They're definitely still around. The Natasha Bishop Agency is allegedly booking them. http://www.natashabishop.com/ Paul (not a fan myself) shad 96c / uw cs 2001 / mac activist / fumbler / eda / headliner / navy-souper fan of / sophie b. / steve poltz / habs / bills / 49ers / "This book is not to be tossed lightly aside, but to be hurled with great force." -- Dorothy Parker [demime 0.97c-p1 removed an attachment of type application/pkcs7-signature which had a name of smime.p7s] ------------------------------ Date: Thu, 2 Mar 2006 05:47:23 -0800 (PST) From: "Xenu's Sister" Subject: Re: Two Loons For Tea (and Kansas City Ectophiles?) (and Charlotte Martin) (and movies) Two Loons For Tea have a MySpace page at http://www.myspace.com/twoloonsfortea and according to that they're playing two upcoming dates, one in Austin, TX on March 17, and one in Seattle on March 24. I've actually gotten personal correspondence from Jonathan Kochmer when I requested an add for Happy. The last login was yesterday, so they keep up there more than the web site. Kansas City Ectophiles who want to have a stompin' good time should go to Barley's Brewhaus in Overland Park (119th & Quivera) this Saturday night and see The Rev. Peyton's Big Damn Band! They're a crackin' nice bunch of young whippersnapper liberals who play the down-lowest, down-homest, rootsiest roots dance music you'll ever hear, and I do mean dance. If you don't at the very least tap your toes or at the most get up and thrash, you're most likely dead. You can hear what they sound like on MySpace: http://www.myspace.com/therevpeytonsbigdamnband I've been in contact with the Rev and his very cool wife Breezy since I first discovered them on MySpace. The Rev sings with a voice channeled from the hollar of a 50-year old bluesman, and plays brilliant slide guitar to boot. His awesome wife Breezy plays the washboard, and his brother Jayme plays the drums. It's just those 3, yet it sometimes sounds like there's 20 people on stage. I really, really like these guys, both for their fun music, and because they're nice people. We saw them in Chicago and had a blast, even though there were hardly any people there. My guy Chris knew someone in Kansas City who specializes in booking blues and rock acts, passed along their name, and she got them this Saturday night gig, their first time in Kansas City (they're from Indianapolis). Chris and I will be there, though I might come off as anti-social because I still can't really talk. A wave, a smile and a hug will have to do. Doors open at 8 and the show is supposed to start at 9. This is far from "ecto music" but it's really good Saturday Night Have A Good Time music that this Ectophile loves. It's also possible that the band will be going back to the booker's house afterward to jam, and we'll be there for that too. I could probably get ectophiles an invite to that too. Charlotte Martin is on tour yet again, and we have tickets to her Chicago show at the Double Door on the 9th. I hate the Double Door, but it is a bit of a step up in terms of space, since it's much bigger than Schubas. We've seen Kirsty MacColl, Holly Cole, Anna Domino (Snake Farm), Lisa Germano, Beth Orton, Tara MacLean and Dido there, among others I can't remember. Its biggest problem is that it's a bar with loud patrons standing in the back, certain that their loud conversation is much more important than the onstage entertainment. But, I've requested she cover Happy again, and you never know, so I'll be there. Well, I'd be there even if I knew in advance she wasn't going to cover Happy. I very much heart Charlotte and will never miss her if I can help it! I'm looking forward to the Academy Awards Sunday! There's not a movie nominated that I haven't seen (well, except in the Foreign and Documentary categories), and didn't at the very least really like, and there's so many I outright loved. That just doesn't happen very often. I'm rooting for Brokeback (Picture), Ang Lee (Director), Philip Seymour Hoffman (Actor), Felicity Huffman (Actress), George Clooney/Amy Adams (Supporting), and Brokeback/Good Night, and Good Luck (Screenplay). I don't think those will all win, they're just what I'm rooting for. The