If you look at the AudioScrobbler charts for Happy here you find my two favorites: ecto, simply haunting, and When the rain came down, that voice and that atmosphere it was also the first song that I heard. This must be the first time charts match my tastes! :-) Yves. n.p. pull (thanks Neile, it is really really great. Imagine Garbage with Kym Brown's inventiveness) looking forward to an album n.r reading? you must be kidding, I have baby twins! ------------------------------ Date: Sat, 21 May 2005 09:39:11 -0400 From: meredith Subject: Re: Bob's movie, and who should I go see at Schubas in Chicago? Hi, Vickie responded: >Darker how? Darker than Happy's monsters and vampires and >suicide and death songs? :) In the same ballpark, but sonically as well as lyrically. Some of her stuff sounds like the soundtrack to the kind of really weird indie film where mannequins tend to come to life, and music boxes can attack. >Harsher might be more problimatical. Harsh generally equates >to noise in my book. It isn't that I'm an old fart (though I >am) because I didn't like harshy noisy when I was young >either. I wouldn't call it harshy-noisy ... and live I doubt it'd be too noisy if she's solo. I'm not a huge fan of harshy-noisy either, but I like Mary Timony. >I'm not familiar with Veda so the comparison is lost on me, >but it sounds interesting. I think what Jason was getting at is that she uses unorthodox time signatures and changes tempos mid-song. Veda Hille does that a lot (she has one song, for example, that's in eleven and changes to four/four for the chorus then goes into seven for a while then back to eleven again -- and a prize to anyone who can tell me which song that is ;). >Looking forward to it. I'll drop meth's name if I talk to her >after the show. :) And woj's too! :) Anne and Frank are lovely people, not to mention absolutely kickass performers. (It'll be a hometown show for her, btw, so get there early and consider buying tickets in advance if you can.) > > I have all of Charlotte MArtin's albums but would recommend > > Keren Ann over her... > >But if I could see both, is her music worth hearing in person? I haven't seen Charlotte Martin yet myself, but I have heard very good things about her live show. The thing for me is, she's too much of a Tori clone for me to be able to take her seriously. I enjoy listening to her new album, but after a while it gets to be too much and I need to go listen to some actual Tori to right the world again. You might enjoy playing the find-the-KaTe-references-in-her-songs game, though! (There are several, musical as well as lyrical... and too many to be coincidental, I think.) > > I really disliked Mary Gauthier when I saw her a few years ago > > but some people adore her... > >Ok, I'll check her out more. Mary Gauthier isn't for everyone, it's true. I don't own any of her CDs because I know I would never listen to them, but I enjoy seeing her live. She is a very down-home, collards-and-grits woman who has lived enough life for three people already, and can't lose her Southern drawl even when she's singing. She is one hell of a songwriter, and a great storyteller between songs as well. Also one of the sweetest people on earth. I would recommend checking her out, since I know how much you like Iris DeMent -- Mary Gauthier is coming from the same musical direction, albeit with a much more world-weary (dare I say gravelly?) voice. >Closer to Schubas? Where's "here"?? Jason currently lives waaay too close to me and woj. Fortunately, he's soon moving a half hour further south. ;) Funny story, actually -- when the Acoustic Cafe first opened in Bridgeport, the first show woj and I went to there was Merrie Amsterburg. The place wasn't too full of people, but we did meet one nice young man and struck up a conversation about music. This very quickly turned into the "have you heard of..." game, and wow, Jason was one of the only people we've ever run into who was able to win at Stump The Woj! He was already a Happy fan, so we told him about ecto and he has been plaguing our inboxes ever since. ;) And Jason -- you don't want to move closer to Schubas. Really. I adore Chicago, it's one of my favorite places on the planet, but Chicago doesn't have nearly as much going on ecto-music-wise as the NYC area does (though if the current round of venue closings doesn't stop in NYC soon, that may not continue to be the case!). =============================================== Meredith Tarr New Haven, CT USA mailto:meth@smoe.org http://www.smoe.org/meth =============================================== hear at the HOMe House Concert Series http://hom.smoe.org =============================================== ------------------------------ End of ecto-digest V11 #142 ***************************
