(I liked it, didn't love it, that sort of thing.) Then, in the Fall of 2000, I saw the "Blair Witch" sequel. Not a great movie, but I loved the song that played over the closing credits: the title track to "Haunted". The next day I ran out and bought the album. (I picked up Miranda Sex Garden's "Carnival of Souls" at the same time, which was an excellent purchase as well.) That Fall was a rather tough time for me--the nadir of my life so far, in fact--and that album was really something I needed. I've never done an official Top Ten list from my collection, but "Haunted" would definitely be a strong contender for such a list, and possibly for the top spot itself. It's too bad that there hasn't been a follow-up from Poe, but as I understand it, she's been having the usual label contract issues that too many good but not-so-commercial artists end up going through. Our conversation was pleasant, but I found myself fascinated by this song, even through the distractions of the bar. Went right down to Borders the next day and had a listen! Some of my favorites from Poe would be Hey Pretty, Amazed, Walk the Walk. There are two versions of Hey Pretty. I like the one with the male reciting poetry in spoken voice over the song, very different ("extremely expensive leather pants, mind you"). And Walk the Walk...oh: "My mother spent 10 years sitting by a window Scared if she spoke she would die of a heart attack She listened as her dreams silently screamed They drowned like little dolphins caught in a fishnet Dear world i'm pleased to meet you" Bizarre, wild, fascinating :) For some reason very reminiscent of Garbage, another one I've been meaning to get my hands on. That and the Buenos Vista Social Club, the founder of which, has been in the news of late. In fact, the whole album can be thought of as a companion piece to Mark's book. The songs don't map one to one, but they definitely share similar themes.
