It's either that or continue to suffer the wrath of my family. Do a search for "Disckeeper". Clear(ish) plastic sleeves that hold CD and booklet, with a look reminiscent of rice paper. Cheaper than the binders, easier to keep alphabetized when adding new discs to your collection. Also nicer than the paper ones as you can see the whole booklet through the poly sleeve. The iVoice for the iPod (or the similar Belkin model of same accessory). Googling "ipod recorder" brings up a comprehensive list. I don't have personal experience with this device myself, but I know some musicians who swear by it in a pinch. And I've heard it makes decent concert recordings as well, so I would expect it would be fine for recording lectures. Apparently saving to the computer is as easy as connecting the iPod to iTunes. The video recorder part of the camera has an audio option which gives me 3 hours of audio recording which can then be downloaded to the computer or played from the camera. Wow, the country is so clean and together that I may want to emigrate.... Wendy was great, what a friend and co-artist, she set up the greatest tour for Land of the Blind we've ever done, she rocks and we had such fun together, performing songs together and traveling all over in a mad dash (it was like trying to fly into US and play Seattle, drive to San Francisco then San Diego then Austin then New York City....ha ha)....More later on the tour but I noticed someone asking about Ectofest 99...and since I performed there with Happy, I think I remember that Bill Mazor taped the whole thing cause if I remember right, he gave me a copy of it. I don't have it, as I have moved 5 times since then...I could be wrong but I think so. So try Bill, he knows everything. Hope everyone on list is healthy and happy! peace, Cyoakha Grace ------------------------------ Date: Thu, 09 Mar 2006 14:39:42 -0500 From: "JoAnn Whetsell" Subject: the comfort of beth Surprised I haven't heard more about Beth Orton's new album, The Comfort of Strangers. It's a beautiful album, rootsy and mellow. The trip-hop and electronica are gone, but what's left is a kind of soulful rock-tinged folk. There are 2 versions, 1 with a 5 song bonus disc, which is also good, the first 2 songs especially. There's a nice review/interview at http://www.msnbc.msn.com/id/11396646/site/newsweek/ JoAnn ------------------------------ Date: Thu, 9 Mar 2006 14:03:25 -0600 From: Doug Subject: Re: the comfort of beth I hate to say it but the only Beth I've found that I like is her Central Reservation release. "Mary" in particular displays the awesome power her voice has, making me suspect for the longest time that she was some large woman in her late 30s (think Wendy Rule), rather than the comparatively young wisp of a girl that she is. Anyway, pretty much at the last minute I discovered that she was playing at Schuba's last night, opening for Tina Dico, and so I made my way there for what will probably turn out to be one of the best shows I'll see all year. And that despite her opening number, "Bittersweet" (from her new, online-only for the moment because of her record company being stupid, album "Real") sounding awfully poppy and loud, containing neither the power nor the beauty that I was expecting. Luckily she took away all my doubts with her second song (which mesmerized me to such a degree that I completely forgot to pay attention to what it was called), and kept going strong from there, with "Mary" and "Lay Down Your Light" in particular being highlights of the evening. Sitting on stage all by herself behind her keyboard (other than for the two songs she played on her guitar), she quietly sipped a cup of tea between songs, and even though her Mac provided most of the sound - including a somewhat mechanical beat - it was her voice and her keyboard that totally dominated the room. This evening also was the first time I've ever seen an opening act get such unending applause that she had no choice but to ask if she would have time for an encore, which was Joni Mitchell's "Blue", vocals only. Gorgeous. I hung around for four of Tina Dico's songs, but although they sounded not at all bad, they also didn't manage to grab me (I guess I just prefer "chick with keyboard" over "chick with guitar") :) - and thus, with the hour growing late (why do they start at 9 on a weekday anyway? - - though I guess that if they hadn't, I wouldn't have made it there for Kristin, so I'm not complaining), I headed out again. Not much of a recommendation that, but I still think a lot of people here would like her music. http://www.tinadico.com/music/in_the_red/in_the_red_2006/ has samples if you're flash enabled or not afraid of digging up the real urls to the sample mp3's in the page's source, and otherwise cdbaby has samples from one of her EPs: http://cdbaby.com/cd/tinadico The two of them will be heading to the west coast next (San Diego - Mar 19, LA - Mar 20, San Francisco - Mar 22, Seattle - Mar 23 and Vancouver - - Mar 24), so if you're in the neighbourhood, I'd dare say at least one of the two will manage to turn you into a fan. :) Cheers, Sander ------------------------------ Date: Thu, 09 Mar 2006 21:05:08 -0500 From: meredith Subject: Goldfrapp, _Supernature_ Hi, To all those wishing there were more Danielle Dax tunes out there in the universe ... run, don't walk to your nearest CD sales emporium and pick up Goldfrapp's latest, _Supernature_. I realize I may be on crack, but to me this record sounds just like Danielle Dax. And I mean that as a very, very good thing. (I liked Goldfrapp before as well ... but this is different, edgier, and I never thought of Dax when hearing Goldfrapp before this.) I hear there's also a gorgeous new video for the single (which I think is "Ride A White Horse", maybe?) showing in the middle of the night on VH1, but I haven't seen it yet myself... - -- =============================================== Meredith Tarr New Haven, CT USA mailto:meth@smoe.org http://www.smoe.org/meth =============================================== hear at the HOMe House Concert Series http://hom.smoe.org =============================================== ------------------------------ Date: Thu, 9 Mar 2006 20:01:11 -0800 (PST) From: James Gurley Subject: Re: Duets Just wanted to pop out of obscurity for a moment to let folks know that on iTunes there's two downloadable tracks from a Nick Drake tribute album by none other than Veda Hille and Robin Holcomb. - -J ------------------------------ End of ecto-digest V12 #64 **************************
