This will be her second performance in NYC. & Julia Vorontsova @ 10:15 pm Julia has done quite well for herself over the past year. Performing in Paris and in the U.K., and even appearing on the BBC. She will sing for us her moody ballads of love...in not only her native Russian, but in English, Romany and if you ask, maybe even French. This event is free! Sin'e Bar is located at the corner of Stanton and Attorney Street in New York City. That's certainly an interesting licensing glitch for those of us without as US credit card address. I understand live performers wanting to leave a touched-up version of their performance for future generations. DVDs of them performing are concrete representations and will be around long after they are dead. I suppose performers don't want future listeners thinking they were talentless buffoons. I prefer life as it happens in all its flawed glory. But it is a bit painful to hear Crosby, Stills, Nash and Young singing off-key on Four Way Street. But it is also charming to hear Ringo just nearly getting the pitch on Beatles tunes. So, I am of two minds. I use Melodyne Cre8, which is a vocal fine-tuner. A pitch corrector cannot fix the one thing that distinguishes a good talent from a great talent: vocal quality. Some people's voices are so compelling that they can miss the pitch by bit and no harm is done. I guess when they miss by a tone, then they've got a problem. The software I use sometimes adds artifacts and even when the slightly off-pitch note is tuned, the vocal quality still leaves something to be desired. So, I think good vocal performers are not cheating that much when they use pitch correction. They are just smoothing a good performance out. I suppose there are people out there who really can't carry a tune in a bucket and are getting by using software. Perhaps they should use the scads of money they are making to buy singing lessons. Tuning software keeps performers from having to go over and over a vocal line until it is perfect. You can argue the merits of fast recording all day. Maybe taking months to perfect a vocal is worth the effort. I don't know. I view fine-tuners the way I view word processing programs. They can't make a writer (vocalist) great, but they can speed up the process of getting good art out. Perhaps the Live 8 performances should be released in a "verite" version and a scrubbed version. Or play it in your car or some CD players. Actually I expect it will be ripped and available on the p2p sites withing 24 hours of release. (Or maybe 24 hours before release.) DRM is a bad idea for consumers. It usually degrades the quality while providing the illusion of security, all the while treating their customers as criminals.
