More about the show later when I'm not falling asleep, but executive summary: Immi good. Very, very, very good. Everyone must go see -- even if it's sold out go anyway, you'll be able to get a ticket at the door I'm sure. And if Zoe Keating is opening, be sure to get there in time to see her, too (she's most recently been in Rasputina, and is joining Immi for a few songs during the main set as well). - -- =============================================== Meredith Tarr New Haven, CT USA mailto:meth@smoe.org http://www.smoe.org/meth =============================================== hear at the HOMe House Concert Series http://hom.smoe.org =============================================== ------------------------------ Date: Thu, 12 Jan 2006 00:26:34 -0800 (PST) From: anna maria "stjärnell" Subject: brokeback Hi. Yes, me too. I prefer those to happy ever after ones oddly. It seems this film will appeal to me. I loved other films of a simliar ilk if there is one. I realise I haven't always had the most ecto of tastes on this list, but... I have a resistence to hype, and for me the film critic I read the most -- in the Guardian -- has recently cheapened his currency by giving 5/5 stars to King Kong (more on that later) but the whole subject of the film, from the reviews I read, intrigued me. When I did see it, I loved it: I thought Heath Ledger, in particular, was a revelation, even if I didn't understand what he said some of the time. Great performances, great scenery and an unsensational way of telling a story. Mind you, the night before I'd finally caught up with Titanic, so I was in the mood for something a bit more understated. Which brings me to: Why do people feel they have to make three hour long films to tell a simple story, that has been told before, stuffed with CGI and why, with all that money and running time: (in Cameron's case:) resort to sentimentality, anachronistic behaviour or cheap national stereotypes or (in Jackson's case) fall prey to gaps in logic, leaps in reason and black holes of motivation? I saw both these films within two weeks of each other, so after all that bloated FX-heavy excess, Brokeback Mountain was truly a breath of fresh air. Lovely music, too... adam k. - ----------------------------------------------- This mail sent through http://webmail.zoom.co.uk ------------------------------ Date: Thu, 12 Jan 2006 10:04:46 -0500 From: wojizzle forizzle Subject: imogen heap / avalon, nyc imogen heap january 11, 2006 avalon new york city just for now / let go / candlelight / goodnight and go / loose ends / the walk / clear the area / headlock / can't take it in / hide and seek / have you got it in you / sleep / encore: it's good to be in love / the moment i said it despite, or perhaps in part because of, a slew of technical problems, last night's show at avalon (the first time i've been to the "rock'n'roll church" in almost 13 years!) was a whole lot of fun. imogen was is great spirits just being in new york and having just taped her appearance on late night with david letterman and was quite pleased with how all that had worked out -- new gear, extra publicity, david's sincere apology. of course, new gear means bugs in the system (i guess they wisely decided to use the old setup for the letterman appearance since that's probably a little more important than even a gig in new york city) and they were a challenge to imogen's resolve but she weathered the storm and all worked out. while i understand a performer's desire for things to be perfect, it's these little problems and quirks that supportive audiences seem to enjoy which help to make a show unique and memorable -- i don't think all performers understand this, but imogen seemed somewhat clued in since she graciousl zoe keating, currently the second cellist in rasputina, opened. she played a short set -- four songs i think -- of looped, instrumental pieces. tasty stuff. the audience seemed kind of put off by her at first but most of them warmed up by the end. she's quite good and worth arriving early for if anyone is going to any of the other shows on the tour. after a break, imogen began with the first three songs at the piano, which was set up in the middle of the stage. after finishing "let go", kumar, her tech, who became a constant presence during the show, came out and fixed up her "innies" -- in-ear monitors -- before she did "candlelight", from _i megaphone_. i never really liked the first record that much, but having heard a few of the older songs last night and also at the canal room last october, i think i may like that record more now. after that, she went over to the keyboard/gear rack for the next bunch of songs. she muffed up the lyrics on "goodnight and go" (whoops!) and "loose ends" seemed a little tenative but she pulled it all together for "the walk" and "clear the area". the latter was particularly amusing since some guy in the audience sang the backing lines in the chorus which threw her a little but she recovered and, after finishing the song, said that she always hoped that the audience would harmonize with her on that song and instructed us so, all in all, quite worthwhile! if anyone missed the letterman appearance, you can watch it at: http://www.youtube.com/w/imogen-heap-on-letterman?v=jn6AigJxTCc&search=imogen%20heap woj ------------------------------ Date: Thu, 12 Jan 2006 09:13:23 -0800 (PST) From: Ellen Rawson Subject: Re: Brokeback - --- adamk@zoom.co.uk wrote: > > I have a resistence to hype, and for me the film > critic I read the most -- in > the Guardian -- has recently cheapened his currency > by giving 5/5 stars to King > Kong (more on that later) but the whole subject of > the film, from the reviews I > read, intrigued me. Same here, and I share the same opinion regarding that particular King Kong review. I'd also heard Radio 5Live's movie critics last Friday afternoon singing the praises of 'Brokeback'; those reviewers tend to be picky. They loved it. When I did see it, I loved it: > I thought Heath Ledger, in > particular, was a revelation, even if I didn't > understand what he said some of > the time. My husband is with you. He said that he grew better at understanding him later, but Ledger was almost speaking another language at the start. Actually, the 5Live critics discussed that topic after they played an audio clip. They contended that when you saw him, you could 'get' it. I even had a problem at first, and I lived in Colorado (just under two hours from the Wyoming border, and I've spent time in Wyoming). However, I understood him quickly. I must agree with the 5Live critic who said that this is Ledger's breakaway film. Indeed. He's no longer just the pretty boy. Great performances, great scenery and an > unsensational way of > telling a story. Although I agree the scenery was beautiful, I am a wee bit regretful that Alberta stood in for Wyoming. Mind you all, it's nothing against Alberta, and I do understand that filming in Canada tends to be simpler and cheaper. However, I've been to Riverton, Wyoming. I saw both these films within two weeks > of each other, so after > all that bloated FX-heavy excess, Brokeback Mountain > was truly a breath of > fresh air. For me, it wasn't the bloated FX-heavy excess that made me abhor Titanic; it was the poorly written script and Leonardo DiCrapio, er DiCaprio lack of acting skills. (Sorry. A former student got me into the habit of saying DiCrapio. ;) But I agree. A good story, good acting and good directing -- that's all we really need. > > Lovely music, too... The choice of the Willie Nelson number at the end -- very understated -- was just lovely, in particular. This film deserves all of its many nominations, and it deserves to win the awards also.
