Reviewers are writers. The purported subject of their writing is someone else's music/movie/book/production/dance/show/whatever. That's what makes it a review, and not something else. However, outside of that, there's no particular criteria that any given reviewer needs to adhere to (unlike, say, technical writing). They can talk about the work. They can talk about issues that are tangential to the work, or use it as a springboard to talk about something that the work concerns itself with (or perhaps even with issues that the work ignores). People will either read it or not. People will either buy it or not. On Saturday, woj, myself, Don Keller and perennial lurker Rebecca Montville went to Providence to see The Dresden Dolls, Devotchka, and Faun Fables at Lupo's. My day up to that point involved many hours of traffic clusterfookage that I won't go into right now, but we eventually made it to Providence ok. We thought we were in business because the show had an advertised start time of 7:30 and it was only 7:25 when we walked through the door ... but Faun Fables (a.k.a. Dawn "The Faun" McCarthy and Brian Viglione) were just finishing their last song. This was exceedingly annoying. Oh, well. We found a prime spot on top of the stairs by the bar looking right out onto the stage, and enjoyed Devotchka's typically energetic set. Devotchka is a Ukrainian band based in Denver whose lead singer sounds frighteningly like Ian from Echo And The Bunnymen. Their instrumentation is various combinations of fiddle, bouzouki, guitar, drums, trumpet, upright bass, tuba (festooned with bright red Christmas lights :), and theremin(!). They do driving Eastern European- and Gypsy-flavored stuff, and they are great. I highly recommend them. (For further reference, the first time I saw them was opening for Gogol Bordello, and it was a perfect pairing.) The Dresden Dolls were wonderful, as usual, despite the fact that Amanda was quite ill and could barely sing. She managed to turn blowing her nose in between songs into Kleenex Theater, which very few people on earth could pull off. ;) I was rather disappointed in the set list (no new songs, not even "Backstabber"), but the performances were great and Amanda and Brian were hilariously loopy, so it was all good. I particularly enjoyed the circus aerialist who performed above the stage during "Gravity", and the 7-minute intro to "Half Jack" that clearly even impressed Amanda with its audacity. (I think it was during this part that Brian lost a stick, and it flew a good 50 feet before landing just behind where we were standing. He was insane.) Brian was having serious monitor issues throughout, and he was pissed off enough by the end of the set that he flung a cymbal stand into the rest of his kit at the end of "Girl Anachronism", and ended up tossing his guitar over his shoulder at the start of the encore. He agreed to take part in the finale, though, so we didn't miss every musician on the bill doing a rousing rendition of "The Flesh Failures" from Hair. It was a great way to end the night. Sunday evening meant a foray back to NYC, to see Imogen Heap at The Canal Room. Due to past stupidity neither woj nor I had managed to see her before, so this was exciting. We had to suffer through one of the more unbearably boring opening acts in recent memory: a duo of uber-sensitive acoustic-guitar-strumming pretty boys calling themselves Buddahead. I predict that they will have a top-10 hit and the theme song to a WB show by this time next year. (I had also guessed that they just got signed to a major label and this was their big NYC showcase, but then later Leif told me they're on the same semi-indie label Tegan and Sara are on, so what the hell do I know.) But then, finally, Imogen came onstage and proceeded to play one of the more stunning sets I've seen in a while. She was in complete command of not only herself and her voice, but also the amazingly impressive array of electronics she had on stage with her: a Yamaha keyboard, a beatbox, a Powerbook, various vox effects machines, and finally a thumb-piano thing that she kept naming but which I'm having a mental block on (mbira, maybe?). She did an interesting mix of totally rocked-out electronic songs and utterly stripped-down piano-and-vox arrangements, and both worked equally well. She was endearingly goofy between songs, too, just a big kid playing with her toys in front of a bunch of people. I immediately fell in love. :) (Sadly, I won't be able to catch her at The Living Room on Friday due to a previous commitment up here -- but since she announced that show from the stage, I'm sure there will be no getting near the place anyway.) Finally came Halloween, and Rasputina at The Bowery Ballroom in NYC, with Sarah Slean opening. (Of the entire ecto contingent in attendance I was the only one more excited for Rasputina than Slean, but that should come as no surprise.) We skipped the opening band, and got a very good spot front-ish and center for Sarah's set. I enjoyed her performance more than the last several I've seen, but I still pine for the days when she used her voice to its full potential, and didn't actively try to destroy it. When she came onstage she was obviously tipsy and she continued to drink red wine throughout the set, while singing in the very rough cabaret style she's adopted for the past few years. The result was that by the end of the half-hour set, her voice was totally shot. I wish I had a time machine so I could take her forward 10 or so years (maybe 20, if she's lucky) and show her what her life is going to be like without a singing career - -- because