I could listen to this for days. I couldn't! :) While I like all of the above, I could not possibly listen to them straight without mixing in something, well, less rocking. Although the last Tanya Donelly (what what the title? I *really* should pay more attention to the new CDs I buy!) was a lot more mellow, dare I say this, grown-up, than all her previous ones... ------------------------------ Date: Sat, 9 Jul 2005 03:00:03 -0400 (EDT) From: Mike Matthews Subject: Today's your birthday, friends... i*i*i*i*i*i i*i*i*i*i*i *************** *****HAPPY********* **************BIRTHDAY********* *************************************************** *************************************************************************** ******************* Courtney Dallas (no Email address) ******************** ******************** Michael Peskura (peskura@scn.org) ******************** ******************** Finney T. Yeah, I can see that. I suppose I should throw some Lisa Germano in there or something, but it might have to wait for fall. > Although the last Tanya Donelly (what what the title? It's still growing on me, and while I don't yet adore anything on it as much as I adore "The Night You Saved My Life" and "Keeping You" from _beautysleep_, I'm not ruling out the possibility that it could happen some day. It's just kinda fun, in that I frankly still don't know all 22 of these albums well enough to identify this song as being by that artist in all cases, and there's enough overlapping of songwriting and vocal styles that I can have my own little "name that artist" gameshow in which my first guess has been wrong more than once. Oh, and I somehow forgot Belly the first time around. Oops. Ethan ------------------------------ Date: Sat, 09 Jul 2005 10:02:22 +0100 From: Adam K Subject: Business as Usual And we go on. Friday night found me in the Shepherds Bush Empire for another Van der Graaf gig. Having been seated halfway back of a large hall for their initial reunion, I had resolved to get close up for this one, and turned up to queue two hours before doors opened. This resulted in me and another fan (and nascent ectophile) right down front and centre, a matter of feet from the almighty presence itself. Clothed in purple light, the concert began with Hammill making this announcement: "Due to the events of the last 36 hours, efore we begin and carry on --- well, we WILL carry on, as that's the only reasonable response -- but we'd like to have a minute's silence". the lights go down on four bowed heads onstage. An entire rock venue cloaked in silence so complete you can not only hear a pin drop, you can hear the echo of a pin drop. Extraordinary. After that, I can't really remember much. Being down front has its advantages, but it means all the carefully mixed sound is going right over your head and what you get is a thrashing, tumultuous assault on the senses. It was a bit like sticking your head in a tumble drier in which chaos itself is being given a spin, with drums, an organ and a bunch of saxophones still in its pockets. Highlights include a version of Killer that seemed to transcend reality itself, beginning with Hammill gesturing and grinning with sheer delight at the audience and letting his inner showman shine, and climaxing with an organ solo from Banton that was unlike any other keyboard solo I have ever heard before (and, as a prog fan, I've heard a few). Demented, unearthly, it seemed to make time and space tie itself in knots and produced sounds beyond human experience, while never missing a beat. for the final finale, Hammill stepped back and let the band itself rip into the instrumental "Theme One", which was utterly, utterly thrilling. And, as we walked back to the tube, tired and sweaty but elated, we thought:: how do you translate this experience? How do you explain that you've spent the evening watching four middle-aged men (no bass player, no real lead guitarist) rip holes in the night with such overwhelming rhythmic chaos and who obviously enjoyed every minute of it? How to explain this feeling of joy and exhiliration? One thing I know, for sure: after watching these men, afer watching the passion, precision, the elation and the energy on stage, I no longer fear growing old. I know it can be done, and done well. Here's hoping we all get the chance, adam k. ------------------------------ End of ecto-digest V11 #190 ***************************
