Wouldn't they > be demanding FLAC or some lossless format? Well, put MP3 and excessive compression together and it may in fact have something to do with low CD sales. Not as the cause but as the symptom. Both things display that music nowadays is regarded as consumable, some superficial entertainment. *Listening* to music takes time and if more people were in fact listening, then they would soon be tired of MP3 and excessive compression. But on the contrary, it's a success, which in turn could be interpreted that the reception of music has changed, because one is not listening but just getting easily access to some amusement for bridging some dead time, when sitting in the bus, being on work, driving in the car (btw: if people were listening, car Hifi systems couldn't be a success and in fact many of the modern compression schemes were requested by radio stations for improving the sound impression in cars, where you can't tolerate too much dynamic range due to the high noise level) and numerous other places which are not suitable for listening to music. Assumed this changed attitude towards music is correct, then why should you spend money on CDs? You aren't anyway interested in the artists and their music, but just in a bit of entertainment which can be downloaded from the internet or exchanged with you friends: "Well, here I've got some awesome *tracks* " Q:"Who is playing?", A: "Don't know and don't care but they sound really great." Yes it's a belated discvery..but Martha Wainwright's debut is stunning. Her vocals sound like Mary Margaret O'Hara at times. It's a very ecto if a tad angry album. Yes, I'm referring to the imfamous "BMFA". A powerful track about her dad to say the least. Great stuff. The she will have her way tribute to the finn brothers is great too..various austrilian female artist get to grips with the songs..Sarah Blasko's Donr dream it's over and natalie Imrbuglia's Pineapple Head i liked best. I've spent most of the past two weeks on college campuses, and the thing that really surprised me was how many students have those tell-tale white cables. In one case, two girls were walking along with their iPod earbuds in and talking. (It is possible that they weren't listening to the music; I found it odd nonetheless.) After that sight, I was immensely relieved that the students in the class that I was lecturing to that night didn't have any iPod paraphernalia visible. For that matter, I got rather cranky when I noticed that one of the TSA agents at the Rochester, NY, airport was also listening to her iPod. If you're going to violate my Fourth Amendment rights, can't you at least have the decency to give such violations all of your attention? /nm - -- Nadyne Mielke nadyne@little-blue-world.org Little Blue World http://www.little-blue-world.org/ ------------------------------ End of ecto-digest V12 #75 **************************
