Though I don't think I would be able to afford to pay $1,000 for a CD, even if it was by one of my favorite artists! Has anyone here ever heard of Marissa Marchant? - --Sue The Price Is Variable Would you pay as much for a good record as you would for a fine bottle of vino? By Chris Dahlen Maybe you've heard of Marissa Marchant, maybe not. A couple of years ago, she was just another unsigned singer/songwriter toiling in New York City, as common as a pigeon or a hot dog vendor. But she had bigger plans. When it came time to sell her albums, Marchant decided that her music was worth more than the usual $18 a CD: She had experience, and training, and extraordinary gifts. As she explained to ultrasecretwebsite.com, "I was sick of being taken for granted and decided to wake some people up with exorbitant prices. People don't want musicians to think highly of themselves, but plumbers are allowed to get 500 dollars for changing a pipe for an hour." So, on her Web site, she charged a cool $1,000 a disc -- or $2,000 if you bought all four... (At KTWU PBS TV in Topeka KS)... We have our own weekly production called, "The Aisle Seat", with a local movie critic. This evening he was going to talk to his friend Jay Underwood. Mr Underwood came with his father-in-law and his son. He seemed sorta familiar. I gave them a tour and explained how and what and where the Digital stuff worked. He asked stuff and I answered and we got along quite well. I showed his son some Magic tricks and showed him how they were done. Then someone mentioned, The Boy Who Could Fly, and the penny dropped!! I said, " I really loved that movie and I liked your guest starring on Voyager and even the Disney Robot son movies." While he was in the Studio I Image - Googled him and found a 2001 photo and had it printed in the office next door. While on the show and reminiscing about his movies [ including the almost finished Roger Corman FANTASTIC FOUR, that had its plug pulled at the last month] he mentioned going into the Ministry and joked about becoming 'Chaplain To the Studios'. Before he left I said, " You are being attacked by a 'throng' of fan", and handed him the paper. He wrote, "To Kerry, Always remember The Boy Who Could Fly! Thanks for the KTWU control room tour! Your friend, Jay Underwood" All in all, not a bad day! .... ps: If you have never seen The Boy Who Could Fly: YOU MUST!!! Sit back and really enjoy, I guarantee! ....................................................... Hope you all have a day like this! Enjoy whatever you call this season. Bye, [PS: Cyoahka: I'm the "Ectophile" who just got your stuff from CDBaby] KrW I'm Peter Pan! I'm perpetually young!! OW!! Why yes I would. I am perfectly satisfied with the wine I can buy for less than 15 dollars a bottle, and that is precisely what I think is also a fair price for a CD. But if someone prefers to pay 1000 dollars, well... there's one born every minute, isn't that right? And that goes for wine, as well. There is no sane reason why a bottle of drink should cost that much. So really what we have here is a perfectly unreasonable comparison offered in support for a completely silly idea. It all fits. ------------------------------ Date: Fri, 23 Dec 2005 00:05:27 +1100 (EST) From: "Sherlyn Koo" Subject: Re: 2006 Favorites Hey folks, Heidi Meier said: > on the local [australian] front, i confess that i've still been > listening to missy higgins' "the sound of white" [released in 2004] a > lot and also clare bowditch and the feeding set's "what was left." Heh - I'm still listening to the Missy Higgins album a lot as well. :) I just bought the Clare Bowditch album also - it's great (but shame about the copy protection). I think she sounds quite like Jane Siberry at times, at other times completely reminds me of (sadly missed) Shelby Starner. Definitely worth checking out! On a related note, there's a great new compilation out (here in Oz and in NZ at least, not sure about other countries) called "She Will Have Her Way: The Songs of Tim & Neil Finn". As the name would suggest, it's an album of covers of songs by the Finn brothers - some Crowded House songs, some Split Enz songs, and a few others as well - all done by female artists. Clare Bowditch does a beautiful cover of "Fall at Your Feet", and Sarah Blasko's version of "Don't Dream It's Over" is excellent also, as is Missy Higgins covering "Stuff and Nonsense". In fact, I like pretty much every song on the album - the whole thing is awesome and definitely recommended for any Split Enz, Crowded House or general Finn brother