I downloaded the newest version of iTunes and spent a lot of time playing with it. I wasn't interested in the music store, but I went there out of curiosity. I had no intention of buying anything, but within 10 minutes I had bought Charlotte Martin's "In Parentheses," something I hadn't gotten around to getting. That music store is a dangerous place and I need to stay away from it. I clicked on the Podcasts/Podcasts Directory/Music and spent a lot of time sampling the various Podcasts. It's amusing how so many of them have "wacky" openings. So many, that it actually got tiring after awhile, hearing bits of old commercials and telephone call snippets and silly sound effects. The ones with normal-sounding openings started sounding refreshing after the 20th wacky opening. I only made it through a fraction of the Podcasts, but the feeling I came away with was that I have something unique. I know everybody thinks that, but in my samples I didn't hear anything remotely like SIG. In all the ones I sampled, I only heard two female voices, boyz with guitarz being as popular as ever, I see. I'm sure there are more there, but I didn't hear them. I was also reassured by the amateurish nature of many of them. I could do at least as well, if not better. I can strike a balance between scary professional (CBC, BMI) and nervous amateur (Amysue Sings a Song, brave soul she). I say that I can strike a balance because I also didn't hear a one that *only* had music and no talking. All the ones I heard at least made an effort to be somewhat of a "radio show." With that in mind, I talked to Chris and he said that when he gets back from his current trip at the beginning of next week, he'll hook me up with a microphone. I hate talking and won't talk much, but I can at least say who I played. I still have to figure out RSS. Any help would be appreciated (she whimpers). You guys will be my guinea pigs, to make sure it's working correctly before I send my cast out into the world. Because, the more I think about it, the more I *do* want it to be heard outside ecto. I do want more than a "handful" of listeners. I do want it to be on iTunes. It's not an ego thing, I just think the music deserves it. And anything that gets Happy more attention is a Good Thing. There's also no pressure on my flaky ass. I can do 3 shows in one week or 2 shows a month, it doesn't matter. People will get it when they get it and I don't have to worry about deadlines. My Podcasts would definitely not be "Podsafe" but if I generally stay away from big label artists, or at least current songs, I should be ok. If I get contacted by an artist/record company complaining, I'll be sure to tell you all, and as many other people as I can. *evil glint* After starting at the beginning of the iTunes Podcasts, sampling for hours, and still only getting up to the "D"s I think I should rename my show. How's this: ''''__---+++ AAAA Suspended In Gaffa Production +++---__'''' :) (Just kidding, but will anybody scroll down to get to the end of the "S"s?) I just realized that if I talk, I won't be able to play any Gaelic artists. No way do I want to screw up their names. I quit playing Gaelic artists/songs on my regular show because I kept getting letters from a prisoner in Leavenworth prison (I had a big following there, probably not surprisingly) always taking me to task for constantly mangling the pronunciation. He was determinned to teach me the language, but I can't cope with a language that gets "Moya" out of Maire or "Enya" out of Eithne. Maybe I'll play something and then just say "I'm not even going to try to say the name, go to the web site" (which still isn't live, grrrrr) V (Hmmm, just listened to "Chillin' with Lovespirals" which is the new incarnation of Love Spirals Downward, with a new lead singer. They didn't play much of their music, just a few seconds on the outro, the two just talked about Lovespirals and their plans for future podcasts. Fascinating. They should have at least played one full song though. I didn't even know that a) Love Spirals Downward were still around, and b) if they were, Susanne Perry was no longer the singer. They seem to be more soul-oriented now.) - -+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+ Music, all I hear is music, guaranteed to please... - -+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+ - -+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+ ------------------------------ Date: Wed, 10 Aug 2005 02:39:49 -0500 From: kerrywhite@webtv.net (kerry white) Subject: Re: Hey B'day to Happy! The first album was nothing like it, and to this day doesn't do a whole lot for me. Haunted is very much a concept album with a running theme. Something that hasn't been done to that extreme degree, or at least pulled off well for a long time. Although I haven't read her brother's book, I understand its relationship. The bigger theme (and maybe this is central in his book as well) is the death of her father. At times, the sentiments, and the between-songs bits were so personal, that I almost felt as though I was intruding. Definitely an all-time top ten for me. Musically and lyrically.
