It would be a good idea that I would certainly welcome, but I was also thinking - it is even more important that online shops should carry such warnings. Otherwise how are we to know when ordering something online? After today's experiences, I'm already worried I can no longer just go online and order a disc, without doing some kind of research first. The bastards! ------------------------------ Date: Thu, 22 Dec 2005 23:44:54 -0800 From: paul kim Subject: lissa schnecken....etc. and my favorites from next year? Hey, wow, it's weird when you see names of people you know pop up, isn't it? Todd mentioned Lissa Schneckenburger, a fiddler, as one of his faves of the year. I was at Berklee in Boston when she was at the New England Conservatory, and she was fiddling buddies with two of my string compatriots, Hanneke Cassel and Laura Cortese. In fact, they are in a group together called Halali which does some fab trad and not-so-trad songs. Oh, and Hanneke's album, Some Melodious Sonnet, was my second favorite album last year, behind Sarah Slean's Day One. Even if you aren't into scottish/celtic fiddle, you should give that album a twirl. It doesn't stick to the rote interpretations or give the songs that "World Music" sheen, but instead is alive with soul and passion and a little edge. Hanneke is a huge U2 fan, and she does an arrangement of their Mothers of the Disappeared that is brilliant. Oh, and Todd, one of my best friends from high school lives in Asheville. :) She works with a youth oriented wilderness outfit near there. Small world. ******** I'm still trying to remember what albums and concerts I listened to this year, so that I can compile a list. Among my favorite shows were Doves, Kinnie Starr, Nerina Pallot, and Vienna Teng's residency at the Hotel Cafe. I'm still watching Inara George duke it out with Imogen Heap for best album. Best movie? Wallace and Gromit. Second year in a row that a "kid's" flick gets top spot for me. I do know that I am looking forward with wild anticipation to next year, when I can get new releases (domestically) from Sarah Harmer, Bic Runga, Leona Naess, and my friend Adrianne who is now working on an album for Wheat Recording/Ryko. Yay! Amazon.com does note this, at least on some albums; unfortunately I didn't realize until after I had bought a few DRMd cds online, but at least it's good to know now. Probably not, since reviewers depend on the record labels for free copies to review. When I am making a CDr from a 'clean' disc it is recorded into the system at 10X. If it is a already recorded CDr that I am copying or the occasional protected CD, the unit says 'can't copy' and I use the Analog switch and it is recorded into at 2X. With the quality of 2004 or 5 electronics, I can't hear the difference of a first generation analog vs the original. I offer the services of this unit to Ectoland. If it is worth it to you to do the package, postage set up for both ways, a blank CDr or, say, about 25-30 cents, for my cost (30 for 5 pr 6 bucks these days), I will donate the time and energy to make a copy. At least until I find myself swamped with them 8-). But, if all I have to do is open a package and dub a or a few CDrs and put them into a provided pre-stamped package and mail them back, I do not see much of a problem. Email me off-list. FYI: I live in Kansas USA. [Topeka. Google "Fred Phelps" to see what kind of hell living in a 666xx zip code can be 8-)] Fuzzy Blue forever!! bye, KrW I'm Peter Pan! I'm perpetually young!! OW!! Hi there, Just wondering if any Chicago area Ecto-phile has today's edition of the Chicago Sun-Times. I got bitch-slapped by Roger Ebert in his "Wolf Creek" review and would love to have a print copy ;-) I'd gladly cover newspaper and postage costs.... Many thanks and happiest of holidays to everyone, Laura ------------------------------ Date: Sat, 24 Dec 2005 16:07:04 +1100 From: "Anthony Horan" Subject: Re: speaking of imogen heap... > Thanks meth, for the Imogen tour dates! Just her, a guitar and the strangest sampler/effects pedal in existence; watching her build up complete backing tracks in the thing then play along with herself was thrilling. I think you'll enjoy this one :-) ------------------------------ End of ecto-digest V11 #351 ***************************
