I am going to be at our favorite local music emporium, Exile On Main St. when they open tomorrow morning, I am going to buy the album, and then I am going to go on a bit of a drive to listen to it. :) Back in 1993 when _The Red Shoes_ came out, I was on pins and needles all morning at work ... then the minute I could escape for lunch I ran to the closest record store (Strawberries, I believe it was) to buy it. I then sat in my car and listened to it while eating my lunch ... and then spent the rest of the day trying in vain to convince myself that it had been worth the wait. Judging from what I've read online and in the press, I think tomorrow is going to be a lot more rewarding ... we shall have to see. :) - -- =============================================== Meredith Tarr New Haven, CT USA mailto:meth@smoe.org http://www.smoe.org/meth =============================================== hear at the HOMe House Concert Series http://hom.smoe.org =============================================== ------------------------------ Date: Mon, 07 Nov 2005 13:45:50 -0500 From: "Jeffrey Burka" Subject: Re: lene lovich neile, on people she wants to come back: > Susan Court Alas, that seems rather unlikely, based on Susan's current lines of work (check out photosprout.com and sugarsprout.com). I remember in '89 buying TSW on the tuesday in october on which it was released, at College Mall in Bloomington, IN, but it was late afternoon...when TRS came out in 11/93, Kemp Mill Records on Connecticut Avenue here in DC stayed open 'til midnight to sell it (along with kd lang's _Even Cowgirls Get the Blues_, which was released on the same day). Even better, the store had a stack of Red Shoes t-shirts they'd gotten from the label, which they were handing out to anybody who bought KaTe's disc. I'll admit that I found myself wondering if anybody would stay open 'til midnight tonight... if so, I'd probably be willing to go out and wait in line. But Kemp Mill is long gone and I haven't heard about anybody staying open... As for the leak, while on the one hand I kept telling myself that I'd waited 12 years, what's another week, I must admit that I did nab a copy of _Aerial_. Only listened to it twice so far, but I'm rather taken with it so far... jeff n.p. _Aerial_, Kate Bush ------------------------------ Date: Mon, 7 Nov 2005 11:07:31 -0800 (PST) From: Ellen Rawson Subject: have Kate CD in hand... ...and will start playing it soon... When TRS came out, I was also living in Atlanta. 10 years passed between my Atlanta stints, making me wonder if there's some cosmic connection between Kate and me living in Atlanta. :) I haven't heard Aerial yet, though I have been seriously tempted. Does anyone know if there's any difference between the british and american versions? Or if there's other fun Kate stuff for sale there? I'll be in London later this week, and have it on my shopping list. Which brings to mind that I was visiting London when RutH came out... ==> Valerie (firmly back in the ecto closet again, after my once every few years appearance) ___________________________________________________________ How much free photo storage do you get? If you haven't spent time with Birds (indoors/outdoors) hopefully it will inspire you to dwelve into their world and interact within it, as you will appreciate, deeply, what Kate has produced. I have 2 african grey parrots (and bird friends outdoors) and on one song, they joined right with Kate, laughing (they laugh and talk), and whislting with the birds in the track. Classic! It appears to be identical to the US release. I did buy the "King of the Mountain" single while I was there (and the bee-side is a cover of 'Sexual Healing'). HMV several of her older albums on sale (all around #5 each), but nothing terribly out-of-the-ordinary. If you're going to be in the West End area, pick up one of those free tacky tourist maps of the area -- it's got a #5 coupon (#35 minimum purchase) for HMV locations around Leicester Square and Piccadilly Circus. /nm ------------------------------ Date: Mon, 07 Nov 2005 13:30:41 -0800 From: Birdie Subject: Re: have Kate CD in hand... Then I went back and listened to most of her back catalog, because it put me into a very Kate mood--you know what I'm talking about! In addition to just sounding aurally gorgeous, it strikes me as much more quietly contemplative (versus non-quietly contemplative!), even meditative, than much of her work. One must listen carefully and closely. You don't just crank it up while you clean the house--or at least I don't. You sit down and listen to it like you're reading a book; headphones are recommended. It's one of those pieces of art that I have to develop a relationship with over time as it's character (and characters) becomes familiar. I've felt that way about most of Kate Bush's work; in fact, nearly all of my very favorite music fits that description, and I don't suppose that's at all an uncommon phenomenon among people who appreciate good music. - --Chris PS: by the way, thanks to Jeff Burka for introducing me to Kate Bush many years ago at college. My musical tastes were not very well developed at the time, and Kate was an absolute revelation. "How To Be Invisible" has taken over as my favorite Kate Bush song, maybe co-favorite with "The Fog". I could listen to it all day...I love the new wave type beat with the ethereal touches...The rest of the first disc also very strong, "Pi" and 'Bertie" are a great song and all the songs are good, I think I just love "How to be Invisible" so much it kind of overshadows the others... I'm surprised she chose "King of the Mountain", it's probably my least favorite track on the album (although still decent). The second disc is just brilliant all the way through...I love how the quieter songs build up to the beautiful crescendo of Nocturne" and the title track. "Nocturne" is another favorite of mine, the way she starts off singing so slowly and then the beautifully infectious chorus "We stand un the Atlantic and we become panoramic...". I can't say enough good about this albums, it's one of those instant classics that come along every couple of years where all the songs are good and over 50% are just damn brilliant. After years of being a bit on the fence with Kate, this album has converted me, she is a genius. I'll listen to my older Kate albums later to see if I view them differently but right now I just want to listen to this wondrous music. That depends on what you mean by happy. Do they ever just listen to music on the radio, or do they only do it as background noise while doing something else (most obviously driving)? How many hours a week do they listen to those old CD's and how do they listen? Do they listen only when doing something else or do they ever focus on listening? Back in the day, I listened to the radio while doing other things and I listened to records that I'd had for years. If I was happy (or unhappy) it had nothing to do with music one way or the other. Happiness in my case was really a variety of indifference. If you were to ask me if I was happy with the shingles on the roof of my house, I might say yes, but that would indicate only that they weren't a problem for me rather than that I had any emotional connection with them. In those days, my emotional connection with music was about on a par with that. It is of course possible that the people we're discussing do have some emotional attachment to their music which has survived the passage of time; maybe they do sometimes just listen the music to enjoy it as a primary experience and seek to shut out distractions. If that is how they are with it, then they are definitely in a different state than I was, and in thinking otherwise I've just been projecting my own past onto them, which is always a risk when trying to understand this sort of thing.
