Last night I happened to poke at throwingmusic.com again and was delighted to see the announcement: Attn. EUGENE, OR Fans! Posted by: tine on Friday, June 03, 2005 - 07:42 PM 50 Foot Wave will be playing an in-store tomorrow, Saturday June 4th, at CD World in Eugene, Oregon... simply because they're on their way to Portland and they're bored :-) The in-store is at 7pm, it's free and they're playing a full set. So of course I had to go. They didn't play a particularly long set, covering most (or maybe all) of _Golden Ocean_. But hey, the show was free, and on on top of that Billy (Kristin Hersh's husband/business manager/roadie/etc.) remarked while they were setting up, "We should have brought beer," disappeared for a few minutes, and came back with beer and chips that he offered to the audience of maybe 6-8 people. Obviously the show was very informal; they hung around and talked with people after they were done playing. I got to talk with Kristin, Billy, and Bernard for a bit, meet Kristin and Billy's kids, and give them a tip on where they could find a Thai restaurant in Eugene that made green papaya salad (which Kristin apparently loves). And I also got a copy of _Golden Ocean_ signed by the band. 50 Foot Wave will be in Portland on Sunday (tomorrow) and Seattle on Tuesday. Since the venue was a record store, I was unable to avoid an attack of EWS, and picked up a few other things that caught my eye: Cocteau Twins, _Head over Heels_ and _Heaven or Las Vegas_ (backfill for my CT collection) Lamb, _Fear of Fours_ Talking Heads, _The Name of This Band Is the Talking Heads_ 2 CD set They Might Be Giants, _Lincoln_ and _Flood_ (I had tapes of these long ago and always wanted them on CD) ------------------------------ Date: Sun, 5 Jun 2005 00:39:31 -0600 From: neal copperman Subject: Re: surprises are cool >Talking Heads, _The Name of This Band Is the Talking Heads_ 2 CD set is that the old double live CD? Yup, it's the same, with a whole lot added. I think there's been some remixing too, or possibly different takes. On the vinyl, there's a whoop from the audience at the beginning of "I Zimbra" that I'm sure was me, from the show at the Emerald City in Cherry Hill, NJ, that was one of them used for the album. But in my listening to the CD, it appears not to be there :-( The rest of it is dynamite, though :-) np: "Mysterious Skin" soundtrack - Robin Guthrie and Harold Budd ------------------------------ Date: Sun, 5 Jun 2005 00:56:34 -0600 From: neal copperman Subject: Re: surprises are cool I will have to add that to my "to buy" list then. I'm not sure I recognized it was a compilation (since I usually avoid buying those) but it did have one particularly striking and unfamiliar song on it, "Musette and Drums", from the Cocteau Twins album _Head Over Heels_, which I never came across until today. I have been saying that _Treasure_ is my favorite Cocteau Twins album, but now that I've heard _Head over Heels_, it's taken over the top spot. It's darker and more varied in tone, and wholly marvelous. ------------------------------ Date: Sun, 5 Jun 2005 01:31:20 -0700 From: Steve VanDevender Subject: Re: surprises are cool neal copperman writes: > >Talking Heads, _The Name of This Band Is the Talking Heads_ 2 CD set > > is that the old double live CD? It's a recent release; a friend of mine who is a big Talking Heads fan was excited about finding it last year. The CD set I got has 1979, 1982, and 2004 copyrights, and is on Rhino Records (R2 76489). ------------------------------ Date: Sun, 5 Jun 2005 11:40:39 -0400 (EDT) From: Bernie Mojzes Subject: Twinemen back in january i went to see was (not was) at the trocadero in philly. some band i never heard of before opened. so a drummer, bass player, sax player and female singer/guitarist come out on the stage. abt 3 notes into their set i was thinking that there was something hauntingly familiar to them, something that resonated deep inside me. turns out that twinemen is dana colley and billy conway from Morphine, and laurie sargent (who was in Face to Face). *big grin* anyway, if you're in the boston area next thursday, go see them. brni - ---------- Forwarded message ---------- Date: Sun, 05 Jun 2005 11:15:02 -0400 From: twine To: brni@kappamaki.com Subject: Twinemen Hello from Twinemen! "Rise Up" by the Parachute Club from 1983 This is from an article I found about the song...I cannot find the lyrics to post. Rise Up" is a pop song recorded by the Canadian group Parachute Club on their self-titled 1983 album. It was produced and engineered by Daniel Lanois. It remains Parachute Club's best-known song. An upbeat call for peace, celebration, and "freedom / to love who we please," the song was a national hit in Canada, and was quickly adopted as a gay anthem. "Rise Up" remains a widely-remembered 1980s standard, gay anthem, and positive inspirational song in Canada. ------------------------------ Date: Sun, 5 Jun 2005 16:46:31 -0400 From: Rodney Somerstein Subject: LA Area stores/performances this week? HI, I'm in LA this week staying downtown (right next to Little Tokyo). I'm wondering if anyone knows of any ecto-friendly CD stores and/or performances that I shouldn't miss this week while I'm in the area. I'm only here until Saturday morning, June 11, so Saturday night performances wouldn't work, unfortunately. Next weekend I will be hosting the Children's Hour on my local community radio station. I recently realized that it is Pride weekend, and the Pride parade literally starts from the parking lot of the radio station, a half hour after the show. I'm looking for songs I can play on a kids show that tie in thematically. They can be as broad as diversity and tolerance, to dealing with racism and homophobia. Or just tying in symbolically, like with rainbows and stuff. The only thing I outright refuse to play is YMCA!
