First, welcome back, Ellen: I'm glad that things are on the mend for you. I, for one, have missed your postings. Second: While I, myself, am still ambivalent regarding NerinaI promise), I think a big up is due to the unsung ecto, Mike Gray, who's been plugging her for a while and who has not only met her but actually got her to attend one of Jonatha Brooke's London gigs with him. Third: Oddly, I've just finished listening to Idaho on my music player, and to me it screams Tori. In particular, the little piano thing she does halfway through, which is so Tori I can only think it's a salute to her. The rest, not so much, definitely. Fourth: finally taken delivery of the new Veda and the new La Pina, and have only had time to listen to the former all the way through, which has immediately made it into my rather sparse "Faves of 2005 so far" list. IMHO, her best since "You Do Not Live". Coincidentally, I recieved it just as I finished Murakami's latest, "Kafka on the Shore", which I thoroughly hated and rate as probably his worst. In fact, I doubt it was even him that wrote it, but the result of a contest in which someone was asked to write a novel, "Just like Murakami would, weird and sh*t". The loser got his entry published under Murakami's name. Well, that's my theory, and there's no reason, really, to inflict it on you. adam k. - ----------------------------------------------- This mail sent through http://webmail.zoom.co.uk ------------------------------ Date: Mon, 22 Aug 2005 14:05:55 -0400 From: "JoAnn Whetsell" Subject: folk recommendations and other Anyone who likes Eastmountainsouth's debut cd really needs to check out Peter Bradley Adams' solo EP. It has a very similar sound and feel - rural, sweet, contemporary folk with beautiful harmonies (he has various guest female vocalists). Sound samples at http://www.peterbradleyadams.com/ Natalie Merchant's The House Carpenter's Daughter is a stunning combination of old-timey and contemporary folk, perfectly suited to her voice (or maybe it's the other way around), wonderful instrumentation. I particularly love the darker songs like "Diver Boy." And Sarah Blasko, though not folk, is still wonderful. I too listen to her album just about every day, and it's one of the few albums I will play twice or more in a row in its entirety. I stumbled across her TV series "Instant Star" and I like her. The last episode introduced a new song by her and her co-writer (who has the same last name - brother, I guess) called "Skin" and it's very ectoish. Her other songs are fairly crunchy in a mid-teen starlet kind of way but I don't think she's completely manufactured. She does not look anything like her "Jude" character IRL (at least the video sample they ran one week) but I prefer the red hair of her character. Still, she does quite listenable music and I hope something comes of this show and her career, especially after the latest song.
