Then when the female vocals came in I thought sounds just like Matthew Sweet and Susanna Hoffs (also good)!! They just put out a new record together. They're calling themselves Sid & Susie. It's all covers of 60s songs. I didn't know them all, but I liked them all. Anyone else heard this? Oh and Kmeelyon, if you like the Winterpills this much you owe it to yourself to give the Sid & Susie record a listen. :) ~Amy www.collectedsounds.com PS: here's a link for those interested: They have a MySpace (who doesn't, really?) where you can hear clips. http://www.myspace.com/sidnsusie I also reviewed it on my site but so no one thinks I'm posting only for hits, I won't post the link. You know where to find it ;) ------------------------------ Date: Sun, 21 May 2006 11:10:39 -0700 From: Russ Subject: Patti Smith was: things we don't get You know, I don't understand why Patti Smith isn't more popular among the ecto-folk. She is soulful; her sound is simple stripped down rock, though it gets pretty minimalistic - which sounds ecto-ish to my ear. Anyone who doubts this need only check out "Under the Southern Cross" from her album "Gone Again". Patti is *awesome* ! A true pioneer, a radical ! - - Russ Kmeelyon wrote: > Re: the Natalie Merchant cover of "Because the Night," maybe if it was > the first time I'd heard the song, I'd think it was pleasant. Yeah, it looks like I opened a whole can 'o worms. While, again, I apologise for the negative vibes, I have to say it's great to see the list so active. I feel it's been a bit quiet recently, so it's good to see this kind of interest. To put a further tuppence in, I never got Jane Siberry, either, despite the purchase of a comprehensive anthology. I didn't feel particularly frustrated, however: even though she had many supporters among this fine list and I found it a bit arty and self-satisfied, I knew that this was a matter of taste and that, really, there was no reason why I SHOULD like her. With all due respect. Okay, promptly moving on and, hopefully, getting myself out of a hole: I'd like to hear more from the Werefrogs, who released one swirling, swaying, guitar-drenched album, "Sway", in the early 90s and, toured with Suede opening for THEM, then completely disappeared off the face of the earth. I'd like to hear more from an artist called Naomi, who released a very promising album, "Liquid", of partly soulful, partly generic rock with a great, bluesy voice back in 1999...and then completely disappeared off the face of the earth. Ditto Swelling Meg, whose album, "roc" was fractured folk/rock, an acquired taste which I'm not totally sure I acquired, but which intrigued me. I'd like to hear more from Ruby, whose last album, "short staffed at the gene pool" was a disappointment, but it's been a whle, now. And what's happened to Sparklehorse? Not a peep since 2000. I'm sure that one of you out there knows. Oh, and I'd love to hear more from Matthew Jay, since his one album is sublime. But that's definitely not going to happen as he departed this earth a few years back. That's all for now, adam k. - ----------------------------------------------- This mail sent through http://webmail.zoom.co.uk ------------------------------ Date: Sun, 21 May 2006 17:12:38 -0600 From: neal copperman Subject: Loituma? Since I'm usually at the tail end of internet phenomena, perhaps everyone has already heard this. I'm completely smitten though: http://www.sinn-frei.com/loituma-live_3009.htm Apparently it is famous for this flash version, but the appeal for me is the song, not the video, so I liked seeing the people singing it. http://www.leekspin.com/ More info at http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ievan_Polkka I never heard of Loituma, but apparently it's been a launching pad for a lot of musicians who went on to be in Hedningarna. neal ------------------------------ End of ecto-digest V12 #132 ***************************
