The big, fancy color flyer seems to be wrong. Kumbh Mela isn't opening on Friday. It's not in Landmark's Friday listings. Something must have happened to the print. Pooh. I don't know why I'm up at 5:00am looking through movie listings and Schubas' calendar, since I didn't just get home from seeing a midnight show of Star Wars, then going to an all-night diner after to talk about it, because that's what we did the last time, though I wish I had gone, but Chris doesn't get home until later this evening, just in time to go see Feist, who isn't even the headliner. (We have SW tickets for Friday) Upcoming are, Saturday: Anne Heaton, who I've never heard but whose name I see on ecto all the time, so I should go, right? Keren Ann - French singer that I saw earlier this year in NYC - sings in both french and english - simply stunning performer must see - does a lot of interesting tempo things like veda in her songs...her band also consisted of a piano, bass, and french horn when I saw her Anne Heaton is wonderful (personally I would be more excited to see Kim Taylor - partly because i love her album and partly because i've seen anne a half dozen times including last month at meth and woj's)... Darker how? Darker than Happy's monsters and vampires and suicide and death songs? :) Harsher might be more problimatical. Harsh generally equates to noise in my book. It isn't that I'm an old fart (though I am) because I didn't like harshy noisy when I was young either. > Keren Ann - French singer that I saw earlier this year in NYC > - sings in both french and english - simply stunning performer > must see - does a lot of interesting tempo things like veda > in her songs...her band also consisted of a piano, bass, and > french horn when I saw her I'm not familiar with Veda so the comparison is lost on me, but it sounds interesting. I just missed Keren Ann, she played the Hothouse around the time we went to see Jorane. I'm glad she's coming back so soon. Martha's new album is excellent--I'm surprised it hasn't got more talk here on ecto yet. Her voice reminds me a bit of Wendy MaHarry (anyone remember her)? Her songs are varied and hard to pin down--she puts a lot of passion into her singing, and has a lot of character in her voice. I'd check her out if she came my way. Her songwriting/voice is also a bit reminescent of her mother's (Kate McGarrigle)--but a bit more grounded. Her voice isn't as polished as Sloan's by any means, but it's a strong voice with a lot of character. Vicki, To answer your question, I first heard Happy Rhodes on the radio on WXPN in Philadelphia (still my favorite radio station, BTW) while I was living in South New Jersey, near Cherry Hill. I think the first Happy song I heard was Runners. I had also at that time just been introduced to Kate Bush's music and was intrigued by this other singer who was similar to Kate in her expermental style. I think that was about 1993. I bought Equipoise and listened to the entire CD in my backyard on my lounge chair with headphones on and the rest, as they say, is history. :) I have all her CDs now and the mousepad too! :) - -Patrick - -----Original Message----- From: owner-ecto@smoe.org [mailto:owner-ecto@smoe.org] On Behalf Of Xenu's Sister Sent: Thursday, May 19, 2005 10:28 AM To: Ecto Subject: Re: Favorite Happy Song? - --- "Patrick M. Fortunately, Google Knows All (especially if you know how to search properly) -- I was going to go nuts trying to remember the name of the computer game which inspired "100 Years." It was a 1997 game from GTE called _Timelapse: Ancient Civilizations_. In the game, you travel through various ancient civilizations (duh) until you get to the last one, Atlantis. From an interview with one of the game's designers: AG: Tell us something about the plot. We know the archeologist that proceeds the main character has managed to get into the time gates and has travelled from one world to the other searching for the secret to the whole plot. What happens when the archeologist reaches Atlantis? SP: When the archaeologist reaches Atlantis he discovers that the sunken section of the city where he has landed, is the outpost ship itself. A cataclysm, the legendary sinking of Atlantis, took place, interrupting the final mission, and forcing the few living occupants to go into hybernation waiting for the turbulance in the Earth's atmosphere to subside. A maintenance robot had been programmed to launch the ship when conditions were appropriate, but during a repair operation, the robot was damaged by an electrical discharge, and its original programming was altered. The ship should have been launched centuries ago, but there it remains, still maintained by the guardian. That's it. Happy wrote an incredibly brilliant song from the point of view of this minor "character" in a video game. Damn, she's *good*. When Happy did the first few shows after releasing MWABT, back when she was planning a fancy tour with Samson's backing (hah!), she actually gave away a few copies of the game -- they were hidden under random audience members' seats and when it came time for "100 Years" she told the audience to check under their seats. Joe Zitt and I had driven to Philly for one of these shows (10/98, I think) and I was one of two lucky winners at that show. jeff n.p. _The Forgotten Arm_, Aimee Mann ------------------------------ End of ecto-digest V11 #140 ***************************
