Just saw Karine Polwart in London last night as part of the Folk in the Fall series. *sigh* Sometimes I wish we lived closer to London (we're two hours away) so we could make more of these shows. Anyway... Last year, Ian and I met up with Jason to see Karine in a singer-songwriter in the round show for this folk series; she was one of four performers. This time, at the same venue (Purcell Room at the Royal Festival Hall -- and hey, Londoners, there's a Wagamama now at the RFH, along with a branch of Foyles!!), she performed with her band, which includes her brother and partner, to a sold-out house. If you don't know who she is, you missed her when she was the lead singer of Malinky (she announced that the new line-up just released a new CD) or you missed her excellent debut solo album, Faultlines, which helped her earn some BBC Folk Awards. Good show. She played some new songs, some of which I liked and some of which may take some time. The new album should be out in the spring, she hopes, and she was selling a limited edition EP (made for this tour) with two new songs and three live renditions of older songs. (She said something about how in a way, we might not want it since it would be kind of boring with only two new songs. ;) She truly is a lovely person; we had a couple of minutes to chat with her afterwards. The bigshot reviewers never say "my favorite 50 albums" it's always "top" or "best". The implication is "I'm the expert and if you disagree with me you're wrong". I think that's total arrogant BS. ------------------------------ Date: Fri, 4 Nov 2005 13:03:34 -0700 From: neal copperman Subject: Re: Charlotte Martin At 2:34 PM -0500 11/4/05, wojizzle forizzle wrote: >interestingly, while working on that recording last night, i decided >i liked the show more than i remembered. perhaps distance from the >experience was a good thing. I wonder how often that happens. I have that experience all the time. I feel like a recording should be a pale imitation of the show, but that often isn't the case. Maybe the chance to listen repeatedly in the comfort of my home counts for more then the live experience? neal ------------------------------ Date: Fri, 4 Nov 2005 15:43:47 -0600 From: "Collected Sounds" <2345@collectedsounds.com> Subject: Re: Charlotte Martin From: "neal copperman" > Maybe the chance to listen repeatedly in the comfort of my home counts for > more then the live experience? I certainly find that in the case of Ani DiFranco! I have a bootleg of a show I went to and I love it. I enjoy much more than the show when I have to listen to her teenage fans giggle wildly and scream when she swears and then sing along at the tops of their lungs. UGH. Sorry I'm an old biddy, I'm there for the music, it's not a karaoke contest. ~A ------------------------------ Date: Sat, 05 Nov 2005 09:56:52 +1100 From: andrew fries Subject: Hannah Fury, was Re: Sarah Harmer News! Yes, I was so happy to see her website was alive again. I was starting to wonder if we'd ever hear of her again... and then yesterday I actually received email from Hannah, telling me about this upcoming release. I am very excited about it, much more than about Aerial. Then again, Kate Bush doesn't send me personal notes about her upcoming releases :) ------------------------------ Date: Fri, 4 Nov 2005 15:55:02 -0800 (PST) From: "Xenu's Sister" Subject: Re: Charlotte Martin I agree with Neile about Char's new songs, the new EP is fantastic. I like it better than anything else she's ever done. meth is going to do a spit-take when she hears Charlotte's almost direct take of "Father Lucifer" (in the song "Bones" which I think Char should definitely leave off the album to avoid possible litigation), but beside that, it's full of excellent songs. "Veins" and "Under The Gravel Skies" are my favorites. - --- wojizzle forizzle wrote: > and in case anyone didn't know, there are a bunch > of live recordings of charlotte martin up on the > live music archive. all of them are in lossless > (shn/flac) and many have mp3 files available as > well. i uploaded the june nyc show last night and > a couple shows for her current fall gigs are already > there as well. check 'em out if you are so inclined... > > http://www.archive.org/audio/etreelisting-browse.php?cat=Charlotte%20Martin I haven't been there yet, but if you (or anyone) ever sees the Schubas/Chicago October 26, 2005 show anywhere, grab it (and email me pronto, please). Not only was it an amazing show with just Charlotte and her piano and a synth she called the Viper, she also covered "100 Years" by Happy. Beautifully, I might add. She even said it was by Happy Rhodes and that it was a request (from guess who?) We were going to tape the show but then when we got there found out that the battery was wonky. It was supposed to have a full charge but had leaked (or whatever it is batteries do when they lose their charge. It wouldn't have lasted a full song, so we kept it off until Char started "100 Years" (we missed the beginning) which Char segued beautifully into "Steel" but we had to turn it off and didn't get that fantastic song. Chris is supposed to make me an mp3 but hasn't yet. Since it's missing the beginning and the end, it's pretty worthless, but I'll always have it as proof that Charlotte Martin actually really honest-to-god did in fact cover Happy Rhodes. Anyway, I'd love to have the whole show, because it's one of the best I've ever been to, but I don't think anyone else recorded it. After the show I gave Char a bunch of Happy's earlier CDs (I, II, Rearmament, and Equipoise) so maybe at some point we'll hear other songs. I couldn't ask for a better person, so sweet, so talented, so passionate about music, and so supportive of other artists, to cover Happy's music. I heart Charlotte Martin!
