in unusual genres keep going like good bookers, good pr assistance, small label help etc..). It's a mightly hard road to hoe if you are not a "babe". An article that shows the inherent sexism of the country and the biz, that always prefers a young bouncing blonde non writing "singer" Britany-babe (but attacks her as soon as she becomes a mom, or gains a few pounds, or ages at all) to serious musicians like Sarahs and Happys, a biz that considered Fiona Apple old at 28 but not male singers into their 50s even, is seriously screwed up and very sexist. Please remember how they attacked Kate's latest, a wonderful piece of art I think as being "women's music" and "songs about her baby"...very belittling to an artistic concept album from a major female writer! I wonder if all the male rock songs singing about babes & booties is labeled "male music" and that's ok, but not to write a song for your child. Strange strange world. I love the things Pink says and does, even though her music style is not for me, she's strong and out-spoken but has to stay in her punkish box they have put her into because she's not a babe, not a hottie, not Beyonci-perfect, she's, dare I say, a real woman! Scarey I guess. And it's not about sex or sexy, as Pink is both, but more about being "one dimentional". Why does American want it's women one dimentional, young, hot, dumb and blonde? (controllable?) Anyway, all those thoughts come up after thinking about that article, at least it makes folks stop and think, wonder why did the good women musicians/singers disappear? It made me feel better in my lone struggle to continue to tour, create unusual music with powerful lyrics in a strong voice when sometimes I think "what am I doing all this hard grunt work for again?' "Why do I have to kiss a million asses just so I can share my gift with a few folks now and then? Why do I do weeks of ugly demeaning promo work so I can sing like a bird for 40 minutes?" Oh yeah, now I remember, because, as an artist, I must, I was born to sing and pop music and banal lyrics bore me. Oh yeah, because I was born a redhead with mid-sized breasts, not a blonde with giant ones. Oh yeah, because I refused to sleep with producers in my short stint when I went to LA and almost got signed. And then to see that the good singers at the top (the top to me), the Aimee Mans and the Jewels and Sarah's still having problems, you don't feel so alone. The good news of the article also helped, the older generation, the Bonnie Raits and the Emmylus helping the younger women on the path, now that's good news. Stay positive, do what you were meant to do on this planet, follow your heart & art, what else can any of us do in this lifetime? peace, Cyoakha Grace ------------------------------ Date: Thu, 20 Jul 2006 20:11:40 +0100 From: Chris Morriss Subject: Re: Norwich, distant suburb of the East ;-) In message <1153387410.44bf4b92836d8@webmail.zoom.co.uk>, adamk@zoom.co.uk writes >Alan Partridge fans will recognise Norwich as the setting for the "I'm Alan >Partridge" series, where he worked for a local radio station. My theory is, not a lot easier at all. There are a lot of problems with music and the world in general, but I do not see them in terms of gender issues as much as in this case, with the general business model. As I always say, the problem with music industry is that it is an industry... Yes, the executives want their artists to be marketable, which according to their market research means young and pretty. Do you think for a moment if the public expressed preference for anything else they would hesitate to deliver? And above all, they want someone controllable. None of this is actually gender-dependent. I am not familiar with American Idol, but I'm pretty sure it is no different from Australian Idol contests I've seen - it's the same franchise after all. What are those judges looking for, really? They want someone with performing skill, reasonable singing ability, and above all someone who, after working pretty hard to develop these skills, is ready to submit themselves to their will. The whole issue is illustrated by two statements made by the winner of our first series, a (male) performer by the name of Guy Sebastian. In one, he complained how he feels he deserves, but doesn't get, the same respect as (independent, female artist) Missy Higgins because he has just as much talent and works just as hard as she! In another comment he talked about how just after winning the contest he would've liked to take some time off, but his record company wanted him to make a record quickly, to capitalize on his current celebrity status... so he dutifully went to the studio and made a record. Now, Missy Higgins first got a bit of publicity after winning "JJJ Unearthed" competition... and what did she do? She dropped out of sight for a while, because she felt the need to travel overseas. Later she came back, made a record, and did OK for herself... and this is the difference in the nutshell - I would like to say to Guy: "Look - the reason you're not getting the same respect has nothing to do with your work ethic or even talent. It's just that Missy Higgins is an artist - and you're an employee!" Yes, recording industry no longer wants to deal with artists. They would rather employ people on a minimum per-hour salary, if they could! But this is not a gender issue.... I'm sure there are any number of independent, strong-willed male artists out there who feel they are not getting the breaks they deserve because, sadly, they are not pretty enough, not female, and not willing to turn out the sort of 'product' the industry wants them to... And they are probably right. ------------------------------ Date: Thu, 20 Jul 2006 21:33:32 -0400 From: Robert Lovejoy Subject: Re: 10 worst album covers ever PBS (hmmm, Kerry....?) had a decent first album cover! They used a bit of Bosch's "Garden of Earthly Delights" They had pretty decent album covers generally as I remember. I wonder if anyone covers them now? I love puns. Help me. I was at S.U in the late sixties and may have been at that show, Kerry. I remember seeing them there. Their first album was 1967 so I was a Junior. Hard at this age to believe I ever was a Junior. Music in the sixties; new ground being broken all the time. But I digress.
