(and i was real glad to see her in NYC last October.) i wish i knew of it in 1999 or whenever those Ectofests were happening. i missed them all, and the only place i ever got to see Happy perform was The Bottom Line (1996 and 2003), may it rest in pieces. i value this list big time. i have had a few occasions to get frustrated with it in a technical sense (the other frustrating issue was its one-way pipe to fa.music.ecto - i must have posted a dozen times there). those frustrations are my problem. - -- r b-j rbj@audioimagination.com "Imagination is more important than knowledge." ------------------------------ Date: Sun, 9 Apr 2006 03:00:03 -0400 (EDT) From: Mike Matthews Subject: Today's your birthday, friend... i*i*i*i*i*i i*i*i*i*i*i *************** *****HAPPY********* **************BIRTHDAY********* *************************************************** *************************************************************************** ********************** Jill Hughes (Riphug@aol.com) *********************** *************************************************************************** -=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=- - -=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=- Jill Hughes Sat April 09 1955 Aries Klaus Kluge Sun April 10 1960 Unicorn Steve VanDevender Sun April 10 1966 Racer Art Liestman Fri April 10 1953 Repeat Stephen Golden Sat April 10 1971 Jokey Michael Bowman Wed April 11 1962 Aries Wolfgang Ullwer Fri April 11 1969 Widder Janet Kirsch Thu April 11 1974 Aries Jerry Tue April 13 1971 Aries Stuart Myerburg Mon April 14 1969 Aries T-Bone Wed April 15 1992 happy cat Jeff Hanson Sat April 16 1966 Aries Michael Klouda Mon April 17 1967 Aries Noe Venable Tue April 20 1976 Aries Harry Foster Sat April 21 1956 NiceGuy Kjetil Torgrim Homme Thu April 23 1970 Taurus Jeff Burka Thu April 24 1969 GoFlyAKite Christine Waite Tue April 25 1972 Taurus Matt Adams Thu April 26 1962 Taurus Brad Hutchinson Tue April 28 1964 What sign? The yearly fee paid for 15 slots. You can buy extra slots but I can't spend any more. I'm a bit horrified at myself that I paid $50 for those 15 songs, but it's a good place run by real, and really nice, people, and it's not just a money-making operation. Besides, they're in the UK. I don't know why but I just love the fact that they're in the UK. Everything's cooler in the UK. > i might suggest some other songs to put there if Happy > is amenable to it. I took down Off From Out From Under Me (boohoo) and put up The Chariot and Ra. I also put up the album version of Temporary and Eternal, because I adore it beyond all reason and I think it's interesting to hear both versions back to back. > it was no surprize to me that the song this guy highlighted > was "Words ... Cowards". You're talking about Minus13, who is the Featured Artist of the week on the front page (http://www.mp3unsigned.com/) who left a Comment at how much he liked it. He said he wanted to remix it. That's not going to work out, but in a very bizarre turn of events, he wants to and *will* remix The Wretches Gone Awry! Not commercial, it's all for fun, but it will be fun. I have a feeling it's going to turn out to be something very special. People have to hear this guy. Click on his profile and click on the song "As low as u can get." It's a great song, musically and lyrically. Here's the brilliant chorus: "When you get as low as you can get, don't forget the time that you spent on a high. Good times fly by, don't come around that often so enjoy 'em while you got 'em. Can't live in the past, 'cause nothing ever lasts." He doesn't mean high as in drugs either, but high on just being alive. He's a positive rapper but without being smarmy. Anyone who has kids who listen to rap, this is the kind of rap you want them to be listening to. "Lunatic Fluid" is about how stupid people get when they're drunk. It's a positive message without being preachy. "Never Greener" is a fine piece of 70's-ish wacawaca instrumental electronica. I like the other songs too. So, based on his music he seems a really good guy, and is very talented. I never in a million years would have expected a UK-based rapper/hip hop artist would be interested in remixing a song like The Wretches Gone Awry (!!?!!), but it just points up why doing what I'm doing is so much fun. You never know what Happy song will pique people's ears and what's going to happen next. She seems to have a great range and I love the songs so far. I agree, her use of treatments on her voice etc. is quite reminiscent of Imogen, which is not too surprising since she's been collaborating with Guy Sigsworth (Imogen and Guy also happen to be listed among her top 8 Myspace friends. speaking of which, it's odd to see the private messages being exposed there, e.g. there's a note from Anneli Drecker to Kate telling her to call so they could go have lunch or something. the whole Myspace thing weirds me out a bit, but there's lots of nice music to be found there, so ...) http://www.myspace.com/katehavnevik > It says the first official release will be in Norway on April 3rd. thanks for the heads up! It was the last night of their co-bill tour together, wherein Melissa shared Erin's band (Alison Miller on drums, Julie Wolf on keys), and it ROCKED. Erin got things started with an hour-long set, which was very energetic despite the fact that she's getting over a bout of seasonal Ick. (Her voice improved as the set went on.) The set list included kickass versions of "Aspera", "Cinematic", "White City", "On The Moon", and "Blackbirds", as well as great takes on "James" and "You Were Right About Everything", among others. Melissa joined her on stage to sing backup and play guitar on "To The Stars", too. (There was also a brief break-dancing interlude on Melissa's part then, which was definitely a You Had To Be There moment, but trust me, it was priceless.) After a short intermission, Melissa took the stage solo and launched into "Freedom" ... and almost immediately broke a string. She managed to finish that, then put a capo on the remaining strings and went into Ani's "Untouchable Face", which she explained was the only song she knows that she can play with that particular broken string. :) (It took me a few lines to clue in to which song it was ... it was really cool.) Then it was time to change the string, and Julie Wolf sneaked onstage and started playing "The Rainbow Connection" as an interlude. Alison and Erin ran back out then to join in, and the entire audience started singing along. Melissa got her string changed and joined in to bring the tune to a rousing conclusion. It was hysterical. After we'd all recovered from this Melissa was solo again, and she did a bunch of older songs solo (including a couple from _Willing To Wait_, which is still my favorite album of hers after all these years). Erin joined her to play guitar and sing on "Anything, Anywhere", which was really cool. Then Alison and Julie joined them and they all did a bunch of new songs with the full band. (If the recording ends up even half as rocking as the versions we heard tonight, Melissa's next record is going to be an absolute corker.) Toward the end of the set Melissa broke another string, so we got another musical interlude ... none of us could figure out exactly what song it was, but we all remembered it from the 70s. (Plenty of folks in the audience seemed to know the words!) Again, it was hysterically funny. The set ended with a scorching version of "Drive" (god, that song is pure sex) and finally "Welcome To My Life". For an encore, Erin led everyone in a whimsical rendition of "Ring of Fire", complete with Melissa playing flugelhorn. :) All in all it was a great night, definitely one of the best shows I've seen in a long time. Alas it was the last night of this particular tour, but starting next week Kinnie Starr is replacing Erin on the tour in the Midwest. I wish I could get to one of those shows -- if Melissa and Kinnie are scheduled to come anywhere near you, *go*!!! - -- =============================================== Meredith Tarr New Haven, CT USA mailto:meth@smoe.org http://www.smoe.org/meth =============================================== hear at the HOMe House Concert Series http://hom.smoe.org =============================================== ------------------------------ End of ecto-digest V12 #93 **************************
