Yeah, Vienna was in my car. Wow. It's weird to just write that. heee. She had a wonderful show tonight, bringing along Marika Hughes on cello and a new violinst named Dana. Not to knock on Alan, who is good in his own right, but Dana was fabulous...very free and skilled with her violin, and she sat on Marika's lap to do some background vocals on Enough to Go By. They'll join Vienna again next week for her final residency set at the Hotel Cafe. You Must Come! Another "squeee" moment for me this past Sunday, when I played cello with Angela Correa. Angie Hart was the first act to go on, and Ms. Correa joined her for a few BG vox parts. Then, during our set, Angie came out and sang Backgrounds on one of our songs, which meant that I Got To SHARE THE STAGE WITH ANGIE HART!! Wooooo. And the rest of the time, I played well and in tune (according to my friends in the audience...I couldn't tell because I had no monitor wedge with which to hear myself), so, for my first public performance in 3 years, I was quite happy with how it went. Music is so awesome! There's something about that song that really embodies for me what makes Happy's music so great - very few artists can blend sadness and silliness, simplicity and complexity, naivety and wisdom so thoroughly and as well as Happy can. brni On Wed, 18 May 2005, Robert Lovejoy wrote: > Trying to pick a favorite Happy song is like going into a beautiful > garden and being asked to point out your favorite flower. > I just can't do it! > > Bob Lovejoy > - -- brni i don't want the world, i just want your half. www.livejournal.com/~brni ------------------------------ Date: Wed, 18 May 2005 06:11:38 -0700 (PDT) From: "Xenu's Sister" Subject: Bob and Happy and the movies! (Kumbh Mela opens Friday in Chicago) Imagine my surprise when Happy tells me Bob did the soundtrack of a movie! It's called "Short Cut to Nirvana: Kumbh Mela" and it opens this Friday in Chicago. Happy plays on some of it, and she believes her name is in the credits! She and Bob went to New York recently to attend the premiere. I asked her if her voice was in it and she said maybe a bit, but not really so you could recognize it as being Happy Rhodes. Well, that's a damn shame, but this is a start. Here's a synopsis of the film from the flyer given out at the theater where it will be playing: Held every 12 years where the holy Ganges and Yamuna rivers meet, the ancient Kumbh Mela festival is the largest in history--over 70 million pilgrims and many of India's most revered spiritual leaders, including the Dalai Lama. More than a simple account of the 2001 event, this film is a sensory experience f an ancient, grand occasion, a swirl of color and motion, song and cacophony, the sacred and the surreal--spiritual India as anyone would hope to find it, offering a message of harmony, unity and peace for all humanity. Directed by Maurizio Benazzo and Nick Day (USA 2004) www.melafilms.com ============ Here's the IMDB page: http://us.imdb.com/title/tt0420723/ Yep, Bob Muller, original music. Good for him! Happy's not on IMDB, but I'll be scanning for her name in the credits. We always sit through the credits anyway, so it's not a big deal to us. It opens at the Landmark Century on Clark. I don't know yet where else it will open, if anywhere. - -+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+ Music, all I hear is music, guaranteed to please... - -+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+ - -+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+ ------------------------------ Date: Wed, 18 May 2005 08:16:40 -0500 From: Doug Subject: Re: Fav Happy songs If you like Roy, try reading the book "Protector" by Larry Niven (or listen to the audiobook). I think it is a Triton. At least that is what I concluded after seeing the photos of EctoFest West. My favorite Happy song (among many) is "Down, Down." Just gets a particular neurochemical flowing in my brain. Can't account for it. The song paints a picture for me. My favorite lyric is: "We'll give you a cable show" from "Save Our Souls." Which is a plea to an alien to contact us. I heard "Calling Occupants Of Interplanetary Craft" the other day on an NPR story on SETI or some such and I was thinking-- "Why not 'Save Our Souls?'" My favorite Happy songs are the quiet ones that close out an album. She is very good at writing those. "Glory," "Serenading Genius," "In Hiding." For Judee Sill fans: "Dreams Come True." I know it is a new album and Amazon has reviews but that is all I know. I believe cuts on the CD were to be her third album. Bye, Lyle nr: _Sirens of Titan_, K.
