Veda is touring through Europe since few weeks. The location is a little, old, volunteer-operated club with a small stage surrounded from three sides by about 70 seats. I was late because the weather was bad (we had the first snow) and there were some traffic congestions. When I arrived the room was only filled halfway. Veda together with Patsy Klein opened the evening as 'The Fits' - not exactly my taste, and mostly Patsy did the lead singing whose voice is far inferior to Veda's. But then: two sets and quite some encores from Veda and her band - a total of nearly 2 hours of finest songs. The show was based mainly upon her latest album 'Return of the Kildeer'. I did not note a set list as I did not know most of the songs before, and wanted to listen to the music primarily. She is really great live! During the break there was plenty of opportunity to chat with Veda who was offering CDs - one album was already sold out as it was the second last show of this tour. I bought the four available voice albums including 'Return of the Kildeer'. We talked few minutes - she came from Vienna where she had performed the night before, and wanted to leave the next day at 8 a. m. for Slubice in Poland. They go all the way by car - each of these two drives is 600 km at least (400 miles, for the non-metric among us :-) . This tour program is far from a holiday in Europe with some concerts in the evening.... She told us that she will be back in 2006 in the area for a tour too. How lucky we are! I get the impression it's a woman alone (who > does not want to be alone), who is fairly obsessive about cleaning, but who > is desperately missing her man. Did he die? Did he leave? From the Onion review: "'Mrs. Bartolozzi,' about a load of laundry that inspires an erotic reverie." Yes, this reviewer gets it! But it seems some (including some who have sorta-dissed it here) miss the point of the song. This is how I hear this piece: I do NOT interpret it as an ode to domesticity, as some have said, or a "charwoman" as you put it. It's not even about laundry, to my ear. I hear the dull throbbing of the washing machine agitating (her left hand playing as she approaches the "washing machine" chorus), and imagine Mrs. Bartolozzi sitting atop the machine, eyes closed in "erotic reverie" enjoying--wistfully because her man is NOT there, for whatever reason--the vibrations of the machine that is entangling her garments with his. It's more subtle there, but all but overt in the repetition of "oh and waves are coming in, oh and the waves are going out..." (in-and-out!) Maybe the anguished "and it looks so alive" (regarding his shirt on the line) implies he's dead, but that doesn't really matter to me. It's erotic, and it's about him, and he's not there. It's not about the joys (or sorrows) of cleaning any more than "Then I'd taken the kiss of seedcake back from his mouth, Going deep South, go down...." (TSW) was about heading to Brighton to go to her favorite pastry shop. - --Chris np: Aerial ------------------------------ Date: Sun, 27 Nov 2005 15:02:32 -0500 From: Jeffrey Burka Subject: Re: Aerial singles brad asks: > Is there a single with other songs? yes, there's a british single that's backed with the recorded-forever- ago "Sexual Healing" that I can remember reading rumors about on Love- Hounds last century... I did make 3 though, and Jorane will be here on Wednesday (anyone else going?) Vienna Teng - Triple Door - 11/9/05My third time seeing Vienna. She had Marika Hughes with her on cello and a percussionist, Shahzad Ismaily, which was cool. I'd seen her with Marika before, who was lovely as usual, but hearing the songs with drums really gave them a different aspect than in the other performances. The set opened with a powerful and haunting version of "Feather Moon," followed by "Gravity," "Hope on Fire," "Shasta," "Blue Blue Caravan," and "My Medea" which gave me chills. Solo she played a gospel-tinged Brian Webb song, "That's Where I'll Be" and "The Atheist's Christmas Carol." After a short break she came back and played "Eric's Song" and "Lullabye for a Stormy Night" solo, "Tower" with opening act David Berkeley on vocals, a new song "One Bedroom, One Bath" with full band (which included David on guitar). They started another new song after that, but, sadly, I had to leave. In between songs, Vienna was her usual charming self, so it was a great night even though it was cut a bit short. Rachael Sage - St. Cloud's - 11/11/05Rachael Sage was the only Rockrgrrl set I got to see, but I was really glad I got to see her. It was my first time seeing Rachael in Seattle, also the first time I've seen her with a horn player. Again, it's really great to hear the songs take on different lives when you hear them played with different combinations of instruments. Rachael is always changing the style of her songs too, so performances are always fresh. "Sistersong" sounded quite different than it did in New York a month before, both versions quite different from the album. "Alright OK," "Paperplane," "Burning Witch," and "Hit Song," all from the forthcoming album, made the set list, as did the older songs "Trouble" and "What If." La Guitara - Triple Door - 11/16/05If anyone has a chance to see La Guitara, Patty Larkin's traveling showcase of female guitarists, you should not miss it. I've been a fan of Patty's for years and have only seen her once, so I was most excited to see her again. But the other guitarists (at this stop they were Muriel Anderson, Mimi Fox, and Kaki King) really impressed me. The show started and ended with the women playing a couple of pieces as a quartet (including Patty's "Bound Brook" and "Louder"). I'm not into blues and jazz really, but Mimi Fox was a very talented and captivating performer. Muriel Anderson took us on a world tour with stops in Spain and Japan, among other places. One of her guitars was a harp guitar, which is a really neat-looking thing. Kaki King had a variety of styles (some of which are like Michael Hedges) and different guitars and effects. She's really fresh, and I think she deserves the reputation as an original performer she's earning. Patty was wonderful, of course. She started with "Tango" and mostly played her instrumental pieces which I recognized but couldn't name, though "Ain't That As Good" got in there. Mimi Fox joined her for an extraordinarily beautiful version of "The Cranes." The cd, also called La Guitara, is a stunning collection of 14 female guitarists with a range of styles. Truly, it is one of the few compilation albums that I don't skip any tracks on. Part of the proceeds go to an organization that introduces guitars to schools. There's a company in Germany that makes rabbit tents, but they won't ship to the US. I think my sister's pet rabbit would really enjoy one and would like to get it for her as a Christmas present. If any ectophiles in Germany wouldn't mind helping me out, please email me off-list. I'd be happy to work out some sort of payment, whether monetary or in the form of music or other products. Thanks.
