Dunno about her popularity here, but I spoke with the guy at the box office at The Vic last week and he confirmed that the Dar & Joan Baez shows *were* reserved seats (the only 2 I asked about). I was speaking with someone on another list who also said that nearly every show at the Vic is general admission. Funny thing is that every show I can remember going to there has always been reserved seating. A reason why I've usuallly preferred the Vic to Park West. Perhaps it's the type of performer?? or as requested by the artist's agent? (BTW - the only show where I've ever had to turn in my pocketknife key ring to get into the theatre was the Liz Phair show at the Vic a few years ago) I'm not sure whether I'll be going to the Chicago show or not, but will be working merch at the Milwaukee show. (The Pabst Theatre is a great venue, great sound, for anyone in that area) Regards, Carolyn Andre - --- candre@house-of-music.com Chicago, IL / USA Support Independent Music! I believe that Happy is the greatest vocalist of our time. Her tone and her versatility are just awesome. I've always thought Kate sounds more like Cyndi Lauper than Happy. I admit that her music is great - but vocally there is no comparison to Happy. Nor is there ANYONE comparible to Happy. Are there any Ectophiles that agree? Speaking of "Bjork on acid", the Family Guy episode last Sunday had, as one of their cutaway gags, a clip of the game show "Bobcat or Bjork?" in which contestants listened to an audio clip and had to indentify whether it was the voice of Bobcat Goldthwaite or Bjork. ------------------------------ Date: Fri, 23 Sep 2005 16:17:02 -0400 (EDT) From: s_nevada76@hotmail.com Subject: A washingtonpost.com article from: s_nevada76@hotmail.com You have been sent this message from s_nevada76@hotmail.com as a courtesy of washingtonpost.com Personal Message: A very interesting article on Sufjan Stevens, who's been mentioned here recently. -JoAnn Sufjan Stevens's Musical States of Mind By Richard Harrington AFTER 2003's "Greetings From Michigan: The Great Lakes State" earned critical raves for literate and kaleidoscopic chamber-pop that explored the history and character of his home state, Sufjan Stevens announced a bold plan: to record an album for each and every one of the United States. My A/V system is set up so the Dish Network box feeds video to the TV but sound to the stereo. That way I can mute the TV without losing the sound, which has its own mute. I am seeing a number of shows that credit the song playing when it is a significant part of the programming, and the lyrics are being CC'd to the screen. It's the only place where song and performer credit is given. Not all networks are doing this. I have not yet determined if it is specific to a company that provides closed-captioning - some companies are very accurate and well synched to the speakers, others are really terrible: can't type, spell or synchronize. Still, if you have such a setup you can mute the sound on your taped or PVRed recordings and find out just who is doing the music, along with reading the lyrics. Being somewhat hard of hearing, it really helps to be able to skip back a minute or two and turn on the captioning to see what I missed.
