It should be done by the end of the month! I'm really excited about this one. Excerpt from her last email: - ------- Dear Friends, My long-awaited fourth album, called "Flying Over Bridges," will be available by early November. Produced by brilliant Cameroonian producer/bassist Andre Manga, it features world class musicians from Senegal, Cameroon, Venezuela, Uruguay, Brazil, and the USA. I am so excited for you to hear this record! Building from my first three CDs, "Flying Over Bridges" is a rich, rhythmic, shimmering, heady brew of African/Latin/folk/world/jazz. The title is a theme running through the record: bridges, transition, migration, the marriage of opposites, and, ultimately, transcending The Bridge itself. I will let you know the minute it is ready, so you can snag yourselves a copy! Lots of love, Ashley - --------- Also, I'm not quite sure when it happened, but The Blessed Rain is now available for download from iTunes, which strikes me as extremely cool. hopefully I'll have artwork and more info at www.ashleymaher.com soon. - -Anthony ------------------------------ Date: Thu, 13 Oct 2005 14:49:31 EDT From: Profjava@aol.com Subject: Re: Tape to computer In a message dated 10/13/2005 10:24:38 AM Eastern Daylight Time, dbailey4117@gmail.com writes: >I wonder if this RCA to phono jack method direct to computer is as high >quality a way to import the music tracks as connecting the source analog player to >a standalone cd-rw machine with RCA jacks and then taking the resulting disc >and popping it into your computer for any further editing later. I can see that one of my computers with just an intel integrated sound chip is definitely not going to handle this without a new soundcard and the other needs me to research what I have in it for a sound card (given it has a DIGI 001 added) and how to use it for this purpose. I do have a 2001 era Yamaha standalone unit with my cheap, used stereo, but am not sure how good it is; I never tried to be an audiophile with my equipment in the past though I have relatives who have a fancy stereo setup. But it's all for you :) I've used your collective names, but not in vain I hope. If you haven't been to Happy's MySpace page since I first posted about it, it's a very different landscape now. http://www.myspace.com/happyrhodes I've been a busy little bee, inviting bands/artists left and right to join Happy's "Friends" list, and oh my god are there some wonderful people on MySpace! People I've never heard of, or they slipped right by me if they were talked about here. Why did I not know about jenny owens young? (she's playing in the New York area, so NY philes should go. Seriously) Kate Earl? Ella Blame? Daughter Darling? Shamsi Ruhe? Evan Bethany? Rebekah Jordan? Maria Daines? audie? Leigh Nash? Rachel Lipson? Laura Viers? Inara George? Barbara Shaw? Frankie? Hannah Fox? Holly Taymar? Lunabee? gabby young? and so many, many, many, many others. I know that if I'd been reading Collected Sounds like I ought to, I wouldn't be so out of the loop, but it's hard to read about music and not hear it. MySpace is wonderful because artists/bands can upload their songs and people can listen to streaming audio. Which, as I write this, seems to be down, but should be back up later. I've found old sortafriends, such as Boudoir, the current band of Ala Sharon, who used to be in Psychowelders and The Catherines. I keep track of everyone I request a Friend add from, and everyone who accepts.(http://happyrhodes.org/MySpace/index.html I'm sorry it's not alphabetical, but that would be too hard, to keep 2 lists). I realize some of my add requests were out of control at the beginning. I thought I would try to do some networking and asked companies and radio stations. I've deleted quite a few of them, the ones with thousands or even tens of thousands of Friends. They'll never go to Happy's page and listen, and they'll never notice that Happy's not on their Friends list anymore. Requesting adds from people like Madonna is insane, but I did it anyway. I've since deleted her. I can't bring myself to delete Robert Smith, because it's really him and he changes his picture every few days, so it's fun. I can't bring myself to delete Spinal Tap, because it brings a smile to my face whenever I see the name in the list. That was a meaningless add request, but fun. I listen to everybody before I request a Friend add. Some are, ok, not so great, but I figure, wouldn't it be cool if some of these young artists were inspired by Happy? Maybe she'll feed some fires. I request adds from all kinds of genres, from old-timey country to trance hip-hop, because that's the way it should be. In general, I'm not inviting just plain people, unless they have Happy in their profiles. I don't want Happy's Friends list to be populated by regular people who don't give a damn about Happy. Bands/artists, and even companies/radio stations are worth having on the list for professional reasons. The bands/artists should know about Happy, and we should know about (most of) them. Right now there are something like 87 "Non-music" friends (out of a current 720). Of those, I *think* about 21 of them are Ectophiles, though I can't identify everyone. I'll *always* add Ectophiles. There are a handful of others that I thought might like Happy so I invited them, but I don't make it a habit. If anyone has any suggestions, feel free to post. I've got 132 Friends pending (meaning I've asked them to add Happy but haven't heard back