If such subtle qualities mattered to the average listener, wouldn't MP3 sales be in the dumpster as well? Wouldn't they be demanding FLAC or some lossless format? I think it has more to do with lousy music than production values. :) - -- Scott - -- Scott Andrew Lo-fi acoustic pop superhero! http://www.scottandrew.com scott@scottandrew.com Join the Demo Club to unlock new MP3s, discounts, tour dates and other neato stuff: http://www.scottandrew.com/democlub ------------------------------ Date: Sat, 18 Mar 2006 13:33:07 -0500 From: Jeff Wasilko Subject: like portishead? check out cabiria There's a new Boston band called Cabiria, and they sound a lot (and I mean alot) like Portishead. I've seen them twice (once opening for Fluttr Effect and last night as a headliner). The band is part made up of Berklee folks (Valerie Brinker on vocals and the guitarist). The violin player (Erin McFee) isn't from Berklee, but is amazing! http://www.cabiriamusic.com/ ------------------------------ Date: Sat, 18 Mar 2006 13:40:46 -0500 From: Jeff Wasilko Subject: good earplugs A friend of mine suggested the earplugs that Etyomtic makes (they also make really good sealed earphones). I tried them out last night, and they're amazing. Unlike normal cheap foam earplugs, these have a flat frequency response. I always hated wearing earplugs since (for me anyway), they dropped too much of the vocal range and made it hard to hear lyrics. They're $12.95 a set, or $10/ea for 5 or more if you order via phone (buy some extras!): http://etymotic.com/ephp/er20.aspx If you go to live shows, you reallt should pick up a set. ------------------------------ Date: Sat, 18 Mar 2006 13:58:34 -0500 From: Jeff Wasilko Subject: shows in Montreal? I'm going to be in Montreal April 28-30, and was wondering who on ecto is still around Montreal? Any suggestions for interesting shows that weekend? - -j ------------------------------ Date: Sun, 19 Mar 2006 04:41:27 +0100 From: Kjetil Torgrim Homme Subject: Re: Interesting article [andrew fries]: > > Notice this article only seems to talk about mainstream music, > radio-friendly formats and Grammy nominations. Poe's "Haunted", which I frequently lament as butchered dynamicswise, has a value of -8.05. it has very noticable clipping, but it's still on my all-time Top 10. the most subdued album at +4.60 is a sampler from Deutsche Gramophon which showcased their 4D mastering technology (back when DDD was a selling point, they introduced the fourth D by doing the digitisation out in the microphone). Rvyksopp has a surprise showing at +4.49 with the bonus CD off "Melody A.M.", but the album itself is at the opposite end of the scale at -5.56. the dubious honour of being the loudest album in my collection befalls Anastacia's "Freak of Nature". (removing all mainstream albums from the statistics is a hard problem, but I don't think my collection is less ectoish than most here :-) - -- Kjetil T. ------------------------------ End of ecto-digest V12 #73 **************************