beauty is, except for Best Picture, I'll be thrilled for just about any other winner. For instance, Syriana was a favorite movie, so that's why I'm rooting for George, but if Jake won, I'd be standing up cheering. Brokeback and Munich were my favorite films from last year, so I'm only rooting for those. I really do not want Crash to win BP, but I still liked it. Except for short-changing The New World, The Constant Gardener, A History of Violence and Eric Bana, the Academy did very well for itself in this year's nominations. I couldn't be happier or looking more forward to an Oscar (except 2004, when Return of the King had that wonderful sweep). And Jon Stewart is hosting. Color me somewhere up in heaven. Then I realized it's the same date that my friend Victoria is coming to town, and she asked me to play cello with her at Genghis Cohen. Carina at 9 PM, Victoria at 10 PM. Hmmm. Then I saw Jason's post, and got confused. Because it lists Carina as playing at the Hotel and at Cinespace both on 3/9 which doesn't make sense since that's when she kicks off the tour in NYC. Clicking over to her tourdates page, it all becomes clear. Carina is actually doing THREE shows in L.A. Monday the 20th at the Viper Room, Tuesday the 21st at Cinespace, and Wednesday at the Hotel Cafe. So I no longer have a conflict. Woot! A bunch of really good shows happening this month in L.A. New Jersey-ite Jenny Owens Young is doing a residency at the Hotel (and going to SxSW with the Hotel Cafe)...she's an avowed fan of Erin McKeown and is basically like a version of Erin if she grew up listening to Liz Phair. Also coming up at the Hotel are Catherine Feeny, Anne McCue, Maria McKee (!), Ane Brun, Kate Earl, Tina Dico, Kat Parsons, and more. Whew. Other dates have Holly Palmer at Tangier in Los Feliz, Rachael Sage at Genghis Cohen, Snow Patrol with Gemma Hayes...um...Neko Case... Christine Fellows was on the schedule with Carolyn Mark for a show at the Mint on Tuesday, but that ended up being an erroneous listing, as Christine confirmed that they were only going as far west as Tucson on this tour. Sadness ensued. Paulkim ------------------------------ Date: Thu, 02 Mar 2006 19:46:42 -0500 From: meredith Subject: Re: Two Loons For Tea (and Kansas City Ectophiles?) Oh cool, they're going to be at SXSW!! Hopefully I can see them. I know I'm going to be spending the two weeks following SXSW repeatedly finding out about stuff I missed and going "d'oh!!!" ... sigh. - -- =============================================== Meredith Tarr New Haven, CT USA mailto:meth@smoe.org http://www.smoe.org/meth =============================================== hear at the HOMe House Concert Series http://hom.smoe.org =============================================== ------------------------------ Date: Thu, 2 Mar 2006 23:55:11 -0500 From: wojizzle forizzle Subject: liz fraser and jeff buckley sitting in a tree... did anyone else notice that a mp3 of a demo that liz fraser and jeff buckley recorded was posted on cocteautwins.com? the song is "all flowers in time (turn towards the sun)" and it's really quite lovely. i'd seen the mp3 turn up on various mp3blawgs in the past few weeks and finally thought to see if there was some legit source for it and lo! it actually came from the official site: http://www.cocteautwins.com/html/news.html apparently, they recorded more material together as well and that may surface someday in a subscription cd series put together by jeff's mother, mary guibert. i guess i hadn't been paying attention since all of this news to me! although, i do seem to recall hearing some sturm und drang about her involvement in her son's song archeology.... anyway. on an unrelated note, meredith and i keep forgetting to mention that susan werner has recorded a new song, "my strange nation", and has released it for free on her website. there's both a mp3 and an aiff file of the song for download. it's her take on the turn the united states has taken in the past few years and has been a big hit at her concerts for the past year. check it out at http://www.susanwerner.com/. woj n.p. the colbert report ------------------------------ End of ecto-digest V12 #58 **************************
