I feel gulity of a few of these myself..eww. But how could they miss "sonic cathedrals" and "ethereal"? Must not be Cocteau Twins fans then. I find the latest Kate album to be cinematic, hypnotic and obtuse myself. Anna Tired of spam? Yahoo! It's about creating "the story". The hard-working folks behind Sandi Thom, the team at Windswept Music Publishing, ( http://www.windsweptpacific.com/index.asp whose roster provides song material to Madonna, Carrie Underwood, Beyonce and many more), have crafted a plan that generates publicity - and gives the impression that a Scottish singer-songwriter, unconnected in the biz, has been discovered due to webcasts. That's not how it works, nor is that all there is to it. But, it's a good, promote-able, "story" Slainte, Adrian ------------------------------ Date: Thu, 6 Apr 2006 10:21:47 +0100 From: adamk@zoom.co.uk Subject: Sandi Thom I say "good for her" in that this is what she obviously wants and has been working towards, whether we agree with it or not. Sure, we know that what happens now is the usual two P's (processed & promoted)before more than likely being followed by the inevitable two D's (discounted and dumped). But, this is something she'll have to discover her own way and -- who knows? Maybe she'll get an album out of it, a la Aimee Mann. In the meantime, though, it's interesting that the major companies are becoming more aware of the net and the challenge that it presents. Sure, they can co-opt the odd webel, but that strategy can't last forever (unless I'm overestimating the intelligence of tomorrow's music-makers). Either way, Sandi's got the press and hopefully this will inspire more people to take this route, to a major label or not. In the meantime, I'm one happy bunny having just watched the entire 20 minute clip of Gabriel-era Genesis performing Supper's Ready. So, after 30 years of listening to this track, I now know what it looks like. adam k. - ----------------------------------------------- This mail sent through http://webmail.zoom.co.uk ------------------------------ Date: Thu, 06 Apr 2006 08:52:05 -0700 From: Nadyne Mielke Subject: Re: Charlotte Martin On 5/4/06 21:41, "Southpaw" wrote: > I just got home from seeing Charlotte Martin at a smaller club here in St. > Louis. We haven't announced this publicly yet, but the next issue of the Tori fanzine Little Blue World (which we're just about to ship off to the printers) includes an in-depth interview with Charlotte Martin. To get this issue, you can subscribe on our website at: http://www.little-blue-world.org/ The fanzine is also sold in Tower Records across the US, so you can pick up a single copy there. The issue should be in the hands of our subscribers and Tower in early May, so don't look for it too much before then. :) /nm - -- Nadyne Mielke nadyne@little-blue-world.org Little Blue World http://www.little-blue-world.org/ ------------------------------ Date: Thu, 06 Apr 2006 17:38:11 -0400 From: "JoAnn Whetsell" Subject: more from 2005 Thought I'd mention some other 2005 albums I just heard recently and haven't seen discussed on ecto. JoAnn Tracy Grammer - Flower of Avalonher 2nd solo album, though it's the first music i've ever heard from her. light, slightly sad, often sweet country-tinged folk songs. very good. Liz Phair - Somebody's Miraclesomewhere in between her last self-titled album and her earlier work. fairly mainstream rock, but it dispenses with the overly slick pop production of the last album and comes out sounding more authentic. i like it quite a bit. Over the Rhine - Drunkard's Prayera spare and deceptively simple album with a very modest and homegrown feel (it was actually recorded in karin & linford's living room). there's an intimacy here and closeness that make the album feel close, particularly the first 2 songs which are especially beautiful. simplicity not just in the arrangements but in the lyrics, there's a lot of repetition. the rest of the album is darker. highly recommended Missy Higgins - All for Believing EP5 new songs, great piano better-than-pop Erin McKeown - We Will Become Like Birdsby far her best album yet. i don't know quite how to describe it, except to say (rather bluntly) that it has all of the stuff i like about erin mckeown and none of the stuff that annoys me. Varttina - - MieroVarttina continues to make great music. Their latest, Miero, combines the light and fresh sounds of iki with the darker sound of Ilmatar. A great album. ------------------------------ End of ecto-digest V12 #90 **************************
