Meet meth and woj and Rachael Sage Saturday! I just got back in town after being gone for two weeks. Rachael Sage is going to be playing Schubas on Saturday night, and long-time Ectophiles meth and woj will be at the show! If you've ever wanted to meet these fine folks (again, or for the first time), now's your chance! The show is an early one, 7:00pm (there's a later show with another band). Greg Sorrell opens. Dean Sharp, who's played drums with Happy and Jane Siberry, will be with Rachael. I don't think I'll be be able to come (*much wailing and gnashing of teeth*), so if anyone goes, please post how it went. Well, that's silly, of course it will go wonderfully, so post how wonderful it went. Just a reminder to you and everyone who buys from iTunes: Be sure to export your tracks to a standard AIFF CD. It strips off the DRM. Then set your preferences so instead of AAC, it imports music into MP3 at 256 (choose Other from the popup under Advanced -> Importing). This doesn't affect your ITMS purchases, but it does any CDs you import. Then re-import your purchased tracks. Presto, now they can be played on any MP3 player, and you won't have to worry about losing all your protected music to a dead hard drive. Mac users: You might want to acquire a copy of Senuti, and iPodDisk. These two programs have differing ways of copying music off of an iPod onto your computer. Legal use: Suppose your drive dies and all you have is on your Pod. Without one of these apps, you can't re-import into iTunes. Other uses: obvious. It strips off the DRM. the need for this is debatable and depends on how you plan on using the music. If you only play it on the computer or ipod, there's no reason to export to a standard CD; backing it up (which is of the utmost importance) will suffice. Unless you need to play the music elsewhere (e.g. your car, on a standard CD player), you have no need for a CD of the music. > Then set your preferences so instead of AAC, it imports music into MP3 at > 256 (choose Other from the popup under Advanced -> Importing). This > doesn't affect your ITMS purchases, but it does any CDs you import. > Then re-import your purchased tracks. Um, why? Even ignoring the reasons for not converting to MP3 listed above, why on earth would you take the lossy 128bit AAC and resample it into a much larger file which is likely to not only keep any flaws introduced through AAC encoding but introduce more through conversion to a different lossy format? Don't get me wrong: I'm no fan of DRM. I won't buy DRM'd faux CDs and I virtually never buy music over iTunes. But this advice strikes me as meaningless overkill. > and you won't have to worry about losing all your protected music to a dead hard drive. That's what a backup is for; converting to MP3 doesn't need to be a part of a proper backup regimen! jeff (who, really, isn't trying to be contentious!) n.p. _Aerial: A Sky of Honey_, KaTe n.r. _Jack Maggs_, Peter Carey ------------------------------ Date: Thu, 30 Mar 2006 13:50:44 -0800 (PST) From: "Xenu's Sister" Subject: Re: Chicago Ectophiles! Thanks. i've got to belatedly second that - nexus is great. the lyrics seem a bit weak in places (though honestly i haven't paid a lot of attention) but the music and the general feel of it are wonderful... quite dreamy and dark with a great groove. her earlier two are less even to my ear, but also good. all quite different, and getting progressively mellower (from not very mellow at all through semi-mellow to the wonderfully mellow of nexus). all available (with samples of all or almost all tracks, which is nice!) on cdbaby. in concert with charlotte martin (whom i like as well) - that would be a great show. too bad someone hasn't invented teleporters yet. - -damon - -- dl+ecto@usrbin.ca: protecting my real address since 2002 (too late!) > EWS starts here! < ------------------------------ End of ecto-digest V12 #83 **************************
