Hello, Karen:
I'm not really surprised by what's going down in the mainstream right
now - and that's given Apple's share of the OS market (Mac OS X vs.
Windows i.e.). Ah, and me using OS X Tiger and Linspire on different
machines...
Of course, if that's the way the Big Four wanna play, I'll just simply
stay clear of 'em.
Oh, and one side note: All _otaku_ hoping to get their J-fix from
Apple's iTunes Music Store for Japan are not happy campers right now:
Not only have some of the big players stayed away (Sony Music Japan?
JVC-Victor?), but unless you're a resident of Japan proper, you're not
allowed to make a purchase.
Do I need to add that finding J-pop and anime music on iTunes USA is
near-impossible? No Geneon USA, ADV, or Bandai Entertainment tracks
(often licensed from JVC or King Record's StarChild label). If you want
Mari Iijima's four US releases to date, you have to do a search of her
name to get to them. As for the other big acts with discs licensed
here...well, there's some Puffy, but no TMRevolution or X Japan. No
Maaya Sakamoto, although Geneon got to release her _Hotchpotch_
compilation here.
Oh, yeah..._some_ Utada Hikaru, but minus her first name (read: the
crappy Universal stuff). I pass.
Philip David
([sigh]... back to MySpace and the Internet Archive -
and hopefully the Linspire-friendly MP3Tunes soon)

i just cracked open some old code for the first time in three years (a
set of elisp functions for inserting words, sentences and paragraphs
of gibberish into an emacs buffer, based on my old c code at
http://usrbin.ca/gibberserver/).
i was quite amused to find, at the top, a pair of comments heading the
vowel and consonant definitions. the first is for the vowels, and
describes how the vowels are defined. the second is for the
consonants, and reads as follows:
; consonants - like vowels (not like darts)
it made me inordinately pleased. and it got me thinking - has anyone
else seen any ectophilic references in code (not necessarily their
own) or, more generally, in other unexpected places? i know i have,
though of course now that it comes down to it i can't recall any.

dunno how relevant the b52s are to ecto lovers, but:
a friend of mine, george robbins, aka GRR, was a primary designer of amiga
motherboards. this is one of his:
