The room was >small, hardly anyone was in it, she was one woman solo with a cello -- so >why the hell did I need earplugs?! It sounded great right where we stood up at the front of the stage, but I guess that's because the PA monitors were directly above our heads blasting past us out into the room. I had no idea the volume had been a problem until you mentioned it. How odd that Jorane's own sound guy should be so unrefined with the volume. While I liked her set, I thought it lost a little something without the accompaniment she had at Joe's Pub. >After a quick trip up the street to Ray's Pizza, we went back to see The >Ditty Bops. While Meredith & co. bolted for pizza, Leif and I stuck around to see Missy Higgins, who played a solid but too-short set of about 35 minutes or so. The crowd size had increased since the end of Jorane's set, and with a generous smattering of Australians about, there was a good buzz in the room. Missy opened on keyboards by herself, and was soon joined by an acoustic guitarist whose name I didn't catch, but he played with her on several songs. Coming across like a seasoned entertainer despite her young age, Missy looked very comfortable on stage, and injected some amusing banter between songs. Either she's a perfectionist when it comes to sound, or she had some genuine monitor issues as she kept asking her sound man to adjust the mix during the breaks, but none of it seemed to affect her performance. Her vocals and playing were spot-on except for one point where she forgot a lyric, which she managed to turn into a comedy break before taking it again from the top. Good songs, good sound, I liked her set a lot. >The Ditty Bops aren't for everyone (in fact, IIRC Dan described their set >as "absolute torture" :}), but they are a lot of fun if you like old-timey >type stuff. Well to be fair, their performance was well executed and the place was packed with fans who loved every minute of it. Their music just isn't my cup of tea, and of course their set seemed longer than the ones I was really there to see, which added fuel to my comment. >After this we made our way over to The Living Room, where we had tickets >to see Charlotte Martin.... After all the recent good comments about Charlotte, I really thought she must have developed her own style and shaken the pure Tori emulation in the two years since Leif and I had seen her open for Damien Rice. At that time, our thoughts mirrored yours except she hadn't developed enough of a fan base for the after-show signing pomp yet. That's why we skipped her last night and stayed at the Mercury Lounge to see Blanche, a band that had coincidentally been recommended by one of Leif's punky co-workers. They ended up being one of those acts that are wildly entertaining to watch even though their music isn't the type of thing I would normally have in my CD player. Depression-era costumes and a bizarre retro alt-country style made them a logical choice to bill with the Ditty Bops, although their theatrics and energy level were off the scale by comparison. Really fun with great musicianship to boot. If you're planning to go see the Ditty Bops on one of their forthcoming dates with Blanche, I recommend you stick around to see this band. It must be hard for them to decide *which* CDs to listen to when they do have a little time to listen to othher people's music. And as was brought up there are a *lot* of worthwhile talented arrtists who deserve more attention than they get. Happy is far from being alone in this regard. Her label site, http://www.roughtraderecords.com/, also has a link to one video - in WMA and QuickTime, but I wasn't able to get the QuickTime to work. maybe just me or too early in the a.m.) And - the interesting streaming concert site is http://www.fabchannel.com/, with various live shows from Paradisio Club in Amsterdam. There are 372 various archived performances available, going back to 2000. I noticed Ani, Dayna Kurz, John Cage, Bettie Serveet in passing, with Maria McKee coming up next Wednesday. Another of those OS-impaired sites, tho - Windows Media only. On DSL, the sound is great, although the video occasionally a bit stop-motion. I'd better quit listening to/watching Emiliana's concert & get on with my Saturday. She's very charming & personable between songs. I went to the Creekdipper's web site (http://www.creekdipper.com/tour.htm) and I couldn't see where it said that Victoria was one of the Creekdippers this time around. I assume so, so though I hate putting up with the talented but insufferable Mark Olson, if I were in Europe it might be a prime chance to see Vic for a few minutes, if her husband will allow her to sing a couple of songs. Sorry, I dislike Mark Olson. It's nice that Vic loves him, but I saw him treat her like crap on stage, in front of an audience! I've always wondered how he treats her in private and the thought isn't pretty. Vic was being Vic, which is to say goofy and charming, and he was cutting her down and mocking her. Not in fun either. Chris and I were shocked. I almost yelled out "Leave her alone!" but didn't, and always wished I had. He was being downright mean to her. I met her after the show and she seemed depressed, a rarity for Victoria. She still smiled and hugged, but I've seen and met her countless times and she's always been bouncy and happy. This night was different. I wanted to go slap Olson. Fie on anyone who makes Victoria sad. I've seen the Creekdippers several times and increasingly it seemed as if he resents Victoria's fans. Once someone called out a Vic song and he rolled his eyes, and muttered "Oh yeah, sure, *another* Vic song." Now they're on tour and he wants to make damn sure people know that it's NOT a Victoria Williams show. Still, for big Vic fans, it might be worth checking out.
