Sounds very much like standard East-Anglian generic under-30 speech to me here in the UK. - -- Chris Morriss ------------------------------ Date: Thu, 02 Jun 2005 20:23:32 +0100 From: Adam K Subject: Patty Griffin in London (at last), etc. Patty, playing only her second UK headlining gig, pretty much packed out the Lyric Hammersmith, an intimate venue consisting of a Victorian auditorium surrounded by a concrete block. Fans had come from all over, and she overcame nerves and a cold to give what was a stunning show, one of those rarities where I wished it could go on for another hour. Accompanied by a guitarist and switching, for a couple of numbers, to a grand piano, she kicked off the show with two numbers that were unfamiliar to me and which revealed, as with so many artists, what the recordings dont -- a fabulous, bluesy voice that slides through every human emotion, managing to encapsulate them all, even, in a single note. As Impossible Dream is just about to be released in this country, she played mostly from that, but admitted that, for her, these songs are already two years old, so she played a new one, Free. Oddly, she ignored Living With Ghosts entirely, so no Mad Mission, and omitted the glorious Rain and Mother of God or even Christina. Still, it was an utterly enchanting hour and a half, and we left with a warm glow. My partner -- not normally a fan of what she calls my wailing women was won over and had a similar grin on her face as we went out into the wastelands of Hammersmith. In the meantime, a tale of how I missed an ecto legend: Edd, a large, bearlike lad from work, informed us that his band had a gig at the Betsy Trotwood. I hoped to come along after a surprise engagement party (not mine) and asked him who else was on the bill. Apparently, opening for them was Kristeen Young. As it happened, the party turned into a sit-down meal and I made neither Ms Young nor The Spectres, Edds band. She was, by Edds account, most frightening and, despite an offer before the gig of #25 for the use of their drum kit, he was too intimidated by her to ask her for it afterwards. And, something else Im missing: Patti Smiths curating of the Meltdown Festival in which, on the same stage in the same evening: Patti Smith, Tori Amos, Kristen Hersh and Beth Orton, plus others, all singing songs for and about children. I figured it would be sold out and have also exceeded my concert quota, so it pains me to pass on this, but pass I must. Still thats quite a bill. adamk nr: Meditations in Green/Steven Wright np: Down to Earth/Nektar -- remastered and, apart from some light liner notes, totally, totally diviiiiiiiiiine. ------------------------------ Date: Thu, 02 Jun 2005 16:23:22 -0400 From: meredith Subject: Re: Patty Griffin in London (at last), etc. Hi, AdamK recounted: >In the meantime, a tale of how I missed an ecto legend: Edd, a large, >bearlike lad from work, informed us that his band had a gig at the Betsy >Trotwood. Oh my, that's hilarious. Kristeen onstage is indeed quite terrifying. Like what I've always imagined Danielle Dax to be like live, or like KaTe's performance of "Violin" from _Live At Hammersmith_, only for 40 solid minutes. But offstage, she is a very sweet, almost painfully shy little woman. She is by no means a pushover, but she isn't frightening at all. :) I'm sure you'll have another chance to see her. She appears to be back in the UK for a while. http://www.kristeenyoung.com =============================================== Meredith Tarr New Haven, CT USA mailto:meth@smoe.org http://www.smoe.org/meth =============================================== hear at the HOMe House Concert Series http://hom.smoe.org =============================================== ------------------------------ End of ecto-digest V11 #153 ***************************