admirer. This will probably be my last post for the year so I hope everybody has a happy and safe holiday season (of whatever flavour you do/don't celebrate) and a wonderful new year. Hola, I don't know about ecto, but the best wedding band in the world is Brave Combo. And they might actually turn up to play at a wedding. How often does a band with 2 grammies play a wedding? A good backup would be Little Jack Melody and His Young Turks. Though, this group has so many sad, lost my love songs that it might be something of a downer. "Separate Vacations" would put the happy couple on notice concerning their future. But the lead singer is married, so blissful union must not be so far-fetched. I've been too poor and spending too much time perfecting a bluegrass repertoire to have any new music recommendations this year. But, I did go crazy over Thelonius Monk (that Clint Eastwood movie, "Straight No Chaser," about Monk is wonderful) and I put my friends onto the Jim Kweskin Jug Band. Bye, Lyle ------------------------------ Date: Thu, 22 Dec 2005 11:56:21 -0800 (PST) From: Todd Pierce Subject: 2005 Favorites OK, someone jumped first, so I can respond now. In no particular order after the top 3, here are my top 10 (and actually, I think I only bought about 15 LPs this year). (oops, _CDs_!!!) ***Top 3*** Kate Bush, Aerial. This has to be #1. Kate's best since Hounds of Love, I think. For me, it will not replace HOL or The Dreaming as her best works, and it has several 'filler' cuts, but it is a wonderful album full of lovely music, and attention to detail, down to the beautiful packaging. If this is her last album, what a better way to go than with The Red Shoes. I could listen to Cd2 every day. Fiona Apple, Extraordinary Machine. A close #2. I had been listening to the earlier version of this album, and still prefer that one, but this version for me is still much more interesting and better than her earlier albums. Nerina Pallot, Fires. A close #3. Yeah her flash web site is annoying, and it's an import, but what an album - hints of Kate, Tori, Fiona, Molly Zenobia, Carole King, but definitely her own person. The track 'Idaho' gets my vote for song of the year. *** The Rest*** Tori Amos, The Beekeeper. Nice enough, but pales next to Scarlet's Walk. I doubt I have played this even 5 times. Aimee Mann, The Forgotten Arm. Aimee never lets you down. Super. Maria McKee, Peddlin Dreams. I don't know if Maria will ever top Life Is Sweet, but she can keep trying all she wants and I'll keep buying. More hit than miss on this album. Natalie Merchant, Retrospective. A collection of her solo work, I had lost interest in her after she left 10000 Maniacs, and this shows me the great stuff I have been missing. Anna Nalick, Wreck of the Day. A bit poppish, and her single Breathe is on 'mainstream' radio here a lot, but it's better than 95% of the other stuff on the radio. Lissa Schneckenburger, Lissa Schneckenburger. Great traditional folk/Celtic fiddle playing, a super live performer, and what a name. Crowfoot, Nadajai. In contrast to Lissa, here we have modern folk/Celtic tunes, inventive and clever tunes for fiddle, guitar, flute. Kelly Clarkson, Breakway. OK, I know I blew any credibility I have by listing this one, but sometimes you just need a pure pop album for long car trips, and this one does it for me. And it is much better than I thought it would be. ***Should Have Beens*** If I had bought Charlotte Martin's Veins, it would probably be on this list. I asked for it for Xmas. :) And if Emilie Autumn had released Opheliac, (due next Jan/Feb?) it would probably be here too. And if I could do repeats, I'd put last year's entry for Katy Rose, Because I Can, on the 2005 list, as I have listened to that one more this year than probably half of this year's list. Copy protection?!? I never noticed ... Oh my God, it's there!!!! I BOUGHT A COPY PROTECTED DISK!!!! I never noticed, I swear! Unfortunately I've had it for over a month and the receipt is long gone so I'll have to live with myself somehow. Damn, damn, damn. I never noticed because I happen to run Linux on my computers. Can you give me any guarantee the next copy protection scheme they come up with will still be oblivious to Linux? BTW, I just went to the record store, hoping to get Over The Rhine's latest, "Drunkard's Prayer". They had it OK, but with Claire's disaster still fresh in mind, I looked this time. Guess what? Copy protected as well! Damn. Another one I can't buy. I'll see if I can download it instead - something I'd have never considered otherwise...
