I want to thank Anna Maria for originally asking me to pick up one of his albums for her, or I may have never heard of him. But based on that, I picked up an album for msyelf, then tracked him down in San Diego when I saw he'd be playing at Folk Alliance last year. His live performances are even better than his albums, and last nights house concert was superb. He writes incredibly complex songs on the piano--in a wide varieyt of styles--kind of like a male Veda Hille. Vocally he kind of reminds me of Happy--swooping from low baritone to high falsetto easily and effortlessly. I think fans of Rachel Sage, Tori AMos, Charlotte Church, Veda, etc should check him out. I found him much more versatile than Rachel Sage. He also did three interesting covers--a beautiful version of Stevie Nick's Landslide, Joni Mitchell's A Case of You, and a rousing version of Fred Eaglesmith's "I Love Trains". His new album Taurero, should be out next month sometime--it was recorded live in small house concert-like atmospheres up in Whitehorse, in Yukon Territoy. Rory splits his time between Juneau, Alaska and Portland, OR. When he isn't recording he's pretty active in the Perseverance THeater in Juneau--most recently playing Hedwig in Hedwig and the Angry Inch. You can find out more at either www.rorymerrittstitt.com or www.rorystitt.com. His first two albums, The Narcissit and Harlequin are available through CD Baby. Highly recommend him! However, as of a week or so ago there was no link to it so I assumed there was no review. I only know this because I stumbled across a video from them late one night (on MTV!) while channel surfing recently. I liked the song and when I saw who it was I recognized the name and checked out the guide. Figuring it was from the new album I went surfing for info. There I discovered an intersting site- www.metacritic.com (sorry- I've never taken the time to master copying and pasting). They review books, films, games and music. Or more accurately, they provide links to many reviews for each listing. In addition to the usual suspects (all music guide, pitchfork media, etc) they have many online newspaper links as well. I thought it was a pretty cool resource. Sorry I didn't get around to posting this a week or so ago when I first saw the video. np: Ashley Cox- As above,so below. (saw her open for Jane Siberry at the Accoustic Cafe. The album is solid and reinforces my belief that most singer songwriters sound better when their music is fleshed out with additional instrumentation). ------------------------------ Date: Thu, 30 Jun 2005 18:49:12 -0400 (EDT) From: s_nevada76@hotmail.com Subject: NYTimes.com: The Star Maker of the Semipopular This page was sent to you by: s_nevada76@hotmail.com. They were quite good -- watching them made me wish I'd been able to go to the NYC show last week, amazing since the one time I saw them I was bored out of my mind, and even with earplugs the volume was painful. Letterman was obviously very taken with them as well, which surprised me since they're a bit more raucous than I'd expect him to go for. I'm sure it'll be rerun eventually... - -- =============================================== Meredith Tarr New Haven, CT USA mailto:meth@smoe.org http://www.smoe.org/meth =============================================== hear at the HOMe House Concert Series http://hom.smoe.org =============================================== ------------------------------ Date: Thu, 30 Jun 2005 23:02:31 EDT From: Toriamosrising@aol.com Subject: Fwd: Rory Merritt Stitt Oh i love Rory Merritt Stitt!..i bought two of his cds from Cdbaby.com a few years ago...(the Narcissist is my fav)..just great music:-)..i wish i could have seen him live though:-( Bright Blessings Kris the Boy ***and threads that are golden don't break easily*** Return-Path: Received: from rly-yj02.mx.aol.com (rly-yj02.mail.aol.com [172.18.180.140]) by air-yj02.mail.aol.com (v106.2) with ESMTP id MAILINYJ22-7f942c4067d2d2; Thu, 30 Jun 2005 10:49:46 -0400 Received: from smoe.org (jane.smoe.org [199.201.145.78]) by rly-yj02.mx.aol.com (v106.2) with ESMTP id MAILRELAYINYJ23-7f942c4067d2d2; Thu, 30 Jun 2005 10:49:33 -0400 Received: from smoe.org (ident-user@localhost [127.0.0.1]) by smoe.org (8.12.10/8.12.10) with ESMTP id j5UEn1pF013225 for ; Thu, 30 Jun 2005 10:49:01 -0400 (EDT) Received: (from majordom@localhost) by smoe.org (8.12.10/8.12.10/Submit) id j5UEn1fN013224 for ecto-outgoing; Thu, 30 Jun 2005 10:49:01 -0400 (EDT) X-Authentication-Warning: smoe.org: majordom set sender to owner-ecto@smoe.org using -f Received: from mtiwmhc11.worldnet.att.net (mtiwmhc11.worldnet.att.net [204.127.131.115]) by smoe.org (8.12.10/8.12.10) with ESMTP id j5UEmvpF013209 for ; Thu, 30 Jun 2005 10:48:57 -0400 (EDT) Received: from 204.127.135.64 ([204.127.135.64]) by worldnet.att.net (mtiwmhc11) with SMTP id <2005063014440011100o7i1fe>; Thu, 30 Jun 2005 14:44:00 +0000 Received: from [199.64.0.252] by 204.127.135.64; Thu, 30 Jun 2005 14:43:59 +0000 From: jjhanson@att.net To: ecto@smoe.org Subject: Rory Merritt Stitt Date: Thu, 30 Jun 2005 14:43:59 +0000 Message-Id: <063020051443.24380.42C4052F0007BF2F00005F3C216028074102019C 020E080606@att.net> X-Mailer: AT&T Message Center Version 1 (Feb 14 2005) X-Authenticated-Sender: ampoYW5zb25AYXR0Lm5ldA== MIME-Version: 1.0 Content-Type: text/plain; charset="us-ascii" X-Spam-Checker-Version: SpamAssassin 2.63 (2004-01-11) on jane.smoe.org X-Spam-Status: No, hits=1.2 required=5.0 tests=HTML_MESSAGE, MIME_BOUND_NEXTPART,MIME_HTML_NO_CHARSET,NO_REAL_NAME autolearn=no version=2.63 X-Spam-Level: * X-Virus-Scanned: clamdscan / ClamAV version 0.60 X-Virus-Scanned: clamdscan / ClamAV version 0.60 X-Greylist: Sender IP whitelisted, not delayed by milter-greylist-1.5.8 (smoe.org [127.0.0.1]); Thu, 30 Jun 2005 10:49:01 -0400 (EDT) X-Greylist: Delayed for 00:04:51 by milter-greylist-1.5.8 (smoe.org [199.201.145.78]); Thu, 30 Jun 2005 10:48:58 -0400 (EDT) X-Converted-To-Plain-Text: from multipart/alternative by demime 0.97c-p1 X-Converted-To-Plain-Text: Alternative section used was text/plain Sender: owner-ecto@smoe.org Precedence: bulk X-AOL-IP: 199.201.145.78 Last night Neal and I hosted Rory Merritt Stitt at our house concert series.
