For those in ectoworld who don't know who Paul Kim is, watch Imogen Heap on Carson Daly. Paul is visible on night #1, but the real money shot is on night #2. During the first chorus of "Say Goodnight And Go", Paul is the bespectacled Asian dude shown in a lingering audience shot grooving like there's no tomorrow. There are a couple more shots of this phenomenon later on in the performance, but that first one is the best. The camera liked you, Paul!! *g* Oh yeah, and Immi was pretty damned good, too. :) - -- =============================================== Meredith Tarr New Haven, CT USA mailto:meth@smoe.org http://www.smoe.org/meth =============================================== hear at the HOMe House Concert Series http://hom.smoe.org =============================================== ------------------------------ Date: Thu, 2 Feb 2006 03:00:03 -0500 (EST) From: Mike Matthews Subject: Today's your birthday, friends... i*i*i*i*i*i i*i*i*i*i*i *************** *****HAPPY********* **************BIRTHDAY********* *************************************************** *************************************************************************** ******************* Bob Lovejoy (rlovejoy@comcast.net) ******************** ********************* Diane Burke (no Email address) ********************** *************************************************************************** -=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=- - -=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=- Bob Lovejoy Sun February 02 1947 Aquarius Diane Burke Sat February 02 1963 slow children Timothy S. Blackthorn: Irish Love Songs is set to be released March 14 on Harmonia Mundi's World Village label. Susan is slated for at least a small promotional tour. Oddly enough, the Blackthorn tour kicks off in Albuquerque on March 24! (I didn't have anything to do with that.) Look for late March dates in Seattle, Portland and Eugene, and April at NYU. The CD's got the usual World Village lovely packaging, though the type in the incredibly wordy book is on the small side! It's Susan in trad mode, with some of the songs being hundreds of years old. The vast majority of the songs are sung in Gaelic, and the arrangements are often quite sparse. One interesting angle are the couple of songs that she works on with musicians from Northern Spain (Asturias and Basque regions). They have very different arrangements and unique instruments. ======== On a different note, I have only recently discovered Shannon McNally's CD Geronimo. Wow! Killer songs, cool country-blues vocals. Really strong. Any ectofolk going to Folk Alliance in Austin next week? Jeff and I will be there, and I know Meredith and Rachael Sage will too. Jess? Carolyn? Are there any ectophiles in Austin these days? neal nr: The Emmigrants - W. G. Sebald np: la maison de mon reve - cocorosie (Pretty odd. Yes, I was a victim of EWS for quite awhile, sometimes spending $300 in one shopping trip, and ending up with 2,500 CDs. I'm somewhat cured now, but I'm still very much interested in learning about new artists and recordings. The reason I've rejoined is that I would like to make a mix CD for a friend and would like suggestions for songs about affairs. With the help of Google, I found some ideas, but most of them were older music (the Beatles' "Norwegian Wood" was mentioned many times), and I'm looking for more contemporary tunes. Anyway, I'm happy (as opposed to Happy herself) to be back on ecto and hope y'all can point me toward some good ideas for the mix CD. And does anyone know if Happy is planning anything to follow "Many Worlds Are Born Tonight"? Thanks for listening . . . Jill R. Oooh. Ow. :) The first song that popped to mind was one that admittedly you probably don't have: it's on the Charming Hostess album _Punch_, "Torso". "Marriage is a sacrament, but we can still be friends. Marriage is a sacrament, I gave it up for Lent. Marriage is a sacrament, but I can still be spent." Perhaps more easily accessible is "Fountain of Youth" by The Nields, on _Gotta Get Over Greta_. "It unraveled last night, I dreamed of your wife I dream of her often We were sitting at a table just like this Talking of you, as usual 'Will he ever grow up and raise a family?' she asks And I wonder, 'then who are those goddamn kids in the photographs? What kind of a father figure refuses to grow up?' " ... of course, if by "affairs" you mean "fancy parties", then disregard the above. :) > And does anyone know if Happy is planning anything to follow "Many Worlds > Are Born Tonight"? She has something just about ready to go, she just needs funds to make it into CDs. Hopefully soon! yeah, I've been thinking about this a lot lately...especially when one of the new songs cycles onto my ipod. it's particularly depressing to hear her talking about "the new album" in her intro to...um, I think it's "Can't Let Go"...when