It's about creating "the story". The hard-working folks behind Sandi Thom, the team at Windswept Music Publishing, ( http://www.windsweptpacific.com/index.asp whose roster provides song material to Madonna, Carrie Underwood, Beyonce and many more), have crafted a plan that generates publicity - and gives the impression that a Scottish singer-songwriter, unconnected in the biz, has been discovered due to webcasts. That's not how it works, nor is that all there is to it. But, it's a good, promote-able, "story"" Hi, Adrian, Eager as I am to believe in any conspiracy theory (it would explain what is, to me, the inexplicable Cinderalla stories behind people like KT Tunstall and Kathryn Williams, with huge amounts of press being given to their albums weeks before they've even been released)but I can't seem to find a connection to Sandi Thom on Windswept's website. (I haven't even heard her stuff, so I'm not about to pass any of my ill-conceived judgment on that). I noticed, however, that one of the writers is Tonio K. Good grief, is that the same Tonio K who gave us the "Funky Western Civilization"? I loved that song! adam k. - ----------------------------------------------- This mail sent through http://webmail.zoom.co.uk ------------------------------ Date: Fri, 7 Apr 2006 02:20:37 -0700 From: "Allison Crowe Music Mgmt" Subject: Re: Sandi Thom/Windswept Hi! Well, it's not so much a conspiracy as it's smart PR - and typical music biz fare. The game is to put together the team and strategy, and build the story. In the case of Sandi Thom you can find her revealing on her MySpace page 2005 news: "Eventually, Windswept Pacific Music offered me a songwriting contract. I have been given the chance to work with a host of musicians and famous writers, in many places I didn't know existed. In May this year alone I have worked in Tennessee and Sweden." Also in May 2005, her website was launched by Summerhouse Graphic Design in Dorset. Then, one of Scotland's top design firms, bluesquare, created the site's visual identity ( http://www.blue2.co.uk/news/?id=1 ). And, then, she became a top PR priority for the folks at Quite Great Publicity: http://www.quitegreat.co.uk/index.html And, so it goes - the story builds with press releases that appeal to a post-Arctic Monkeys press environment. Despite the claims of massive (hundreds of thousands to over a million) worldwide viewings of a basement webcast the independent website traffic-tracker Alexa shows no such traffic http://www.alexa.com/data/details/?url=sandithom.com (the spikes coincide with the pr/stories) - and no commensurate surge in blogging activity is recorded by Technorati.com http://www.technorati.com/chart/sandi%20thom?chartdays=90&language=n&authority=a4 - (again, it can be seen that online discussion is spurred by news of the webcast, rather than the webcast itself). It's creative, classic, PR. It costs money, and takes know-how, but it works! As for Tonio K, I'll defer to your wisdom on "Funky Western Civilization" ( : cheers, Ad ------------------------------ Date: Fri, 7 Apr 2006 12:22:38 +0100 From: adamk@zoom.co.uk Subject: Re: Sandi Thom/Windswept Wow. I got one of those too, and I was also going to forward it on to Ecto, only to see that Neile (hi Neile!) beat me to it. I have NO idea how I got onto a Tibetan Arts Management mailing list. Did they cull the Ectophile's Guide I wonder? In any case, I've seen Yungchen Lhamo live and she's amazing...mesmerizing. I saw her for free at the Chicago Culteral Center, but if I had $25 (and, oh, if I lived in New York) I'd see her in a second. I saw her open for someone really famous (among music people of the right stripe anyway) and for the life of me I can't remember who. I only remember her, that's how much of an impact she made. Gigs are like buses, there's none for ages then all of a sudden loads come at once. I saw Depeche Mode on Monday, then next week it's Tina Dico and Fiona Apple. I've also got quite a few coming up including Cara Dillon, Nina Pallot, and The Cardigans but first.... It must be about 10 years since I last saw Jann Arden, as she rarely visits Europe. Next month she is touring Europe supporting Michael Buble and is coming to London for a one-off headlining show at Dingwalls, Camden Lock on Tuesday 16th May. I've already got my tickets, complete with extortionate booking fee courtesy of Ticketmaster. Don't miss it if you're nearby, she is absolutely fantastic live. Check out her official site http://www.jannarden.com Tina Dico is playing Dingwalls next Wednesday 12th April, complete with full band. She was brilliant in January, so I can't wait to see her again. Fiona Apple is playing the Apollo Theatre, Victoria next Tuesday 11th April. It's sold out but you can pick up tickets on eBay. I'm going as I'm not working after all.