there's no way she's going to have any sort of a voice left if she keeps up like this. It's sad, it really is. Still, though, she captivated the audience and I think she made a bunch of new fans in the Rasputina crowd, so good on her for that. Then a not-too-terribly-interminable wait, and Rasputina came onstage -- in costume, of course. The drummer, who looks exactly like Renaissance depictions of Jesus already, was dressed accordingly in loincloth and crown of thorns, and proceeded to play the entire set looking more bored than anyone I have ever seen performing on a stage, ever. Melora was dressed as an Indian, and Zoe had on a very fetching Pirate outfit, complete with rakish eyepatch. They proceeded to do a really great show, enhanced by the fact that I was able to closely watch what they were doing on their cellos. (They also did their kickass cover of Heart's "Barracuda", which made my night. :) The set could've been 3 or 4 songs shorter and I still would've left happy, but that was more because I was sick of standing than anything else. I particularly enjoyed the encore, which was a medley of songs from their "as yet untitled rock opera". :) (Alas I'm not familiar enough with their song titles to be able to recreate a set list.) I took last night off -- I went to a UConn women's basketball game instead. *g* But tonight I'm back at it. Anyone within reach of Brooklyn, come by Pete's Candy Store tonight at 10pm to see Rachael Sage. It'll rawk. - -- =============================================== Meredith Tarr New Haven, CT USA mailto:meth@smoe.org http://www.smoe.org/meth =============================================== hear at the HOMe House Concert Series http://hom.smoe.org =============================================== ------------------------------ Date: Wed, 02 Nov 2005 13:30:25 -0500 From: "JoAnn Whetsell" Subject: FW: Grey Lop Rabbit wonderful news!! i'm so glad to hear this -------------------------------------------------------------------- From: Drew Hamilton To: Kay Kay , Elisabeth Hildebrandt , andrea dearth , JoAnn Whetsell , Erin Sharwell , Hannah Stephenson Subject: Grey Lop Rabbit Date: Wed, 2 Nov 2005 09:54:05 -0800 (PST) >Hello all, > >I just want to thank everyone of you for reaching out >to this little guy. > >A co-worker of mine heard about him and told me that >another co-worker here (a clean cut high paid >programmer whose lop passed away 9 months ago) ought >to be told of this. To me this comment is far more pretentious and insulting than the review we have been discussing. I would prefer reviewers not think of me as a "cat staring at cars" or make assumptions on what I care about. I think that "normal people" who take the trouble to read music reviews are probably somewhat interested in music so would certainly understand and probably be interested in "introspective lyrics" and "tight harmonies". Granted a couple of paragraphs on the quality of the drummer's technical performance would probably bore the average reader but just because someone isn't a musician doesn't mean they can't appreciate music on a fairly deep level. This person's assumptions are pretty condescending. And to briefly comment on something else that was brought up, I think that someone giving their feelings and impressions on a piece of music is a creative and subjective thing and not a piece of technical writing. Simply commenting on music in an intelligent way and describing the elements of it doesn't mean that someone is trying to appropriate the musician's art as their own. The reviewer is responsible not only to give a general impression but to try to explain if possible why that song or album made that impression on them. Simply That's correct, and is as it should be. A good music review should involve creativity. In that sense it isn't technical writing. But on the other hand, a review shouldn't be *fiction*. The review's creativity should only enhance the reader's perception of the art being reviewed. After all, people read a music review to learn about the music; they're not interested in learning about how skilled a creative writer the reviewer is. I suppose there are exceptions, but IMO being a music reviewer who has established a cult of personality isn't very impressive. - --Doug ------------------------------ Date: Thu, 03 Nov 2005 06:51:15 +1100 From: andrew fries Subject: Re: Fwd: Aerial download here is the torrent: http://www.torrentbox.com/torrents-details.php?id=21229 ------------------------------ Date: Wed, 2 Nov 2005 14:51:18 EST From: Toriamosrising@aol.com Subject: Aerial well it's a lil soon to review Aerial yet I guess considering I've only had it DL for a lil bit but it's odd that as much as I love KOTM it's probably my least fav of the songs on Aerial...but that could change in time..lol I didn't mean to make it sound like , if you Download Aerial that you weren't going to buy it, mine has been already preordered for awhile..lol ( I know we all love Kate and want this release to do very well:-) it's just that when Tori's "The Beekeeper" was being released I leaked it out ( not on Ecto) and it's not like there weren't a lot of people doing it..I wasn't alone there..lol BUT I got about 30-something LONG emails telling me how awful that was of me to leak the cd that early and blah blah..SO that's why I didn't leak Aerial ..my email box is full enough;-)..lol ( the only reason I'm writing this now is because some of you on here have already emailed me personally asking me where it is at..LOL...please just Google it!.. My first impression: If this is so good, then WHY AM I SO BORED ???? Seriously, I would like to