Hi, I know at one point we did have an ecto contingent in town, but I also know that since then a few have moved and I'm not sure if anyone is still lurking out there. In any event, I am here in Toronto through Thursday, and I have to say I really like this town *except* for the fact that in order to get online, I've had to resort to jumping on some poor sod named Pedro's unsecure wireless network as I sit in a cafe on Front Street. But at least I found something! (If anyone in town knows of *anywhere* with free wifi, I'd love to get clued in...) The reason I'm here is because Rachael Sage is. So if you're looking for some evening entertainment this week, here are a few recommendations from Rachael's tour itinerary. :) Monday, June 27 *tonight* C'est What 9:00 pm (with The Vyletz) Wednesday, June 29 Edward's Record World (Yonge at Edlington) 8:00 pm **FREE IN-STORE** Thursday, June 30 The Cameron House 10:00pm (part of the monthly "I LIKE GIRLS" series) I'm very happy to finally get to check out the famous C'est What, though it comes at a cost: Christine Fellows is at The Mod Club at the *exact* same time as Rachael's playing tonight. All together now: *ARGH*!!! Hopefully I can get over there and at least finally meet her in person before she leaves. (If you don't already have Christine's new CD _Paper Anniversary_, get thee to MapleMusic.com *now* and get it. It's unbelievably good.) - -- =============================================== Meredith Tarr New Haven, CT USA mailto:meth@smoe.org http://www.smoe.org/meth =============================================== hear at the HOMe House Concert Series http://hom.smoe.org =============================================== ------------------------------ Date: Mon, 27 Jun 2005 21:41:56 -0600 From: neal copperman Subject: eivor? and more I have been listening to a CD I picked up at Folk Alliance in Montreal by a woman from the Faroe Islands (off of Iceland) named Eivor. It's all over the map. There are songs in Swedish, Icelandic, Faroese and English. English songs, sometimes song with lethargic Canadian Bill Bourne, have a breathy haunting quality, sort of like Emmylou Harris or the McGarrigles. My favorite song is the last one: Trollabundin (Spellbound?) It's in Faroese and very striking. Not everything grabs me, but it is decidedly interesting. Check out www.eivor.com ========== Speaking of Emmylou - I was recently at Telluride Bluegrass Festival, and Emmylou was everywhere. Decent set on the main stage, and a great song swap with Gillian Welch in the park outside the festival. She sang back up for tons of people throughout the festival, but the highlight was when she and Allison Krauss joined Gillian Welch for one of their O Brother songs. (Gillian was the highlight of the festival for me, and I'd seen her before.) Other winners were Wilco, Calexico, David Bromberg, Allison Krauss' encore (which so eclipses her regular show), The Duhks and Uncle Earl. ========== Friday I saw the fantastic Ojos de Brujo (Eyes of the Wizard) - a flamenco influenced musical melange from Spain. Oh my, what a show. It's fun and exciting music. The further they wander from flamenco, them ore I like them. 3 percussionists, multiple singers, turntables, dancing, the works. I'm a bit reminded of Ozomatli with a different foundation. Super nice folks too. And serious shoppers! neal now shuffling over: Hoboken Saturday Night - The Insect Trust Goodnight Venus - Libby Kirkpatrick Right Where I Belong - Wendy Colonna 18 Dangdut Etnik (village dance music from Indonesia) Reconstruction Site - The Weakerthens I have been grooving on Wendy's CD for a while now. It just came out a month or so ago. Has some great songs. Kind of a smokey voice, with a touch of Americana. Some beautifully written songs.
