I'm not going to update the front page and the rss until I'm sure it's all working properly. I'm going to migrate myself over to my brand new $9.24 web host, so that's in the works. Hello 'philes, The schedule for this year's Vancouver Folk Festival, as well as mini-bios of all performers went up at the site a couple days ago. You can now see it all at http://www.thefestival.bc.ca/artists.php Jane Siberry is headlining on Sunday night on the Main Stage! It only makes sense to showcase Canada's pride to close out the festival. Jane (and other people I'm looking forward to seeing) also perform at the following times: Saturday 1230, Stage 4 with Eliza Gilkyson (host), Jane, Kelly Joe Phelps Saturday 5:30 Stage 3 with Najma, Jane (host), and Tanya Tagaq (wow!). FYI, Saturday night's Main Stage performers include Ruthie Foster, Eliza G., Ray Wylie Hubbard (RWH), the Bhatts, and Feist. Nice lineup. Sunday 1115 Stage 2 Najma (alone), Stage 3 Dan Bern (host), RWH, and Jane. Oooooh, choices, choices! 1145 The Grande Mothers. Just a quick clarification-Personally, I never cared for Frank Zappa's music back in the day. A little too, well, slimy (lyrically) and a bit weird for my tastes. But after witnessing the Grande Mothers last year, twice, I grew to appreciate just how much of an artist Frank really was, musically. Certainly non-ecto music, yes, but these guys are worth your attention, IMHO. :) 4:15 Jane (host), and others Sunday night Main Stage (7pm): Corquieu, Tanya Tagaq, and Jane to close. Cost for each day is approximately $54 US. Now where else can you spend $54 each day to see Jane perform twice on Saturday and three times on Sunday? In the absolute most peaceful and nurturing atmosphere of ANY festival I've ever attended? Not to mention everyone else? Such a bargain! My home is available for any list member who may want to crash the night before to save hotel fare. I live in Ferndale WA, 10 miles south of the border. I can get to the fest from my place within an hour. Contact me personally if interested. Bring a sleeping bag. Ha, yeah, there's that one. Shoot, I already have tha show put together (it'll probably be #11). I followed it up with "Tickled Whale" by Caterwaul. I couldn't seem to find anything else that fit. I don't speak a word of German (ok, I can count to 7) even though my paternal grandmother came from the Black Forest region when she was a child, but I just love how Nina sounds when she's singing that. It would probably detract for me if I knew the words (I looked up the lyrics which is why I know what the song's about) because I'd be too busy listening to the words instead of just enjoying the song. I think it's a shame I don't speak any other languages, but I still love playing songs that aren't in English if I enjoy the music and voice. Sometimes knowing the lyrics can detract from songs. Nothing hurts a great song more than banal lyrics. Look at the Bulgarian Chorus. They have achingly beautiful and amazing songs, but they're about things like harvesting wheat and making dresses and things like that. On the other hand, if Kate for instance, sang in another language, I'd be missing out on some fantastic lyrics. I'm looking forward to hearing this one! neal (on vacation in Yosemite) The incredible voice of Niyaz and Vas branches out with what is being described as her most ambitious solo release to date. The album entitled Elysium for the Brave weaves Ali's many influences into a haunting tapestry of atmospheric rock, electronic and global sounds. Singing predominantly in English for the first time, the songs are based on lyrics written by Azam herself and reveal a poetic lyricism heard only in glimpses in her previous works. Helping to seamlessly bring all of these diverse sounds together is a talented cast of musicians which includes King Crimson's rhythm section of Trey Gunn and Pat Mastelotto, Persian classical violinist Kiavash Nourai, Loga Ramin Torkian and Carmen Rizzo, Azam's collaborators in Niyaz, and noted film composers Tyler Bates and Jeff Rona, the latter of whom is known for his collaborations with Dead Can Dance. Azam Ali's Elysium for the Brave is set for release on July 25 on Six Degrees Records. ------------------------------ Date: Wed, 21 Jun 2006 21:49:30 -0700 From: Ed Cole Subject: Re: VFF Schedule/Profiles are up!