she talks about it being a new song and that she expects it to be out, "later this year." That was almost 3 years ago. What I can't figure out is, if it's a money issue, why Happy doesn't go the Patron of the Arts route and get people (read: ectophiles) to finance the rest of it... Lots of ectophilic artists have done this over the years (a few springing to mind include Ingrid Karklins (_Red Hand_, anyone?), Magdalen Hsu-Li, Girlyman, Holly Figueroa). Some of 'em have incentives like a shout out in the liner notes, early releases of the disc, multiple copies of the disc, etc. C'mon, Happy, let us *help*! jeff n.p. _Flown this Acid World_, Peter Himmelman ------------------------------ Date: Thu, 02 Feb 2006 20:31:59 +0000 From: jjhanson@att.net Subject: Re: suggestions for mix cd -- affairs Why'd Ya Do It by Marianne Faithfull is a great, if a bit vulgar, affair song.... Lyrics--- When I stole a twig from our little nest And gave it to a bird with nothing in her beak, I had my balls and my brains put into a vice And twisted around for a whole fucking week. Why'd ya do it, she said, why'd you let that trash Get a hold of your cock, get stoned on my hash ? Why'd ya do it she said, why'd you let her suck your cock ? Oh, do me a favour, don't put me in the dock. Why'd ya do it, she said, they're mine all your tools, You just tied me to the mast of the ship of fools. Why'd ya do it, she said, when you know it makes me sore, 'Cause she had cobwebs up her fanny and I believe in giving to the poor. Why'd ya do it, she said, why'd you spit on my snatch ? Are we out of love now, is this just a bad patch ? Why'd ya do it, she said, why'd you do what you did ? You drove my ego to a really bad skid. Why'd you do it, she said, ain't nothing to laugh, You just tore all our kisses right in half! Why'd ya do it, she said, why'd ya do what you did, Betray my little oyster for such a low bid. Why'd ya do it, she said, why'd you do what you did ? You drove my ego to a really bad skid. Why'd ya do it, she screamed, after all we've said Every time I see your dick I see her cunt in my bed. The whole room was swirling, Her lips were still curling. Why'd ya do it, she said, why'd you do what you did Why'd ya do it, she said, why'd you do what you did Why'd ya do it, she said, why'd ya do it, she said, Why'd you do what you did ? Oh, big grey mother, I love you forever With your barbed wire pussy and your good and bad weather. Why'd ya do it, she said, why'd you do what you did ... I'll Follow You Tonight ======================= Caught by what comes by Stand alone without a fair chance tonight Here again by your side when They turn on all the lights Yes I'll follow you tonight Using white lies if we have to It's easy to forgive and forget it all tomorrow I just pass by you, pass by me My last way out and worst mistake tonight Lying lips won't say my eyes give me away Won't you please turn out the light And I'll follow you tonight I'll follow you tonight The worst mistake to make Or just the kind of promise you simply have to break So please turn out the lights And I'll follow you To any doorstep, any hallway With hope of finding more Not feel shallow not get bored And find it useless, feeling meaningless And just as low as I was high the night before The worst mistake to make Or just the kind of promise you simply have to break So please turn out the light And I'll follow you tonight... Anna Ternheim is easily my favourite new artist of last year, though it was a *very* good year. - -- Kjetil T. ------------------------------ Date: Thu, 2 Feb 2006 18:27:30 -0600 From: Josh Burnett Subject: Re: suggestions for mix cd -- affairs On Feb 2, 2006, at 7:40 AM, Jill Hughes wrote: > The reason I've rejoined is that I would like to make a mix CD for a > friend > and would like suggestions for songs about affairs. One that comes to mind for me is "Does He Love You?" by Rilo Kiley: Late at night, I get the phone. You're at the shop sobbing all alone. Your confession, it's coming out. You only married him because you felt your time was running out. Now you love him, and your baby. At last, you are complete. But he's distant and you found him on the phone pleading, saying 'Baby I love you and I'll leave her and I'm coming out to California...' Let's not forget ourselves, good friend. I am flawed if I'm not free. Your husband will never leave you, he will never leave you for me. (complete lyrics here: http://www.rilokiley.net/lyrics/doesheloveyou.php) "Mr. Harris" by Aimee Mann also comes to mind - it's a older man/younger woman story, though now that I think of it, I don't think either of the characters were married. I suppose there must be some stories of affairs on the Magnetic Fields' _69 Love Longs_, but I can't think of any off the top of my head. josh. ------------------------------ End of ecto-digest V12 #32 **************************
