Same here, all I can think of is the annoying ones. Lately I'm starting to think that any site that isn't on MySpace is a good site! But really, I think it can be boiled down to three rules: 1. Remember this is internet, not microsoft-net. Don't use tricks and media formats that are only available to Windows users. 2. Nice design is, well, nice, but don't let the form overwhelm the content. Resist the temptation to use tricks when plain HTML will do perfectly well (this ties to rule 1). 3. Having gone to the trouble of creating the site, make sure you keep it current. Nothing is more off-putting than a stale site, with the 'news' from last year! ------------------------------ Date: Wed, 26 Apr 2006 14:33:31 -0700 From: Nadyne Mielke Subject: Thea Gilmore on Neil Gaiman tribute album I haven9t seen this mentioned here yet ... I dislike website that require (1) active-x or java (but javascript is OK), or (2) pop-ups, (3) or Flash, especially Flash that does not show percent loaded. Nerina Pallot's website is a perfect example, it uses active-x and pop-ups and flash and every other feature in my firewall turned on... and it needs 6-10+ minutes to load, with nothing indicating percent loaded... but once loaded it is beautiful, I give her that. But I prefer much simpler websites and will visit them much more often, partially because they *are* simple, especially when they are updated fairly often... but I have to like the artist too. Off the top of my head, two favorites I visit often are Danya River http://www.danyariver.com/ Pamela Means http://www.pamelameans.com/ Of course, the fact that I love their music may affect me. :-) - -- Deb ------------------------------ Date: Wed, 26 Apr 2006 20:40:54 -0700 (PDT) From: "Xenu's Sister" Subject: Re: favourite or perfect websites (and MySpace, and Paris) - --- andrew fries wrote: > Karen Hester wrote: > > do you have any favourite websites for somewhat obscure > (i.e. most that we > > discuss) musicians? Here are a few. I know there's a lot more but I'd have to dig. I included their MySpace pages because that's where the immediate music is. If your band isn't on MySpace, they should be. http://emmgryner.com/ http://www.myspace.com/emmgryner http://ediemusic.com http://www.myspace.com/ediep http://www.shamsiruhe.com/ http://www.myspace.com/shamsiruhe http://www.carlawerner.com/ http://www.myspace.com/carlawerner http://www.queeniemusic.com/ http://www.myspace.com/queenie > > Same here, all I can think of is the annoying ones. > Lately I'm starting to think that any site that isn't > on MySpace is a good site! Oh now. Anyone who loves Happy should try to put aside their hatred of MySpace/Murdoch and rejoice in the fact that she's gotten more fans in the few months of MySpace exposure than she's gotten in the previous 10 years. And since I don't request adds from individuals, they're almost all musicians. Read the Comments. Read the Comments. Read the Comments. Yes I know the page is wordy and unwieldy, and getting moreso by the day, but I'm not particularly worried. Either the people who come to the page like the music or they don't. Either they want to read about her or they don't. Either they want to look at pictures or they don't. Plenty of people want to do all three. And no, sites that aren't on MySpace aren't automaticlly good. How can someone hate MySpace *that* much? Most of them suck, because most of them rely on stupid, ugly Flash to even get into the site. It apalls me how these artists are turning away fans, willingly and cheerfully telling their fans or potential fans to fuck off and go away. Yes MySpace uses Flash, but even someone without Flash can see Happy's MySpace page and read the bio and read the Comments. They can't listen to music, but I have a link to my song samples site. They can't see the slideshow, but they can see the other pictures on the page. > But really, I think it can be boiled down to three rules: > > 1. Remember this is internet, not microsoft-net. Nothing is more > off-putting than a stale site, with the 'news' > from last year! No kidding. Happy's guilty of that, in the most awful way. auntiesocialmusic.com is so out-of-date that it's turned around and what she writes on the front page is current again, since it's spring. I ***HATE*** sending people there. I hate listing it on all the pages I'm putting up for her. It drives me nuts. The person who was doing her web site isn't doing it anymore. I've offered to update it, but supposedly someone else is working on it. Supposedly there will be a re-launch when the album comes out. Since that might not be until 2010 (sarcasm) I wish she wouldn't wait. I don't care if she doesn't let me do it, but I wish she'd let SOMEONE do it, and do it NOW. It's just not right. It's embarrassing. Like it or not, Happy's MySpace does provide a way for non-ectophiles to read about her, hear her music, and get news updates, should there ever happen to be any. The page has gotten her contacts that could lead to some very cool collaborations in the future, and some nice word-of-mouth for the phantom Find Me. It's led to some nice contacts through the Bulletin feature. Happy asked me if I knew of any fans of hers in Paris, and since I didn't know of any on Ecto (unless my terrible memory is forgetting someone, in which case PLEASE forgive me), I posted a bulletin on MySpace. It goes out to everyone on Happy's Friends list. Not only did I get a fan in Paris to respond, it was an old friend of hers who moved there. Dave Sepowski, who worked with Happy on Building the Colossus, responded. He requested an add a while back, but under the name of "Blaze" and didn't mention Happy on his page, so I had no idea it was him until the Paris bulletin. That's too cool. No, I can't explain the Paris thing, but it's not related to her music or singing. It's a day job thing. Don't think I haven't tried to talk her into finding a venue and performing while she's there. She ignores my implorings so I assume it's not possible. Sigh. Btw, speaking of the slide show I just put up on Happy's MySpace page...I used lots of photos that weren't mine, and they're not credited. I plan to add even more. I don't even remember where I got some of them. If anyone sees a picture of theirs and wants it off the slide show, just tell me. I can edit it out in 2 seconds.
