I may be ending up with a Windows box soon, so I'll definitely be streaming the Damien Rice and John Cale performances. (And I suspect that the Cale is what appeared to be a John Cage performance in scanning the list.) ------------------------------ Date: Sun, 12 Jun 2005 03:16:18 -0400 From: "Mary Chandler" Subject: wishing chair/Ember Swift Hi everyone and Java Ho, I went to Wishing Chair's website, desperately wanting to like them. They were similar to Indigo Girls, but, a tad too country for me. I live about 1.5 hours away from Yellow Springs, Ohio, and was trying to decide to make the trip there to catch the show. I noticed that Wishing Chair will be playing with Ember Swift. My sister, Antara ( @ Littleweirdgirl.com) played with Ember in Cincinnati, and Ember stayed in my childhood home for a couple of nights. Ember puts on a wild show that I highly recommend to fellow Ectophiles. What Ecto artists have them (and what do people think of them)? I have the following Ecto-ish concert DVD's: Multi-Artist: Lilith Fair Tori Amos: Welcome to Sunny Florida Bjork: Live at Shepphards Bush Empire, Live at Cambridge, Live at Royal Opera House Blondie: Live Cowboy Junkies: Open Road The Cranberries: Beneat the Skin The Cure: Trilogy (not that Ecto-ish, but a superb concert DVD) Sheryl Crow: Rockin' the Globe Live Eurythmics: Peacetour Peter Gabriel: Secret World Live, Growing Up Live Go-Gos: Live in Central Park Indigo Girls: Live at the Fillmore Jewel: Live at Humphrey's by the Bay Cyndi Lauper: Live in Paris, Live at Last Annie Lennox: Live in Central Park Aimee Mann: Live at St. Ann's Warehouse Sarah McLachlan: Mirrorball, Afterglow Live Natalie Merchant: Live in Concert, New York City, June 12, 1999 Joni Mitchell: Shadows and Light, Painting with Words and Music Roy Orbison: Black and White Night (not that Ecto-ish, but pretty amazing) Sade: Live, Lovers Live Jane Siberry: Beauty Train Concert DVD's are more variable in quality than even live albums; some are technically pretty primitive video transfers, others are marred by editing to "improve" them (there are editors of DVD's who are thoroughly convinced that a concert is a dull event that only can be made interesting through special video effects, rapid fire editing, the insertion of non-concert video footage between and during songs, and weird camera angles and others suffer from lackluster work by the performers themselves). As variable as they are, at their best they can really be pretty terrific. As a final note, the PBS show Soundstage has had a pretty terrific line-up from an Ecto perspective: well worth watching, recording, and saving (especially glorious in HDTV, if you get it), including: Tori Amos Kasey Chambers Sheryl Crow Cyndi Lauper Alanis Morissette Dar Williams Lucinda Williams ------------------------------ Date: Sun, 12 Jun 2005 16:46:41 +0000 From: "Lyle Howard" Subject: Record Signings Via Hand Delivered CDs Hola, Nadyne said: <> It happens. Bella Union (record company) seems to be good about picking up artists from EPs handed to them (or that they stumbled across). This has happened with 2 or 3 local bands in the last few years. Of course the bands playing at South By Southwest probably didn't hurt (Bella Union tends to show up there). Bella Union is probably a special case since the Cocteau Twins run their own label. I would think an artist with Sony or BMG or whoever the monoliths are nowadays wouldn't have much pull with management. I was reading an article yesterday about Bloc Party and read this: <> The whole article can be found at the Dallas Observer website. I suppose Franz Ferdinand doesn't have decision making status with a record company, but they helped push Bloc Party along. There are many avenues to stardom. But obscurity is a perfectly good place to make music from, too. I like it, but I need to watch it at least one more time before I'll be able to say anything particularly interesting about it. > Peter Gabriel: Secret World Live, Growing Up Live I've got both of these and would recommend them to anyone. There's been a lot of debate about which one is superior. My own feeling is that Secret World has some technical flaws but is the more compelling -- I'd almost say "intimate," though of course it's hard to call any stadium gig intimate -- performance. Then again, Growing Up has the new stuff (most of which I love), and you've gotta love the Zorb ball, the upside-down walk, etc. I wrote what ended up being my longest Amazon review ever about Growing Up, BTW, in case you're interested. I've heard rumors that there will be a DVD of the second leg of the Growing Up tour released around the end of the year. If so, it's terrific news. I caught a show on both legs, and while the need to restrict the action to proscenium-style stages forced them to cut back a bit on the flashy production values, I liked the set list on the second leg considerably more. In fact, I'm seriously tempted to call that concert the best I have ever seen. > Sarah McLachlan: Mirrorball Not so fond of this one. This was right around the point that Sarah's more unfortunate diva-ish tendencies started to assert themselves, and that comes out on this disc (in part due to the way it was shot) more than I would have liked. It does have the cool multi-angle thing going for it, though; I should probably play around with that a bit more. What Ecto artists have them (and what do people > think of them)? I have the following Ecto-ish concert DVD's: [snip the list] I own several of these DVDs, but I've only watched the Cowboy Junkies one when I was really able to focus on it. (The rest have been background music on a few days when I've telecommuted.) I haven't yet understood the point of the slide show on this DVD. The songs on it (all live tracks from the tour) are quite good, but the pictures ... ugh. I got the feeling that it's what happens when one gets a new Mac and wants to try out iPhoto and iDVD for the first time. It's not bad, per se, but I can't imagine really watching it. I love the two performances on there. One has the complete band, the other is an acoustic session with just Margo and Michael. I especially like that the band performance includes the complete River Trilogy, and the version of 'Bea's Song' here might just be the best one they've ever done. The last bit is an interview with Michael and Margo, and they perform a handful of tracks from _Open_. My favourite is 'Small Swift Birds', but then that's my favourite from the album, so maybe that's not much of a reflection of this particular version of it. I do have a handful of complaints about it. I'm annoyed that a certain obscenity is blipped out of the two performances of 'Small Swift Birds'. Who cares? Ugh. And the audio quality is good, but they could've gone just that extra little bit and made it surround sound. And there's the slideshow, which I really do view as pointless. Speaking of concert DVDs, though ... does anyone know how to rip the audio from a DVD? (Mac OS X preferably, but I've got a Linux box at my disposal too.) I'd like to get the audio from my concert DVDs onto my music server and get them into rotation. /nm ------------------------------ Date: Sun, 12 Jun 2005 22:05:13 -0400 From: "Bill Adler" Subject: RE: Concert DVD's Here are some DVDs that are fun to watch: October Project Live (purchase information at http://www.octoberproject.net/oped.php). October Project, of course, needs no introduction to this list. If you're an OP fan, then the DVD's a must. Marina V, www.marinav.com Marina V's a California based, indie singer/song writer who can best be described as a cross between Dar Williams and Annie Lennox -- or something like that. She has a most pleasant voice and plays catchy tunes. Originally from Russia, Marina V sings in slightly accented English, which adds a tinge of exoticness to her voice. Having said all that, I need to add that her DVD is sold out (maybe findable?) but her CDs are worth a listen. Capercaillie, http://www.capercaillie.co.uk Capercaillie's one of the most brilliant crossover Celtic bands out there: Their live DVD is worth catching if for no other reason than to see and hear Karen Matheson sing. Their songs can raise you up from the depths of despair -- or drop you down to the bottom. So it is with Celtic music. Capercaillie's live CD is quite polished. Weird Al Yankovic, http://www.weirdal.com What can I say? His DVDs are a hoot! - --Bill n.p.