know. "Bertie" is so icky and squishy I am fairly certain I will *never* play it again. "Pi" is over six minutes long, much of it consisting of Kate singing the digits of Pi. I read somewhere she wanted to see how much emotion she could put into singing each digit, and now we know the answer: not much. OK, failed experiment is still a valid experiment - fair enough - I just don't think I will ever want to hear it again, either. The rest of it? Just kind of is, leaving no particular impression on me so far, except for a general 'I've heard it all before, and it grabbed me more back then' I listened to the first CD only, because I just couldn't be bothered to play the second one just now. It felt like I'd be wasting my time... I reserve the right to change my opinion at any time. But right now I'm thinking not only will I not buy this (I wouldn't anyway, due to copy protection), but I won't even keep the download... ------------------------------ Date: Wed, 2 Nov 2005 16:12:54 -0600 From: "Collected Sounds" <2345@collectedsounds.com> Subject: Re: A Whole Lotta Shows > This was an incredibly busy weekend for live music. Produced by brilliant Cameroonian producer/bassist, Andre Manga, it features Los Angeles' finest world/jazz musicians from Cameroon, Senegal, Venezuela, Brazil, Uruguay, and the USA. Building from my first three CDs, Flying Over Bridges is a rich, rhythmic, personal, heady brew. It has already been described as "a beautiful, masterful, soaring achievement," "uplifting," "like listening to distilled sunlight," "new," "deeply moving," "an A+." Fans have emailed, "The minute it finishes, I want to play it again," and that it's "a world class album from start to finish." And that's all in one week! My first 1000 copies came through the door last week and have been flying out the door ever since. One Very Dear Friend and her mom bought 30 to give as Christmas gifts. Another in New York bought 20. I am one very blessed artiste indeed! To buy a copy, go to www.ashleymaher.com then click on "Buy CDs" for simple instructions. To buy multiple copies (for Christmas, for your family, for your dog, for everyone you know!) email me at ashmaher5@aol.com and we can work out a discounted price. I can't wait for you to hear this music! Lots of love, Ashley P.S. (You can stop reading now, if you like... However, if you just sat down with a cup of coffee and are in the mood for a story about how Flying Over Bridges came to be, read on! Also, if you would like to help me "get the record out there!" that is also below.) The Story This album means a lot to me. Three weeks after I completed my last record, The Blessed Rain, in London, my mum was diagnosed with terminal cancer. I moved with my husband and son back to Los Angeles to care for her until she passed away and, afterwards, decided to stay. Then our daughter arrived and for the last few years I've been merrily juggling music, motherhood, marriage, and money. Building from Border's Bookstore acoustic shows to clubs to big venues and festivals across the States, it's been a busy and rich time for developing onstage relationships with the LA's best world musicians, singers, drummers, and dancers ... and for writing new material. This record is perhaps my most personal to date. The song "Lucky" is about my husband returning to Africa and valuing it so much more after years in the West. "Sundiata" is about our son moving into adolescence, emboldened by the cultural mix within himself. "Gracefully" is an ode to my mum and her brave journey to the other side. "Club Dibango and the Rising Son" is inspired by Andre Manga's story of Manu Dibango taking him under his wing when he was a young bassist in Cameroon. Finally, last year, with a big backlog of songs, countless emails from fans all over the world asking me "WHEN is your next album coming out?," and this incredible band, I asked Andre if he'd be interested in producing a record on a shoestring budget. When he said "I'm in!" I was thrilled. >From that point on, I couldn't believe my good fortune. It felt like magic. Every world class musician I invited to record agreed to perform for a reduced fee. The brilliant Vinnie Colaiuta (Sting, Joni Mitchell, Every Great Artist You Can Imagine) played drums. Youssou NDour's guitarist, Jimi MBaye, was in town and played guitar on "Sundiata." Piano genius Otmaro Ruiz (Venezuela) pushed the whole sound into a new dimension with his wondrous playing. And Andre Manga's boundless talent and taste as a producer/multi-instrumentalist/engineer blew me away every day we were in the studio. He is incredible! The recording, the mixing, and the mastering studios were all supportive and generous with their valuable time, too. It has truly been a labor of love from every angle. The quality of the music is so extraordinary, it really should have cost ten times what it did. I am SO grateful to everyone who contributed! Ways You Can Help The next chapter, for me, will be an all-out push to get this music recognized alongside artists like Sade, Nora Jones, India Arie, Paul Simon, Peter Gabriel, and, yes, even Queen Joni. It feels like The Circle has turned and my time has come. If any of you have ideas to help ... people you know who are at quality record labels, managers, agents, radio and marketing, publicity people, etc., please contact me about them and visa versa. Every recommendation, every meeting, phone call, email counts, and I really appreciate your input. Also, feel free to email me your feedback on the record. Good quotes are always useful for the website/publicity and feedback can only make me a wiser and smarter artist.
