A salutory lesson, here, and I'm sure I'm not alone in this one: I recently received my copy of Fripp's Exposure re-release/remaster/Special Ed, something I've been after for a while. So far, I've only had time to listen to a couple of the tracks (Hammill's glorious vocal on "Chicago" and the lovely low-key version of "Here comes the flood")but look forward to finding some time and slipping into it. But...being one of those upon whom age has bestowed a certain geekdom, I've got an Access database in which I enter all my CDs (how sad is that? No, I know, I know) and put down, among other things, the date I bought it. Recently, realising that I was replacing a lot of my old, totally knackered but beloved vinyl copies, I also put in a field in which to enter "Originally bought" which is full of dates like 1976 through 1980. And so, on receipt of the Fripp yesterday, I entered the date: 19th June, 2006. Then I found my orginal vinyl copy, pulled out the sleeve, looked in the corner to see where I'd written the date all those years ago: 19th June, 1979. 27 years to the day. Jeez, where did THAT time go? There should be a name for this kind of condition, the one that leaves you spluttering, "What? No, but it was just yesterday, I swear!" or, as I'm prone to say: "27 years ago? No, that's impossible, I was JUST THERE". That feeling that, having walked from one room of a house into another, blissfully believing that you're only next door and will pop back in just a minute, you then realise that not only is that room now miles away, but that you can't find your way back to it. Suggestions on a postcard, please. The kicker is, the album still sounds as vital today as it did all those years ago. As long as I'm rambling, I've remembered another phenonemon from the vinyl age: the listening to a new album and wondering, when the first side is over, whether it's worth turning it over. Is there a name for this? There were times when I felt that I'd heard all I needed to hear from the first side and that I didn't have the need to hear the second, thus saving myself the energy required to get up and turn it over. This judgemental phenonemon has, I've found, carried over to the digital age. Listening to the new album by an eccentric duo (no names, here) I find that, after each track, after each overbearing serving of arch, posturing, barking campness, I have to decide whether it's worth my time or energy even carrying on to the next track, as I feel they've already said everything they possibly can in the one I've just heard. Each successive track merely confirms my pessimism: more of the same, more of the same and more again. Well, that's my slice of snobbery for the day. Time for a sit down and a nice cup of tea. adam k. np: a special "work" mix, verrrry quietly to get me through the day without annoying my co-workers nr: Wise Children by Angela Carter - ----------------------------------------------- This mail sent through http://webmail.zoom.co.uk ------------------------------ Date: Tue, 20 Jun 2006 09:41:52 -0400 From: Rod K Subject: Re: Suspended in Gaffa podcast Vickie said: >> I guess I just need to break down and get the kids new >> iPod's so I can use the old Mini. > Wow, you'd spend all that money just to listen to my > shows?? Yikes! Actually... I do listen to other stuff too :) The "old" iPods my girls have need to be replaced. The kids don't listen to the "stereo" anymore, they all have iPod's in it's place. My kids have outgrown their's, plus the 20GB one had a disk crash, and the other has an 4GB mini that needed a new battery. So my daughters let me get them new iPods for Fathers Day. I replaced the mini's battery and I now have my own delightfully pink iPod Mini. So, the length of the shows isn't a problem any more. I will second the comment that Michael made about not knowing what is being played when listening away from the computer. Now that I have an actual iPod I am starting to understand some of the comments I've heard people make about Podcasts and mobile music in general. I have only this thing a few days and already I'm getting used to looking at the display to see the artist and song name when an unfamiliar song plays. I think until you use one of these players you can't really grok what it's like. >> Makes me wonder what people think when they pick up <> SIG from my transmitter. > Isn't that annoying though? You're listening to > something then get the next car's music? I don't > get it. It doesn't happen very often so it's not really annoying, it's actually kind of weirdly fun. Here is how I have things setup in my car. I have my "new" iPod (said pink mini) connected to a very short range FM transmitter, an iTrip from Griffin. It's designed to let you play music on the MP3 player and hear it through your a radio, in my case the car stereo. You go through the FM dial on your car radio and try to find a frequency where there aren't any local stations. This can be an issue in areas like Chicago, NY, LA where the dial is pretty crowded, not so much here on the Suncoast in FL. Then you set the iTrip to transmit on that frequency and program one of the car radio presets to that station. Or, in my daughter's case, she sets all the presets as she doesn't ever listen to any traditional radio stations. Now you can play music on the iPod and hear it through the car stereo. Every now and then, maybe every other month, we will be sitting at a stop light and someone that has the same setup in their car will stop next to us. If their transmitter is on the same frequency and has more power than ours we can hear their music for a few moments. I've even seen cars with bumper stickers that have the frequency they have their transmitter set to so people can purposely tune in to what they are listening to. Rod n.p. With the last show, I added some tags to the rss feed for iTunes that is supposed to scroll the names of the artists on the iPod's display screen. I don't know if I did it right or if it works (no one's said anything to me and I don't have an iPod (yet :). I suppose that doesn't help anyway if someone doesn't get the podcasts from iTunes. I'm thinking about doing what I did for my Chicago shows. I recorded them on reel-to-reel and then dropped the tape off at the station (for years they got around the "students-only" rule by saying, well, students can play anything they want, so my slot was billed as being played by the student who came before my show. They tightened up that loophole which is why my show went off the air in Chicago). I saved time at the end and recorded a separate track with snippets of the songs I had played. At the end I played that track and talked over it. So a bit of Happy would play and I'd say "And this was Happy Rhodes, blah blah blah." It was like using the snippets I provide to identify songs. It's a thought. Or not. I don't know how I'll do it. Decisions decisions. > Now that I have an actual iPod I am starting to understand > some of the comments I've heard people make about Podcasts and > mobile music in general. Stations that don't backannounce bother me and I hate to be guilty of the same thing. The web page is there, but useless if you're not at a computer. What people need is a combination mp3 player/web browser! Or me to backannounce, I guess. Thanks for the info about the FM transmitter. I'll have to tell my bro-in-law about that. That shouldn't matter, I don't think. The info is in the file no matter what, right? I'll have to try it and let you know. Another possibility: forward-announce. I still really like _Oyster_ (and _Glow Stars_) but I've found that the production on recent albums (and a turn toward more consciously "pretty" songs) has ruined recent Heather for me, so I've stopped paying attention to her new releases. No one should be too surprised that another act have now used the MySpace website - which spreads word of a band (and their downloadable songs) via a growing network of internet "friends" - to launch themselves to stardom. The difference is that Hope Against Hope are a scam, a spoof indie band "with no talent whatsoever" invented by Q magazine in order to prove that the Rupert Murdoch-owned site is now just another cog in the older industry phenomenon of hype. After just four weeks, Hope Against Hope had a devoted fanbase. Alan McGee - once a member of Tony Blair's Creative Industry Taskforce, and the man who discovered Oasis and the Libertines - even offered them a gig at his influential Death Disco club night. But while McGee is portrayed as the butt of the joke, he was only doing his job - responding to a "buzz".