yet) and more lists I need to cull for artists. Am I crazy? Wait, don't answer that... The sad thing is, I can't play most of these wonderful people on my podcast. The download function is broken, if they do offer downloads, and I have no money to go and buy all these people's music. I have to stick to my own record collection. Sigh. Aww, Vickie, thanks! :) I know that it's hard to get excited about someone just reading about them. You gotta hear it right? That's why for the CD reviews I do, where the artist is on CD Baby, I have a link to the sound files so that people can listen while they read. This is something kind of new, however, so the old reviews don't have that. I thought about adding it to them all, but I don't really fancy going through over 1000 reviews and changing the code on each one! I know, crazy, huh? But I have a "real" job too and just don't have the time. But the new ones should all be like that (unless they're not on CD Baby). I know many of the artists you mentioned, but not all. And I agree, MySpace is fantastic. I've met some great people too, it's a fun place!! Everyone should join! >Requesting adds from people like Madonna is insane, but I did it >anyway. Yeah, but keep in mind, Madonna herself probably doesn't even know what MySpace is. That's not her, that's a fan, I'm almost positive. Anyone can create a MySpace account and call it whatever they want. I have TWO Sarah McLachlan's in my group of friends, and I don't think either one is really associated with her at all. Just for fun I looked up Ben Affleck and there were several. *shrug* so while it might look cool to have Tori as one's friend, it's likely not her. :) But it's cool anyway! ~Amy Lotsberg Producer, Collected Sounds - a Guide to Women in Music www.collectedsounds.com http://www.myspace.com/collectedsounds ------------------------------ Date: Thu, 13 Oct 2005 22:15:15 -0700 (PDT) From: "Xenu's Sister" Subject: RE: God help me, I've become a MySpace junkie! - --- Collected Sounds <2345@collectedsounds.com> wrote: > Vickie wrote: > >Requesting adds from people like Madonna is insane, > >but I did it anyway. > > Yeah, but keep in mind, Madonna herself probably > doesn't even know what MySpace is. That's not her, > that's a fan, I'm almost positive. I know, that's why I said it was insane to add her. You learn pretty quickly who's "real" and who isn't. I respect the people who make it clear that it's a fan page, so that's something I added within days of starting the site (adding a disclaimer that it was a fan site, but with Happy's participation and blessing). I figure there are 2 types of artist's sites. 1) the artist has nothing to do with it, hasn't a clue and would give you a blank stare if you mentioned MySpace to them. Madonna, Sarah, Tori would fit here. 2) the artist has nothing direct to do with it, but their "people" run it and the artist knows about it. Kate Earl, Fiona, maybe, and Happy fit here. (I guess I'm a Happy people now). 3) artists who actually run their own pages. Countless indie bands/artists do, and that's what makes it so wonderful. You can actually contact these people. What's fun is finding a big name that keeps track of their page. Judie Tzuke is *really* on MS. David Gray is *really* on MS. Robert Smith, of all people, is really there. Happy could be in this category once they get settled in. It's hers anytime she wants me to hand over the password. > Anyone can create a MySpace account and call it whatever > they want. I have TWO Sarah McLachlan's in my group of > friends, and I don't think either one is really > associated with her at all. I know, I have one of them and a pending for the other, but I realize it's not them. There are a lot of people who might have pages but I can't find them. Does Noe Venable have a page? Btw, I still haven't finished going through your Friends list, which I've already stolen from liberally. Thank you. Whoever "John" and "Ian" are, thank you too. It's like a maze. You click on one person's profile and look at their Friends list, then click on someone else's and look at their Friends list, then click on and on and on. I was finding that I'd get away from the original source and forget where I came from. I started "Open Link In New Window" then end up with 30-40 browser windows open, because I wouldn't want to close a window until I'd listened to the music and explored their Friends list. I'd get too many, and my IE would freeze up, so I'd have to crash out, run Spybot and Ad-Aware (which always finds nasties from MySpace, so warning), then start all over again. I have a list a mile long of places I still need to explore to find artists. I swear I never knew there were so many girls with guitars out there. But, most of the ones I've heard are good, and some are REALLY GOOD. One thing I've found though, after listening to hundreds of songs. Happy's unique on MySpace. To complement that, I chose a haunting, unique song to play automatically, Winter. It was a hard choice though. > Just for fun I looked up Ben Affleck and there were > several. *shrug* I think MySpace's search sucks humongous donkey balls, but for the money, it's still a good value :). Btw, Keanu Reeves is really there. He's mainly interested in cancer awareness, which is a great reason to have a page. I have him as a pending. > so while it might look cool to have Tori as one's friend, > it's likely not her. :) > > But it's cool anyway! True and true! Philip, you're right, the music's back!
