In a mind-boggling development, Rodgers is now (or at least as of a few months ago) the new voice of Queen. I heard a bootleg of their show in Munich a while back (two days after the gig -- hooray for bittorrent), and they sound great. To his and their credit, they aren't trying to clone Freddie Mercury. Instead, they have a singer who already has a different distinctive voice, and who sounds thrilled to be doing this material (as well as some of his own hits). ------------------------------ Date: Wed, 6 Jul 2005 18:46:53 -0400 (EDT) From: Bernie Mojzes Subject: lizz wright today at lunchtime linda and i went to the high street caffe ( http://www.highstreetcaffe.com/new_home.html ) for some fabulous cajun food, and on the way home, a singer named Lizz Wright was being interviewed on WXPN. she has an amazing speaking voice, incidentally, but it is nothing compared to her singing voice... her cover of "a taste of honey" is one of the more brilliant things i've heard recently. http://www.lizzwright.net/ - -- brni i don't want the world, i just want your half. www.livejournal.com/~brni ------------------------------ Date: Wed, 06 Jul 2005 22:54:35 +0000 From: jjhanson@att.net Subject: Re: lizz wright I had the privilege of seeing Lizz last year at the Au Bar in New York City--it was an excellent show--very jazz-oriented. Her first album was definitely more r&b/jazz, but the new album would definitely appeal to ecto folks--being more folk-oriented. She does a good cover of Neil Young's Old Man (not quite as good as The Wailin' Jenny's version though). The album reminds me a lot of my favorite works of Cassandra Wilson--Lizz isn't quite as smoldering but she's a lot more consistent. Hi, I've been squeeing over this for days ... I guess it's time to actually post something about it. Emily Bezar is coming to the East Coast!! First, she is doing a show with the incomparable Amy X Neuburg at Makor in NYC on Saturday, August 6. Then the next day, she's coming to our house in New Haven!!! *dies* More info about the Makor show is at Emily's site: http://www.emilybezar.com/concerts.asp The details of our house concert: Sunday, August 7 at 7:30pm Suggested Donation: $10 Since this is an evening performance, we're going to try a potluck -- we'll fire up the grill and everything. It's not required that everyone bring something, but it's definitely encouraged. Emily's going to play our piano, and it's going to be a really really really great night. I'm figuring the ectophiles are our target audience for this, so please make your reservations by e-mailing me directly. If you're not familiar with Emily's music ... well, she's basically been putting out the records I imagine Kate Bush has been releasing in a parallel universe all this time. She has an opera degree and is a virtuoso pianist, and she writes soaring, jazz-alt-rock-cabaret-fusion compositions. I have been lucky enough to see her perform live, and I can confirm that even alone at the piano her stuff is stunning. This is a must-not-miss! Hope to see you here in August! - -- =============================================== Meredith Tarr New Haven, CT USA mailto:meth@smoe.org http://www.smoe.org/meth =============================================== hear at the HOMe House Concert Series http://hom.smoe.org =============================================== ------------------------------ End of ecto-digest V11 #187 ***************************
