I remember Chris' visit too. I remember laying in bed with my girlfriend at the time. She said "So, who is that guy staying with us?" "Oh, just someone from an internet group I'm on" "How do we know he isn't an axe murderer or thief?" "Really, I don't think he's traveling across the country killing all the people who will let him stay with them!" "Well, I'm going to lock the bedroom door anyway" I also remember.... waiting impatiently to drive Chris to the train station, even though he was completely unconcerned about the time. Don't you want to go, the train leaves in 20 minutes??? Oh, ok. And then getting to the train station and he wanted to climb the hill outside to take a picture. Um, your train leaves in 5 minutes. It's ok, we'll just go up there and take a picture. Are you still that laid back? :) neal nr: Spirits of the Ordinary - Kathleen Alcala now shuffling over: # San Diego House Concert highlights (Cindy Lee Berryhill, Joy Eden Harrison, Elizabeth Hummel) # Song of the Traveling Daughter - Abigail Washburn (from Uncle Earl. Really extraordinary. > > Bowen I noted the lack of beats as well. I've only managed one listen of Aerial myself and have to admit I'm rather underwhelmed. The first disk strikes me as "Kate noddling around singing some stuff over some piano background". Now that I've branded myself as a heretic (or wait, this isn't LoveHounds ;) , I can say that at least a couple tracks from the second disk have some "atmosphere" to them which makes them a little more listenable for me. Those initial tracks though reminded me of the made-up songs my 6-year-old daughter sings where she invents the words as she goes and they follow no particular melody or tune throughout... Maybe I'm just a sucker for structure or rhythm or something, but I kept thinking to myself "this track could use a bass guitar.. this other one needs drums..". Granted a couple of them *have* those things, but still didn't stir me much... But if you consider some of my favorite songs from KaTe are ones like "Suspended in Gaffa", "Reaching Out", "The Big Sky", "Deeper Understanding", and all of these have some tempo to them, it's not hard to see why these new tracks seem a little thin by comparison. So of course YMMV. But just thought I'd share my initial thoughts... moo. brian ------------------------------ Date: Wed, 23 Nov 2005 10:28:55 -0500 From: aural gratification Subject: Re: ecto-digest V11 #320 Hey There Sailors.............. Thanks for so many Birthday greetings. You guys rock !!!!!!! and it's nice to be remembered here in the land of fuzzy blue. Y'all have a beautiful, safe, thankful and happy holiday. BUT! then I went to howstuffworks.com, and discovered that the backlight that allows me to see the contents of the LCD screen comes from a flourescent tube, which as we know generates its light by converting ultraviolet light into visible light by a layer of phosphor on the inside of the glass tube, so YES, I have phosphors too :) ] So meth, it is good to see your phosphors too! Hello jessica! Sounds like you had a tough time, it's good to hear it's all going in the right direction now! I must say that I myself was hesitant to come back after all those years, unsure of how things have changed, and who would actually still be around. Seems like I needn't have worried ... :) Hi Neal! I think you're right about many of the ecto-hosteliers still being here. And there were quite a few :) Brni, it was the stork. Did you know that it's called an Ooievaar in Dutch ? I guess not. And hello Vickie! Thanks for all the photos. It was August 1993, by the way. Did I really have that much hair on my head back then ? It was a rather spectacular hat, and I also like the Doctor Who T shirt I was wearing (if you look closely it goes "dumba da dum, dumba da dum, dumba da dum, diddley dum"). I've forgotten half the things I did back then, and it's great to see some of the old memories. When I get back to Australia, I will dig out my photos, and scan some of them in. I bet you're happy to have a bit more space too, as I recall you had lots of stuff ;) Woj, when did Tribe break up ?? I remember the concert in NYC, back in '93, in that old converted church. So what happened to them, are any of them still making music ? On another ectopian issue, have you guys heard of Kristina Olsen ? She's an American folk singer who seems to travel alot. I saw her a couple of years ago at the Daylesford Singers Festival (or something), and have several of her CDs. Very ecto, I reckon. Anyway, a while back she emailed some UK dates (http://www.kristinaolsen.net/tourdates.htm) check her out! Anyway, I really should do some work ... Chris. ------------------------------ End of ecto-digest V11 #321 ***************************
